Ludicrous! 2023 Tesla Model Y electric car review: Performance | Watch it, Kia EV6 GT!

  • The 2023 Tesla Model Y is off to a hot start in Australia - like, seriously hot. Local buyers had to wait a long time for the mid-size SUV to arrive, but it's wasted no time in selling like hotcakes. After all, electric vehicle specialist Tesla is the undisputed leader in the EV market, and there's no body-style that's more in demand at the moment than a high-riding wagon.
    But that doesn't the full Model Y assault on the Australian market has been released yet, because the flagship Performance has only just rocketed into 'showrooms', with the Kia EV6 GT and upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 N firmly in its sights. Yep, this is the one enthusiasts have been waiting for - or have they?
    In this expert review, CarsGuide Journalist Tom White takes the new Model Y Performance for a spin to see if it has what it takes to further shake-up the establishment. Because at the end of the day, cutting-edge technology and ludicrous performance will be enough to make some people think twice about buying a traditional petrol-powered sports car.

    Failed to mention that most controls can be changed by voice command by pressing the button on the steering wheel. All controls like temp, songs, nav, heated seats, wipers, open the truck, glovebox and practically everthing is one touch. If you're plowing through menus while driving you're doing it wrong but then again there's autopilot.

      Pretty much lol. What the hell is an enthusiast he keeps referring to. It’s like they’re scared of upsetting the ice fans. I have a manual porsche GT car for the weekend but daily the model y p. For the performance and price it’s really hard to overlook. It’s amazing at everything so yeah “too good”.

      @@koruki Sorry, I can't see your point through the strawmanning. The score was higher for this than the latest 911 range review by Carsguide so I guess they think it's pretty good.
      The use of "too good" in the video was made in relation to what some enthusiasts may prefer in a car and not the majority of buyers, nor was it a slight on the Tesla. These enthusiasts may find the Tesla perhaps too clinical and not requiring any skill to drive fast or to extract performance, too boring? they may prefer more challenging drives or more characterful cars, flaws often being associated with character. Just like some enthusiasts prefer manuals and some enthusiasts prefer automatics. To have a different preference is not wrong. Not everything is about EV vs ICE, I suggest "scared of upsetting the ice fans" fans is a far stretch and out of touch.

He constantly refers to these “enthusiasts” which is likely self proclaimed car guys who think ev’s are here to steal their precious combustion car. As for the 911, it better rank better than a $200k little car that can hardly fit a broom

      @@korukiHe's talking about a small cohort of enthusiasts, not all and not even a majority. I can certainly understand some enthusiasts not liking this Tesla as it asks nothing of the driver, it's talents are so good that anyone including your granny can hop in and go fast, the driver and their skills are almost superfluous.
      That despite the prodigious performance and undoubted ability it may leave some drivers cold. I have heard this sentiment expressed about some ice performance vehicles in the past so I don't think it's an ev hating thing. With a manual Porsche, I would have bet you understood involvement.

    The reality is that not EVERYTHING is controlled by the centre console. Music volume, track skip, cruise control speed, and distance to the front car are all controlled by the steering wheel scroll wheels. Failing that you can use voice control which is also controlled by the steering wheel scrolls. It's no big distraction to read the speed in the centre console. It's just a simple car to drive.

      What about vitals , such as lights , wipers , hazard lights , are they controlled via the screen .?

      @@davidcartwright5591 Lights are automatically engaged and there's a button on the stalk for the wipers. There's also a button for the hazard lights

      Depends of course on what constitutes a big distraction. Since i switched to cars with a head up display i realised how much safer it was to keep your eyes at the windscreen instead of looking down. And this is arguably even worse. I just wish Elon would drop his opposition to head up display.

    I have a Model 3 & rarely look at the speedo as I use autopilot everywhere but a HUD would be good. That awful wood grain is easily covered up with aftermarket carbon fibre covers. One foot driving is awesome rarely using the brake. The omission of Apple car play or android auto is not missed due to inbuilt apps. The biggest own goal is the voice controls simply don’t work with an Aussie accent. I haven’t paid for charging in 3 months of ownership using home solar. Performance of all variants is impressive.

    Nice vid, could feel your overall enjoyment.
    You have totally neglected to consider “voice control” for controls, which is excellent.
    NB FSDriving is restricted by the individual states and mainly around consistently having to hold onto the wheel.
    Battery is 8 years warranty.

    Interesting this car has Pirelli tyres. Other regions seem to be reliever with Michelins.

    11:50 Y performance is 8 years or 192 000km arranty, same for M3 Perf, non perf are 8/160k km. Whilw S and X are warranty 8 years or 240 000 km.

    Ok, so you mention that the charging speed can go up to 250 kw but show it charging at a much slower 50 kw charger. Would have been nice to see it charging at a Tesla supercharger instead.

      Yes but it has good auto wipers, auto lights including high beam and climate including seat and steering wheel heat.

    long range with boost upgrade is the way to go in my opinion. 4.2 secs to highway speed and save about $15k. the sound system in these teslas are fantastic and since you have no engine noise you can really enjoy your music.

      I have both the 3 and Y performance versions. The Y Performance was $42,000 with tow hitch added. The price difference was $3,500 to step up to the Performance from the dual motor. It seemed like a better deal than buying the boost. I would have purchased the rear spoiler and larger wheels eventually. The Performance is slightly faster than the dual motor with the boost and also has the track package and lower suspension. My Model 3 Performance has Mountain Pass coil overs and zero g wheels. The handling is much better now. I may change the Y suspension out as well next year.

    Wow 4 years and 80,000K's warranty on certain parts of the car, doesnt show confidence in how long its going to last. Though Australian consumer law might give you some extra protection.

      The base one is 90k but add in some wanted features and not long before you are up to 130k. I'm a porsche guy and after driving one of these I could not justify getting a porsche.
      I'd go for the Y long range for 88k,still does 0 to 100 in 5 secs!

    Bummer it’s so much more expensive than the LRY in Australia - in the USA it’s $4k more and upgrading the wheels from 19 to 20 is $2,000 of that. Sure the LR Y is fast enough and the 19s are going to be more comfortable with larger range. But for my money I got the performance as you only live once and there will be more smiles over the miles! (And both models now qualify for the same tax incentive)

    I’ll admit to being slightly confused by the lack of energy and excitement in a video entitled “ludicrous performance”.
    Would be nice to see what the car is capable of - but it seems sterile and lacking in driver engagement. I’m sure folk will jump on here to explain that’s not true and how fun to drive it is - but this didn’t come across in the video for me.

    $40,000+ difference between RWD and Performance if you use the novated lease method, reduced 'performance breaks'. Just couldnt justify the difference.. You could buy 2 MY RWD on Novated lease for the same cost!

    As a regular viewer, I feel all Aussie motoring journalists need to eat humble pie after critiquing pretty much every other vehicle that features a touch screen interface to access certain vehicle functions; namely HVAC controls and radio operation. This Tesla relies entirely on its central screen. Even current speed. Tell me that's not a dangerous feature!!

      I agree . In a country where touching your mobile phone whilst driving for a millisecond can get you a fine and or driving ban , it’s suddenly ok to be sat in front of and be a slave to a touch screen in a Tesla . Seems like double standards to me .

      The truth is that not everything is controlled by the centre screen. The presenter failed to mention that the scroll wheels on the steering wheel control many features as well as the steering wheel stalks. Then there's the voice control as well. These are all conveniently not disclosed

      Been out for 6 years and ranked safest car in the world. The temp controls are in a constant position just like a button. The voice control can change temp and fan speeds. The climate control can be set to auto so the fan speeds change based on set temp. Same for all the music. Vol and skip etc al control with real dials on the steering wheel.

    This is a horrible review as this guy is supposed to know ALL the features of the vehicle if you are a real automotive journalist reviewing a product. I own this vehicle. Mine is a 2022. This guy complains about having to use the screen, but if he did his homework he would have know that you hardly EVER have to use the main console because the voice commands in Tesla software is really that good. See for yourself. There are plenty of videos on TH-cam about Tesla voice commands. I can even issue commands from my Apple Watch with the STATS app. The seats are great. 20K miles in and they still look new and they are white. I wish these people would take the time to learn everything about the vehicles they review before making videos.

    Very dated design. No vehicle to load (V2L) No Apple Carplay, Android Auto, no dash cluster, no heads Up display

      Define dated design. Its got very efficient aero, state of the art manufacturing that legacy manufacturers can only dream of, allowing it to excel in crash tests, gets regular OTA software enhancements and new features, carplay and android are redundant due its inbuilt nav capabilities. Absence of dash cluster means you see the road very close to front of the car and the speed is easily visible, look at the video. What more do you need?
      V2L is a gimmick at this time, unless you want to pull over and boil your kettle and if your house is plugged in what happens if you need to drive. Tesla make a product called a powerwall that integrates with your house and ev via the excellent app.

      I've got a new Jimny and a Model 3 and I much prefer the Model 3 system compared to my Jimny's carplay. I've never needed V2L my entire life but I do agree about the HUD, that would be useful.
