  • The Tesla Model Y is the most popular electric SUV in the world. But should it be?
    In this review, I test out the Model Y and tell you all about its electric driving range, recharging, interior, THAT centre screen, the space and practicality, and the value for money it offers.
    With so much technology and safety gear packaged in, it's hard not to see the Tesla Model Y as the benchmark for the EV SUV segment. But with so many new rivals coming, does that make it The Right Car?
    Watch my detailed Model Y 2023 review (including specs and RWD / Performance details).

    Good review Matt. Have been driving a MY RWD now for almost 6 months and coming from an ICE have enjoyed the experience. Screen takes a little while to get used to and some things don't make sense.
    A couple of things:
    * the performance has a DUAL MOTOR badge on the back
    * there's rear passenger detection which will turn on / off the rear air vents. same with the front passenger seat
    * suspension has been updated in 2023 builds / deliveries and there have been positive reviews
    * 1 pedal driving assists with the efficiency of the car
    Personally overall I think it's a great package and looking forward to seeing other EVs as they get released in Aus!

    Nice review. Just ordered the RWD after the 1st July 2023 price cut. An even better value proposition now. Have been driving Model 3 for almost 2 years now. Soon got used to the screen (intuitive) and voice commands work very well. I was a rusted on BMW owner for decades. The BMW Heads up Display is the only thing I would miss (but that’s all)

    Thank you. Excellent review. I have a MY RWD on order and it should be here early May. I have been having some reservations over buying the MY the main ones are to do with the lack of HUD and ride firmness. Our other EV is the BYD Atto 3 which is an absolutely sensational car. Very comfortable inside, great looks, smooth ride and of course, the HUD. Where the MY wins is its interior volume and for me, internal and external design. I just love the sparsity the MY offers. I'm hoping that mine may have the latest comfort suspension but of course, I'll have to wait until May to find out. Thank you once again mate.

      Thanks Lucien! I’m fairly sure yours will have the new suspension. I would love to try it out and see how much it has improved things - I’ve heard it’s a game changer for the car, so I hope that’s the case.
      Wow you’re all in on EVs! I’ve got an Atto 3 in the works…. Things just keep getting in the way of me reviewing it!

    We bought the same model as you reviewed two months ago. You do get used to the speedo pretty much straight away so to me that’s not an issue. Auto headlights now work really well which is more than can be said for the hapless auto wipers…atrocious! However next software update hopefully will employ all cameras in rain detection and smart AI and not just rely on the windscreen camera.
    Navigation on the touchscreen is 2nd to none. It is superb and range estimates are spot on now.
    They do come standard with Apple car play now which is great as well as Zoom.
    I love the minimalist feel of the interior, so much less stress than conventional cars. Again you get used to remote operation through the touchscreen really quickly.
    All in all I absolutely love the car. Soo easy to drive with one pedal driving especially on twisty country roads it’s a dream😊
    Never ever going back to an ICE car that’s for certain.
    Very good review btw👍

    Good review video with subjective and objective commentary. I agree that the Kia EV6 is a good competitor in the class. I also am waiting to see the Fisker Ocean. They are planning the installation of a hydrogen station about 8 miles from my house, so I am waiting to see how the roll-out of hydrogen in Southern California. I am hoping that the new 2024 Model Y takes care of the rough suspension and adds the instrument binnacle above the steering wheel. Thanks

      Thanks, and hello Southern California - love it there.
      The hydrogen situation is a great one to keep your eye on there. Here it’s a very, very slow burn.
      The 2023 update launched here just a few weeks back seems to have been a revelation for the suspension. I hope to test it at some point!

    Another well put together review - with your interesting style! I know Tesla are a great car, a mate has a 3 - but honestly -too bland inside for me, I like buttons and lights and looking amazing inside at night. Even more so at these prices! I want showy bling haha. That's part of an appeal of a car to me, always has been. Having to use the 1 offset screen for everything - nup - lucky other makes are more traditional in layout.

      @InIn456 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was just like you an loved the bling, my previous cars had big curved screens, lots of buttons, piano black and colour-changing ambient lighting... Strangely enough I got over all the bling and chose Tesla, I now love the minimalist interior and how elegant it looks... So easy to clean too. I'm just getting some aftermatket ambient lighting for the back passengers (which my kids requested) all in all though, I'm so impressed and really enjoy the driving experience. Going from Mercedes to Tesla feels like an upgrade, plus the software updates are regular and Tesla are always bringing out cool new features.

    So if I’m up in Meekatharra how long would it take Tesla to get there with the spare wheel?

      About as long as it would for any replacement tyre, I assume. A month? Ha!

    • @InIn456
      @InIn456 ปีที่แล้ว

      They outsource third parties (24 hour service) to come and replace the wheel, they do it straight away... Therefore no long wait times. I keep a repair kit under the boot just in case, some Tesla owners keep their own spare (for longer trips)

    1. Do you recommend this car over hybrids it is used as a casual uber rides/deliveries?
    2. Do you still recommend this car if owner doesn't have home charging capability and solely depend on public/superchargers?

    • @therightcar
      @therightcar  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would say to make it worth your while as an Uber car you need proximity to fast charging and a home charger. But if “casual Uber” means, like, only one a week - it wouldn’t be that big of an issue.
      I would say though, that you can get a lot a hybrid car for the money of this EV.

  • @TheHayabusa09

    Another fine review Matt, but I'm astounded by the 100% reliance you need to dedicate to that one center screen..You heavily critiqued the screen in the Haval vehicles that you have to input numerous commands to operate HVAC, yet in this Tesla, you can't even open the glovebox manually..Plus the fact that you need to continually watch said screen for current speed and hope that your phone doesn't drop out when relied on for directions. OH, and good luck getting a replacement to swap over for that flat tyre you just encountered, in the country, over the weekend! A definite no for me.

    • @therightcar
      @therightcar  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You got a thick Aussie accent? Try using voice control with one. You’ll realise it’s rubbish.

  • @feetup-jf7kq
    @feetup-jf7kq ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As a Model 3 owner, have to disagree with most of what you said as negatives. The speed top left on screen is not an issue after about 10min driving. Once setup screen interaction is minimal as there are auto functions/ shortcuts for wipers and lights plus voice commands work reasonably well. What you said about it being a safety concern is crap. If you need to look at the screen engage the autopilot or speed mode. Regenerative braking means it holds speed far better than ice vehicles. Battery prediction is readily available if a destination is entered for longer trips, plus will precondition the battery if a supercharger is selected as destination.
    Apple airplay / android auto are redundant on teslas as the nav works so well. It also has apple music and one of the best sound systems available in a car. Cross traffic is visible on the wide angle reversing camera, and has been added as an OTA software update recently.
    The Tesla phone app works as the key, can see the camera views remotely, preset aircon, track, unlock & allow others to drive it, control and monitor charging, software updates, find nearby superchargers availability and price , send nav route to the car. Can book service and get charge stats etc etc.
    BTW biggest giveaway for the performance MY are the red brake callipers.

    • @therightcar
      @therightcar  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s fine, you can disagree.

  • @androo4519
    @androo4519 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You have to think that Tesla's engineers are working on improvements to the ride to match this car's rivals. It seems to be a real weakness, especially considering what seems like pretty sophisticated suspension geometry and hardware. Perhaps it's a matter of tuning, which obviously isn't as easy as it sounds. I would otherwise consider buying one but might just hang on for an improved version.

    • @therightcar
      @therightcar  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah there are rumours and reports of such. It needs attention, but I don’t think it’s a deal breaker for most buyers because most buyers don’t care, apparently! It’s the same reason you see BMWs, Audis and Mercs with the biggest wheels possible.
