    Excellent video. Thank you!
    Pro tip: an adjustable wrench laid on its side works great as adapter plate for removing lock plate.

    • @rickc2222
      @rickc2222 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for tip! i had a huge wrench and it allows just enough room to pick that retainer clip out. some old wheel bearing races and large washers and the steering wheel nut and you have yourself a spring compressor tool!

    This is by far the best video I've ever seen on removing all the GM components of air bag to switch housing, very accurate.

    FYI for anyone else doing this: Chime sensor should be removed before removing the lock cylinder. Had me stumped.

    I was struggling with this project, watched lots of videos, as well as written instructions. Your video was the most helpful, by far! Also, instead of buying the GM adapter plate I just used my vise to squeeze the legs of the lock plate tool together. Worked great and I think it gave more working clearance than the plate would've. Thanks for the help!

    If only I had seen your video earlier I broke that black cable didn't know it had to be in off position. Saw several videos but none explained how to remove it looked online but found nothing. Out of all the videos I've seen this man is the most detailed and you can't go wrong. I just had no luck finding this video before I broke a part. If your vehicle is stolen replace the hub and the cylinder switch if you do just one your likely to have both parks fail few months apart.

    Dude... seriously awesome video!!! You have the only video I can find ON TH-cam showing how to "PROPERLY" get too and remove the mother lovin' Ignition switch/lock housing! Or any other component of the upper steering shaft in reality but I just wanted to comment and say, Very good video and very helpful as I just completed this exact same repair after watching your video and my tool/s arriving in the mail! Lol!! Good job, and thanks bro!

    My ignition key cylinder was jammed into the housing so I bought a new ignition lock housing online. I went through all the steps to reinstall new ignition lock housing. The new housing has yellow plastic dummy key in it and we don't know how to release so a new ignition cylinder can be put in. Thank for your excellent video which we followed many times.

    This video helped so much. I have an 01 tahoe that someone tried to steal and completed destroyed the part of the housing that the passlock is held in. Luckily the went too far and couldn't get away with the vehicle. But until i found this video i had no idea what the components were called. Thank you so much

    Great job on explaining your video I had a GMC dealer install a clock spring in my 2005 Sierra service writer tryed to say passlock symbol was in my after market viper so I took it back to alarm installer showed me that everything on his end was properly working so I went back to the GMC dealer showed him it was his clock spring tech that didn't re-program system like you explained in your video (we all make mistakes but come on to try and say it was the alarm tech I sure didn't have the passlock symbol when I went there all n all dealer got it fixed 😉)at no extra charge ) Great Job on. Your passlock video !!!

    this video is accurate and very helpful. BUT at the end the relearning procedure leaves out a detail. if you have any other lights ie (low washer fluid or low fuel) the security light will cycle. allow the lights to cycle before turning key to off position . do not turn off as soon as light goes off wait till it no longer comes back. i spent all day turning the key off as soon as the security light cut off

    grate video .I've had this problem for 3 years so far .it comes and goes and I cant take it anymore . my mechanic told me that he knew the problem and said its common .so I had him change the key lock cylinder.Well he was wrong did not fix it $300 fix .So I had an aftermarket alarm with auto start ,that's when I think all my problems started.so after a while I had it removed.Still not sure that was it .All the wires were solderd together .so after a while of looking into all the you tube video's ,everyone said it was the plug up top with the 3 wire's loose fit ,so I did the wire tie thing and wedged it in and I cleand all contact's at that time to. Well that's not the fix .So my next move is to change the pass lock case with sensor. thanks for this video again it was helpful .I will repost after I replace case and sensor. ps would I be better to buy this online or go to dealer.thanks marc

    Thanks for this, very helpful. I did it without a steering puller (mallet and some not-so-gentle persuasion) and without the adapter plate...not as easy for sure, but it works- - used a large adjustable wrench as plate and some old wheel bearing races and large washers as spacers.

    Might be good to rename this video something like "Chevrolet Truck Passlock fix instead of bypass" as there are tons of videos on bypassing the sensor. This is the only one I could find for repairing the problem. More people will find the video with the rename. I made a lock plate adapter with a 2x4 and a few wood boring drill bits. BTW - This is the same part for my 2004 Tahoe, so it applies to lots of trucks. Great video!

    Very Helpful video. However, if you're not careful when pressing spring back down you can break the turn signal cancel cam and the wheel bearing that sits behind the spring. I broke both. It was a pain to get out the race part of the bearing. Had to cut it outwith a dremmal. When that bearing breaks the steering wheel wobbles all over the place. I should have made a video on relacing of bearing because thereis only one video on that replacement. Everyone has a video on loewer column bearing but nothing on upper column bearing.

    Do you have to remove the lock cylinder in order to pull the housing off? I'm working on a k15 right now and I can't get the lock cylinder out and the housing is broke. I'm hoping I can pull the entire housing off with the lock cylinder still in and put the new one in the new housing. Thank you!

    I know you did this video awhile back and it’s a great video! I was following it and when I went to get the key buzzer connector it fell apart. There’s the plastic connector pieces, a little copper thing I’m assuming the two wires connect to, a spring, and then the orange and the green wires. I can snap together the two plastic pieces but I don’t know how the things that fell out of it fit in it… can you help at all?

    Good video! I have a 2001 GMC Sierra I replaced my ignition switch case and did the relearn it worked ok for a couple of days. Three days later I came out of work into a snow storm at midnight and turned the key and the truck started ok but when when I put it in gear the security light came on and my headlights went out. I tried to make it do a relearn but the sucurity light just keeps flashing I left it turned on for an hour and it flashed the while time. I have a battery charger on it to keep the battery from getting drained.I used my ElmScan 5 code reader to clear what codes I could find just a couple of (lean mixture error codes) Any Ideas what else could be wrong with this truck I'm about to call a wrecker to come get it for scrap. in 3 weeks Iver been able to drive if for 2 days and it's cost me 140 to buy that new switch.

But a screwdriver used to turn the thing in the housing wont budge past 90 either!! Could this mean the gear in the housing might be bad somehow..? What might have happened?

You have to pull air bag fuse and battery neg cable off.and to pop off air bag you have to turn steering wheel to the left and right .So you mite want to jack up the front of car just off the ground so you can turn the steering wheel then use a small screw driver to push in spring clips .each side of the air bag should pop ,if they don't your doing it wrong.get a lite and mirror to find the clips it took me less then a minute to remove air bag very easy.next thing that is not shown and im not sure exactly what you call it is on the back of the housing case ,is 2 plastic pieces make sure you know what position its in .a small pic is needed to take out the first plastic piece .Ok after you have it ready to install put in one screws snug. Put the key cylinder back in then to the off position ,put you ignition switch in and turn it to crank and make sure you key turns. sometime when you put the ignition switch back in it may be out a tooth don't panic its easy to figure it out .I had all the tools and some know how after I watched this video it helped me out a lot and the key relearn took 1 hour did not work the first time My fault .So if you have that Damm security lite on and sometimes your car don't start change the passlock sensor don't listen to the guy that said its the passlock plug on top of case

    Hi
    I did it how you explained it. I got the ignition case in a junk yard and bought a new key cylinder but when I installed it, the key won't turn. What can I do to solve this?

      +ramiro2699 Either they cylinder was coded incorrectly or the key is cut wrong. You will have to drill a hole in the case so you can depress the spring loaded tab within the case so it will slide out.

    After compressing the spring and putting the locking c-ring back on, my steering column is now "wobbly". So when I put my steering wheel on, it can wobble around quite a bit. Any idea on what this could be? Thank you!

    My 03 Silverado 1500 5.3 liter cranks but no start. Had the gas lines replaced with filter then the crankshaft sensor, the camshaft sensor, the PCM (was programed to vin), the driver window switch, and a relay. It has no five volt reference detected at PCM and no ignition pulse. Do you think it could be the passlock 2 sensor that comes with the cylinder case? This look the same but my security switch has the lock icon. My security switch does go out after a second and is not blinking. My key is crunchy but does crank after a wiggle. Steering wheel must come off to replace case with passlock 2 sensor, correct? What suggestions? Thanks, Richie

    I need that tool for the cancel cam whats is it called and can you only get it for GM?

    • @joshpadget7663
      @joshpadget7663 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +rcastanaga The plate tool number is Kent Moore J-42137. The lock plate compressor is J-23653. An aftermarket compressor can be had for under $20 if you poke around online...or maybe even local auto parts store. The plate can probably be made out of 1/8 plate steel. Or if you know someone at a GM dealer you could try to borrow one.

    What if I need to replace the lock and don't have a key ? How can I turn it to the on position to get it out ??

    • @gmhow-to7583
      @gmhow-to7583  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +adrtorresgzz The only way to get the cylinder out without the key is to drill a hole in the case so you can depress the tab on the lock cylinder. Even then they are not fun to get out. May have to pay to get a key cut by the dealer by supplying them with your VIN and proof of ownership.
