He went to Chelsea twice when they assembled a young squad able to fight for title and gave him ton of money to bring even more players. He was one of the reasons (biggest one) that Chelsea ended with Hazard-Oscar-Willian instead of Hazard-KdB-Salah - which would be arguably one of the best offensives in history of football.
He went to Inter, when they won 3 titles in a row and were dominating Serie A and his shopping and insistance of experience was big part of their dominance ending.
He went to Real, when they had Galacticos 2.0 assembled already and who won 2 titles 2 years before he came (i.e. 06-08, he came there at 2010).
He went to MU after they spent over 350mil over previous 2 seasons (and spent another 400mil under him the next 2 seasons). Without moving them to get single PL title.
He went to Spurs, who were consistently in TOP4 and they wanted to move for title. Instead they were out of TOP4 for 2 years under him.
He went to Roma, who were consistently around 6th place to keep them around 6th place.
He literally never went to club, who was failing. You could argue that all CFC, Real and Inter were destined to win, no matter Mourinho. And with teams that were not there, he did not help them to make it.

I will say, in years and years time, when we look back on his time as a manager and compare him to others around him, we will all say that he was kicked about quite a lot by the game. You think of the big names he went toe to toe with, Fergeson, Wenger, Pep, all managers whose reigns were notable for either a) someone taking a chance on a newcomer because they were talented, b) them going through a bad spell and being given a lot of time and trust and patience, or c) both, and Mourinho never really got that. He had to win the Champions League with Porto for anyone to even notice him.
He learned his trade at Barca, who seemingly never believed in him. He is certainly Chelsea's all time greatest manager, and he came back to the club when they needed him, and they dumped him twice without much thought. He got treated as a hostile force at Real Madrid, and the fans baulked at his audacity for thinking he should be allowed to pick his team, and decide how they play. He won things there too, against Pep Guardiola's Barcelona mind you, and he got chucked out anyway and they were glad to see the back of him. At Man U he was treated as a joke, no more so than when he said that getting to 2nd with them was one of his greatest ever performances as a manager, which, in hindsight, it actually might have been, and they asked him not to slam the door on the way out. We talk about him being combative or his 'us against the world' mentality, but I wonder how different things could have been if 1 of those teams had put their foot down and decided to stick with him.

I was thinking about thst too. Klopp in 7 years only won a premier league, a cl and some(not a lot) cups, yet hes regarded as one of the best managers of the last 10 years(rightly so). Mou won 2 european cups with porto, went toe to toe w sir alex and even went above and beyond that for 2 seasons, won the treble with inter, won la ligas against the best football side of all time and then came back to england and won again. He is very underrated.

The fact that the transfer situation made such a big deal within the Roma hierarchy makes the Anthony Taylor controversy even more important. Referees NEED to be held accountable, just as any other person in the World who has a job is. People don't look at the evidence and only go with their bias. The replay even after all these years is still available for people to see. It was a clear robbery. Roma had the match won. Taylor made in incredibly horrible decision and cost Roma the match. For all who’s saying he’s done at club level & should move on to cups - wait till he proves you wrong like Don Carlo.
Ancelotti was managing Everton 2 yrs ago after failed stints at Bayern & Napoli. Everyone called him “washed”. Now he’s won his 4th CL & gonna win the league this year, and he’s labelled “GOAT”. Doesn’t mean he was not bad at his previous jobs. He was.
But all it takes is a good club with proper structure to win something.
Jose has been on losing projects for the last 7 years starting with United. But he’s still managed to win at every club.
One good project is all it takes. Until then, kids keep drinking the koolaid, those who know the game, be cool!

There are a few things to say that would give a more realistic spin to the whole story:
The "decreto crescita" was not a tax break for soccer teams, it was used as that, but it was a general tax relief measure during and right after the pandemic
AS Roma is not a good team this year, their best players are injured and they're full of has beens and gambles hired for cheap in hope of Jose doing miracles
The sacking of Mourinho might have been an act of courage, but it has been followed by a really low hiring: De Rossi is young and umproven as a coach, but he's an idol at Roma, therefore he signed the cheapest contract in Serie A and no matter how good or bad he does he will always (and rightfully) have the love of all the fans

He’s also so passionate about his teams and the sport and I always love that. He will be wasted in Saudi, he needs and deserves his public. Benitez is of that same generation, not as successful but at his peak was one of the best managers around. As a Roma fan, the most significant moment of Mourinho's tenure at Roma and perhaps in the club's modern history was Anthony Taylor's failure to award a clear-cut penalty for Roma in the Europa League final against Sevilla. Everything changed after that. The stakes were just too high -- second European trophy and qualification in UCL. As much as I was tired of the way Mourinho used referees as scapegoats during his time at Roma, it was almost a self-fulfilling prophecy: Taylor and his VAR team made a truly indefensible and inexplicable decision that night.

  • @rezarfar

The issue with Jose ultimately comes down to his insistence to play mind games and antagonise his opponents. He very much uses "dark arts" football tactics.
This is why he got 16 touchline bans in Roma, forcing him to watch from the stands, why he's had that issue in almost every club he's ever been in. Why he has been fired more than 5 times now.
He sets up his team in a "us against the world" mentality and while it works, its great but when it stops working, it becomes absolutely horrible.
I feel bad for him but then again, you can't deny that many of his issues are his own fault.

    • @necromax13
      @necromax13 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't think his galvanizing character or his antics are the problem, they're the symptom.
It all stems from his unwavering insistence of training with conditioning. He will manage his group on a cyclical intensity level, on a crescendo when matches are coming (specially important ones) and nitpick every single tactical possibility on the pitch for said match. And this in turn becomes overbearing for his players (and when we're talking about stars, elite footballers, or "streets wont forget" types, it doesn't usually come out well).
And one of his tools for handling pressure is that he becomes the man carrying the banner, the face of the controversy.
      -------
Another point worth being mentioning is how antiquated he feels at times. Not just tactically but also in handling players or interactions with the administration of the clubs he's in.
He'd rather be fired than to accept anything being asked of him.

Jose IS a great manager. He just isn't the guy like Fergie to stick with a club long-term. He runs on a three-year cycle and then things tend to come to an end. But he has changed the culture and had enormous success at Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Madrid and Roma. I also think he was very good for United with how inept the board was and deluded that the squad was up to standard. And yes he didn't win Madrid a CL title, but that was with peak Barcelona at the top of their powers and he already won 2 with Inter and Porto, both treble seasons. He usually clashes with the board or becomes unhappy because he has strong views and expects to be fully backed. But for a guy who doesn't last long at clubs, he just wins trophies. Over, and over, and over again.

Some really bad journalism here: "The Friedkins indulged Mourinho with €113m in his first summer." Nope.
And then you set it up as a precursor to Roma's financial struggles - which also began FAR BEFORE Mourinho even came.
    The truth:
Kumbulla, Ibanez and Reynolds were brought in far earlier as loans with OBLIGATION to buy - that's €45m that has nothing to do with Mourinho.
Vina was brought in only because Spinnazola tore his achilles
Shomurodov was Pinto's transfer for which he took full responsibility (as he did with Vina)
The only ones left - Rui Patricio and Abraham were the only Mourinho's transfers. Patricio was a good buy. Tammy would've been even better as he would've been sold last summer for around 40m - the same amount he was bought for, but he tore his ACL in the last game of the season and ended up being out for a year.
So in 3 years the Friedkins "INDULGED" Mourinho with Tammy Abraham and a €10m goalkeeper.

    • @TheTrooper9169666
      @TheTrooper9169666 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Also, Roma's wage bill is nothing else than an indication of a "stale" club in regards to transfers.
They just can't move their deadwood. Spinnazola, Karsdsorp, Celik, Tammy (due to injury), Kumbulla and many other players are not interested in leaving Roma and Roma just can't find a club for them. And because of this Roma can't bring in replacements for them - meaning all they have to do is reject the move away from Roma and it will result in them actually playing for Roma - which we see happening.
It's a bit of a paradox, really. But of course, people mention Roma's wage bill as if it is an indication of a strong squad. It's quite the opposite.

The way you can tell that no one actually thinks the confrence league is a valuable trophy for a club like Roma is that people keep calling it "a european trophy" instead of confrence league.
When a team wins the europa league you refer to it as the europa league, if people win the champions league you refer to it as the champions league. If people have won both then you say european trophies.
I can't wait for a few years when mid table teams keep winning it so people will finally stop talking about the confrence league like it's some massive trophy for a club like Roma

When u get players on free (cause of the coach calibre) u pay higher wages
Then u spend €10mil in 2 SUMMER transfer & want success
You have to loan/rely on injury prone players
Fan base didn't turn on him...De Rossi was to cool the fans (like Ryan Mason in Spurs)

As a Roma fan I do think it would have been better to keep Mourinho until the end of the season, now this season isn't the best but he did keep us in contention to get into the top 4 even while we were in 9th place especially now we are in 5th after our win against Salernitana. The north has always been the football juggernauts and even at our best it would be difficult to keep up with them. It doesn't excuse the poor performances especially against teams that we are equal to or normally better than but expecting Jose to bring us to a Serie A title at this point (while it would be amazing) is a very high expectation. I love De Rossi, but his managerial resume compared to Jose is very worrying since this is his second job at a club that is much bigger and has a lot more pressure than SPAL which he did get relegated and I am very scared this could be the same as when MAN UTD brought in Ole who shocked the system and delivered amazing results at first just to fall flat once the dust settles down.

In Italy tranfer balance accounts for less points per game variability than payrolls, moreover, there is colinearity between the two, meaning that you don't even account for transfer balance or that you regularize it to a lesser weight if you want greater accuracy in explainig/predictiong PpG. Mourinho is a hack and that is that!

The amount of money that got spent on that team is ridiculous for how little Mouriniho achieved. If I was a Roma fan I'd personally be furious on how little he really achieved. People can say what they want about Jose but its simply unacceptable that they never truly challenged for Champions League football under him.
