    [chorus]
    [D5] Shady grove, [Csus2] my little love
    [D5] Shady grove, I know
    [D5] Shady grove, [Csus2] my little love
    [Csus2] I'm bound for shady [D5] grove

    [chorus]
    [D5] Wish I had a [Csus2] needle and thread, [D5] fine as I could sew
    [D5] I'd sew that pretty girl [Csus2] to my side and down the road I'd [D5] go
    [chorus]

    Yep, the "Man of Constant Sorrow" lead me here. Thoroughly enjoyed both videos. I've heard many bluegrass bands play Shady Grove (at 150 mph) that were very good, but when done in double drop d like this it is a beautifully haunting song. Thanks for sharing this technique. If you have more drop d or double drop d I'd love to here them.

      Thanks Randy. Thinking of adding Neil Young’s “Captain Kennedy” and “Ohio” as a medley. Neil loves this tuning.

    One of my favorite versions of "Shady Grove" -- on TH-cam -- is Carson McKee's. His feel for time is Tony Rice level - or awfully close. He plays this tune in a modal key, using a partial capo -- very nice sound. His singing is top-level, too. Check him out!

    • @campfire_guitar_lessons
      @campfire_guitar_lessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Patrick! I went into a store to buy strings and ended up picking this thing up and playing it. The tone spoke to me. Very easy to play, too. The only down side, besides the cost, is that I cannot really dig into it. Being a short scale, 12-fret to body model, it buzzes and overdrives if you play it hard. I recently acquired a Gibson SJ 200, which can withstand digging in. I have been waiting for a custom build from a private luthier for about 6 months. It should be here some time in early May. Keep your eyes open for that one... I'm hoping it has even more mojo than the Taylor.

    • @campfire_guitar_lessons
      @campfire_guitar_lessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not aware of one, Louis. There is a DADGAD style capo from Shubb that can clamp on three internal strings. So it can either go on strings 5-4-3 for EBEABD ( DADGAD raised up a step) or on strings 4-3-2 for EAEAC#E (which is like an open G intervals raised a full step). Fun capo to have, but I don’t use it all that often.

    Mike! What a fantastic approach to this great old song! Like others here, I was drawn to it by first seeing your lesson on Man of Constant Sorrow, and I'm sure glad that I did! I'm busy learning Man of Constant Sorrow on bluegrass banjo (in the key of F), and this guitar lesson of yours is helping me to make some sense of the banjo tablature. Anyway, you've got a very nice, slow, outstanding temperment for teaching others music lessons, and I hope you'll continue to do so. It's very much appreciated. ;-)
    By the way, have I missed something? Have you actually published the tabs for Shady Grove anywhere, like you did with Man of Constant Sorrow?

    Mike, you talk kind of fast and I'm from Tennessee so I listen kind of slow. Would you call out the strum pattern please? Thanks a million.

    • @campfire_guitar_lessons
      @campfire_guitar_lessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem, Bruce. Pluck the bass note, then do a down up down up down up strum on the treble strings. Kind of a “boom chucka chucka chucka” pattern. Boom on the bass, chuckas on strings 1 through 3. Hope that helps!
