I don’t think they are. It’s not like Nike or Adidas is slapping their label on regular, everyday items and charging astronomical prices like Supreme. The authentic shirt can be thought of as a tool for athletes if they’re meant to help with their performance. There’s a lot of work and technology going into these shirts which justify the price. Great breakdown of the football/soccer shirts business, I feel like that’s an industry in and of itself.
I live in Bangladesh. I have an original real madrid kit. I bought it for just a little more than one euro from a friend who works at the garments that made those. It's terrifying to know the end price
I think they should be cheap, as we are not just wearing club shirts, but also promoting the brands printed on. Even if a club changes sponsors, we still carry the old ones
@@saniakshay12 I Personally use 3 both for home internet and as phone carrier and I don't mind promoting a brand that I actually like but I'm gonna say it's absolutely HIDEOUS on the Chelsea kits! So much so that I actually did not buy any modern Chelsea kit. I prefer the Yokohama and Samsung ones. There is a good way of supporting your club by buying a jersey without the ads, here's how. 1. Some Clubs offer "Euro" Designs of their jerseys, where there are no sponsors. 2. Buy Training or prematch jerseys. Most of them are ad free and even cost less
Fantastic video as usual! As a shirt collector, this is a great breakdown as I’ve been pondering why shirt prices continue to go up as replica quality continues to go down.

@@lemonking3644 Most of the times they are new kits each game. Especially for big clubs like Real Madrid. After matches players will give them to a fan or trade with another player so the the shirt they wore isn’t in their possession anymore.

@@colombiantom it did happen to me this season tbh, little gutted, but kinda expected due to international supply chain issues. Just chalked it up to "not ment to be"
That's what I did, managed to get a home shirt in my size down from £70 to £40 because of it being an end of season sale, I don't mind paying that because that to me is what the shirt is actually worth and is usually the maximum I'm willing to pay.
He's also using Bank of England stats to calculate Euro inflation for some reason? Eurozone inflation has been 2% which makes 29 euros in 1992 around 54 euros today.
Yes but football shirts are not mostly about production costs, they are about recovering costs from the sponsorship to the club that gives them the right print those shirts in the first place. Those numbers are impacted by general inflation in addition to growth of demand. Remember most of the revenue of the sale of a shirt goes to the shirt company and not the club....that's cos the right to print those shirts have been paid for in advance. In essence you are paying the shirt company who already pre-paid your club (and not buying shirts will affect any future sponsorship value the club can get).
In our country, the inflation of money is way different so it’s cost only about 20 dollars for an authentic licensed shirt. Something a fast food worker can get for a month in other countries is what taxi drivers get in 5 months here
I think I'd have less of a problem with football shirts if they hadn't changed to releasing a new home shirt every single season. Back in the '90s in the UK, the system for most clubs was a home shirt (and sometimes the away) would be used for 2 seasons which means the kit would at least have a little more value.
True it started at the beginning of the 00's. I believe until 04 Bayern Munich, for example, changed their home kit only every two years. The same goes for Dortmund. From 04 on, we had a new jersey every season. My favorite jerseys until today are the _"Total 90"_ ones by Nike. The national teams playing in theses kits had a circled in number on the front of the jersey, instead of the sponsor. They can be seen in the famous Nike ad, were Portugal played Brazil, with an endless number of top-stars: *th-cam.com/video/F2q7703-IFg/w-d-xo.html* I had a Tomáš Rosický one. But I'm sure it wasn't a replica. It had all the features of the original one the players wore on the pitch. I had _"Total 90"_ shoes and a yellow/purple ball too. The ball was indeed a replica! I just was in love with that style. Now I haven't bought a jersey for over ten years and I also don't play myself anymore.

Your inflation reasoning for the football shirt pricing is wrong. During those 30 years, production also moved to cheap locations; production costs are the same/lower than 30 years ago, because they're made in Vietnam/China/Sri Lanka etc.
Don't know how much I buy all this. The fact you can buy shirts from DH Gate which are extremely high quality (virtually indistinguishable from authentics) at a fraction of the price shows it can be done. If working with retailers means a commitment to double the price so you don't undercut one another then don't do it- sell exclusively in Adidas Stores, club shops and online, that way you could immediately cut €40 from the cost of each shirt, sell a lot more and close demand for the illegal DH Gate trade.
I sent some jerseys from India to UK in February. The cost per piece, including shipping to UK; was 6 euros. It would come down to 4 euros if I shipped 10 at once. That's the scale of mark up, we're talking about!
And that's why a lot of fans (mainly southern Italian ones from Napoli and Palermo) just wait it out or buy the shirts after the new kit is released: usually the replica kits are worth way less when the new kit is released, so if you just wait until the next season (usually January or February) the older kit is a bargain to purchase because the retailers will have a rush to sell them to make more space for the "more demanded" new kits, while recouping some costs. :)
What i usually do is find what the new kits will look like at the beginning of the season. If i'm interested in one i usually wait for the sales at the end of the season (i also have a discount as a member), but you have to be fast because the kit is often sold out in a couple of days or sometimes hours. And sometimes i'm not interested by the new kits at all. Which is even cheaper!
in our country Afghanistan, the replica shirts are 4$ even less sometimes. and one of my friends gifted me an authentic version of the Barcelona shirt. there is not much difference between the two.
Wrong , irritation could easily be a problem , also most jersey used by big clubs used a special material that could quickly evaporates sweat and keep body temperature stable
Very similar to NBA jerseys. There are 3 versions that I know of. There are the replicas for fans to wear and the authentic ones for players and fans but the NBA also sells a "swingman" version of jerseys. They are like a intermediate version of the replica and authentic versions.
Hmmm…in my experience they’ve always been pretty expensive. At least in the US. It was hard to get jerseys because there was no real market and demand was limited to those small soccer loving populations, so everything was imported. I’m talking since the mid 90’s. Even after the US World Cup. And soccer specialty stores were limited. Being of Mexican descent I grew up watching the Mexican league and again, those jerseys were imported and were always between $70 and $90 USD. MLS eventually emerged and they were also in the same range. I recall my parents not being able to afford them and if I ever did jet a jersey I would feel guilty. I got a Mexico ABA Sport jersey from 1996, right before the legendary 98 jersey. I regret not getting that 98 one now. But like I mentioned, the imports were expensive and so were the MLS ones. I also didn’t get the first LA Galaxy jersey because of the price. Eventually the market for soccer in the US grew and you would eventually have the chance of getting a previous season’s kit for $45 USD. Either way the story of soccer jerseys around the world is interesting. Awesome video.
Copies of the jersey sell for 3 euros(starting) in India. Its a huge market here. Embroidered, Patches, Sublimes etc. Obviously these are not authentic. But how does it matter, I get what I want - The look is just perfect
I have the contact of some factories in China and I frequently buy from them for 15$ (same quality, I always take the shirts I buy to the retail store to compare), amazing deal
I am a Barcelona fan myself, and the jersies are damn expensive! It's ridicilous, we went to a mid tier cheap football jersey store, the quality are quite good we bought one for each👍
There are some changes going on in the breakdown of the price of a football shirt. Large companies, especially Nike and Adidas are trying to circumvent the brick-and-mortar store and smaller web stores by selling directly to the consumer. If you look at the breakdown you can see why: it makes up for a large part of the price, so there's a lot to gain for these companies.
A great overview. One aspect that should be mentioned in this conversation is the abysmal wage earned by those who actually make them in the overseas factories. A fair cut of the profits for the workers is something we should be pushing for.
if milan wins serie a this year...i will buy their shirts...it cost about 60 dollars in my country....a little appreciate from me to the club even though its very expensive for a shirts for me
You can buy an replica shirt in my country for roughly 3/4dollar(fan version ) player version costs 2-4 dollar more and they authentic one is around 9-10$ PS-its cheap bcz they are made here
Pretty sure that they aren't THAT cheap. Those shops are ripping you off by claiming they are "original" jerseys. iPhones are now manufactured in india, doesn't mean we can buy them cheap. 😂🤣

You failed to mention that wages have stagnated and in many cases not grown at all in most countries. This indeed means that football shirts are dollar for dollar more expensive than they were 30 years ago.
The shirts business in football is summed up pretty well by Arsenal. They have been releasing retro kits ever since their current kit deal with Adidas started. The retro kits have been so popular that people have been calling Arsenal a 'sports retro wear company who also play football'. The shirt business has eclipsed just football and have broken into pop culture as well, such has been the impact. Great video! Love your content. Congratulations for 500k in advance, seeing your growth as a channel since day 1 has been incredible. Keep up the good work!
so we can assume that every other shirt (non-football) that are produced in same place with same materials and the same cost to produce will be sold for 90€ in the final destinations....I don't think so. defenitly a huge ripoff, only because they know people buy it no matter what.
In Indonesia made in Thailand shirt was the best choice in quality and comfort to buy not to expensive and accessible because it's bit complicated to spend 90€ just like a month salary just for shirt
Love the Stade de la Licorne reference (with the adidas and ebay holograms). I have been there 2 weeks ago in the away stand and it is a tiny, wonderful stadium with a lot of light 😍
Well researched and produced episode, guys!🙌🙌🙌🙌 Honestly, the only team shirt I would buy and wear is the current Nigeria 2018 world cup shirt! I really loved the unique design, and it seems fans love it too because it's sold out (in my size at least) EVERYWHERE! well, let me add that companies invest in designing and pay artists to come up with cool-looking shirts. so let's add that to the calculations maybe.
In vietnam, the friend of my friend's dad owns a boots factory for nike. Some of the stuffs that doesn't pass the QC are sold to my friend's dad, they'll fix it and sell it for 200 bucks
Bro what are you talking about? Burnley sells theirs for like $55 which would mean their losing money here. Shipping and taxes are often added on AFTER checking out, so you’re always paying more than what the retail price is
You also have to count the cost of technology. Theses companies also spend a lot on R&D. For example, researching on materials such as recycled polyester, aerodynamic cut, where to place breathable holes, etc. It takes many years to craft and perfect it. They have to adjust it's cost somewhere.
Recently I shipped a Manchester United kit from England to India, I paid around 45% in customs duty alone which is outrageous considering I paid around 150 Canadian dollars which brought over 200$ in total for the so-called authentic jersey. SMH.
I live in South Africa and authentic shirts can easily cost up to R1000 , then there are fake rip-offs that sell for ¼ of that which look the same but with questionable quality
Walked into a sports direct today to look at the new Liverpool shirt. £75 walked straight out. It should be capped at £50. £75 for a football shirt is absolutely ridiculous for something you will wear for a season. A Liverpool shirt in 2010 was £40. Edit: I ended up just buying this years shirt as it’s a really nice shirt but £75 lmao
i have bought them just 2 times and combining them two it comes to around 18USD tops when i was in my country. It cost around 119AUD now but i can "DHL" or ship from my country to Australia and i can buy some alcohol and watch game with the jearsey i bought. And if i find someone travelling then i have a spare of more that 110AUD for "Football Shirt" Now thats a deal
Would be cheaper to directly go to gift shop in the stadium of the team you support and buy a jersey there? If custom and import fee does make it expensive.
I love sponsors on the uniforms. Just gives the shirt a lot of character. Never understood the hate for it in US sports other than "wahhhhh wahhh we don't like something different".
I still have the Liverpool kit from 2011, bought by my friends for my 21st birthday. I can't wear it now, but I still keep it though, for the memories lol
Sheffield Foot-Ball Club regulations are from 1859 - very clear at the bottom centre of the Regulations at 00:55. Melbourne Football Club (Australian Football) predates Sheffield in 1858 and no hyphen in the game; the English hate this fact, but it is still a fact.

Hey, friend. Do u know why Napoli shirts are so tiny??? I really want one but it seems like i have to buy a 3XL to fit like a regular XL
Great video, guys! I had a feeling the price of today's football shirts would be due to inflation.
In large part, it's true! 📈
2 year difference
2022: 80 euros jersey
2024: 100-110 euros jersey
in our country Afghanistan, the replica shirts are 4$ even less sometimes. and one of my friends gifted me an authentic version of the Barcelona shirt. there is not much difference between the two.
Its dinner time in India , what a perfect time to upload 👌 😀 love your content ❤
A little evening entertainment 😉
They’re still way overpriced. You can put pro players shirtless in games and you won’t feel they lack “technology and aerodynamics”
Wrong , irritation could easily be a problem , also most jersey used by big clubs used a special material that could quickly evaporates sweat and keep body temperature stable
No
@@alahsiaboi8909 the replica AND counterfeit does that as well!
Very similar to NBA jerseys. There are 3 versions that I know of. There are the replicas for fans to wear and the authentic ones for players and fans but the NBA also sells a "swingman" version of jerseys. They are like a intermediate version of the replica and authentic versions.
What a great channel. Best channel to learn business in Football ♥️
This man narrating skills is phenomenal!
Could watch this man videos for hours!
Please do! 😄
Half a Million Subs, congratulations! Your attention and simplicity is Genius.
I think the reason is unrealistic money that clubs spends for singing with players-mainly wages and transfer sums.
Except you didn't account for the fact that wages are miles behind inflation, so we are paying more, we have less.

The quality of the shirts was also way better 30 years ago and even 20 years ago.
You would think the rise of online stores would have taken a lot of the retail portion of the cost out and put it in the bin.
Copies of the jersey sell for 3 euros(starting) in India. Its a huge market here. Embroidered, Patches, Sublimes etc. Obviously these are not authentic. But how does it matter, I get what I want - The look is just perfect
Just convert the price to Indian Rupees and you'll cry for sure🙆🏻♂️

I am a Barcelona fan myself, and the jersies are damn expensive! It's ridicilous, we went to a mid tier cheap football jersey store, the quality are quite good we bought one for each👍
Wow, how informative! It also surprisingly answered my question about the difference between an authentic jersey and a regular jersey!
Just as I was wondering this myself you release a video. Great timing.
That's what we try to do! 😉
Last time o bought an Arsenal shirt was about 15 years ago. It cost £30. There's no way in hell I would ever pay £110 for one.
Let me guess... This video was sponsored by Adidas.🤔
In Australia I usually get my rugby league jerseys at the end of the season but then they still like 80-100 bucks on sale
the breakdown of price will be used when milk is sold for £20
There are some changes going on in the breakdown of the price of a football shirt.
Thanks for your videos! As a sportsfan and marketing manager is this the perfect channel! :)

This topic is so often mislead that it leads to confusion.
BTW athletic Interest how much would a 2014 Germany's black and red jersey would cost today any idea.

@@enthusiast2493 Ya I'm from 🇮🇳. The price is shocking.
@@shubhojitghosh69 retro kits are always over priced than the regular ones
i have one but i cant say anything cause i bought it in 2014
I think the inflation numbers are extremely misleading, because clothing in general has stagnated in price for decades.
Thank you!
so we can assume that every other shirt (non-football) that are produced in same place with same materials and the same cost to produce will be sold for 90€ in the final destinations....I don't think so. defenitly a huge ripoff, only because they know people buy it no matter what.
Congrats on the 500k subs! That's a lot more than your 10k subs before :).
Glad we're moving in the right direction 😄
In Indonesia made in Thailand shirt was the best choice in quality and comfort to buy not to expensive and accessible because it's bit complicated to spend 90€ just like a month salary just for shirt

Honestly, the only team shirt I would buy and wear is the current Nigeria 2018 world cup shirt!
I really loved the unique design, and it seems fans love it too because it's sold out (in my size at least) EVERYWHERE!
well, let me add that companies invest in designing and pay artists to come up with cool-looking shirts.
so let's add that to the calculations maybe.

very interesting, thank you! it leaves me wondering.. why is it not less expensive in an adidas store than in a JD store?
because what jd pay in overheads (rent, staff wages etc) adidas would also have to pay
@@sxh1r thanks, in that aspect, the cost must be similar
@@sxh1r also probably a deal was signed, so that fans don't buy from one store only
Yet another great video! Thanks for the analysis
Always welcome!
I’ll take replicas at $40-$60 over paying for an “authentic” jersey at $140+
That Thumbnail is 🔥 🔥🔥
Very informative
How is such content free 😀 thanks Athletic interest
You're welcome! 🙂
Recently I shipped a Manchester United kit from England to India, I paid around 45% in customs duty alone which is outrageous considering I paid around 150 Canadian dollars which brought over 200$ in total for the so-called authentic jersey. SMH.
I live in japan. My country’s league “J League” kits is expensive.
Because Dembele salary is way more than he deserves.

I love sponsors on the uniforms. Just gives the shirt a lot of character. Never understood the hate for it in US sports other than "wahhhhh wahhh we don't like something different".
Indeed. I feel like when reminiscing about football a part of us thinks of the shirt sponser at the time
I still have the Liverpool kit from 2011, bought by my friends for my 21st birthday. I can't wear it now, but I still keep it though, for the memories lol
It's vintage now 😉
€90 for a t-shirt is way to much

Sheffield Foot-Ball Club regulations are from 1859 - very clear at the bottom centre of the Regulations at 00:55. Melbourne Football Club (Australian Football) predates Sheffield in 1858 and no hyphen in the game; the English hate this fact, but it is still a fact.
