  • Need a quick way to tell if your bellows are good or not? Both cost over a $100--so the least you could do is watch my video a head of time to know if your bellows are good or not. Keep in mind you should also raise your transom housing up and down to flex the bellows.

    good video... but when boat is in water there's water pressure on all sides of the bellows and there could be a crack anywhere in the bellows not just the bottom..

    Do you have a video on how to replace omc cobra u joint bellows?

      I’m looking for a video aswell. I’ve been struggling trying to get the u joint bellow inside the pivot housing. There must be a trick to it?

      I ended up just having a go at it. The hose clamp/worm screw should be at about the 2-3pm o’clock position to be able to tighten it with a long screw driver or socket. When trying to fit the new one, it seemed like it was getting caught on the shift cable lever, so I coated a little bit of grease to allow it to slide over the “vulnerable “parts in the swivel housing area. Not too keen on breaking anything more than necessary! The u joint bellows takes a bit of squeezing and massaging to get it in place. Then it’s just a task of tightening the hose clamp and make sure the metal tab with wire attached ( not sure what it’s called) goes on too. Bit of bellows adhesive and your all done.

      @@graemewood1216 quick question, did you have the swivel housing on a bench to try and get it into place. I tried with it attached to the transome bracket bit got frustrated and took it off and tried on the bench still without any luck. My hands are large and strong, I pretty much have to use my fingers to work with

    • @graemewood1216
      @graemewood1216 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, I left the housing in place. I have the tendency to break things by doing more than I need to. ”if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”
      That being said I used one hand in the bellows to get the bellows in thought the housing and the other hand in and underneath to help position it, as there isn’t much room. Kinda need to pivot it up as much as you can to make the room. Also smear a bit of grease on the outside of the bellows to make it easy to slide into position without the rubber gripping/binding to those breakable parts.

    I noticed the other end of the exhaust Bellow There’s no clamp do you just add adhesive to the end?

    • @michaelromer2016
      @michaelromer2016  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a clamp. Keep in mind it’s there just for noise control as the exhaust bellow lives under water, with water in bellow.

      The bellow end goes inside not over the drive so how do you put the clamp?

    Just picked up a boat and testing the cooling system. And I noticed with my exhaust bellow the exhaust water /exhaust goes out the out drive but there is a gap between the actual boat and lower unit to the exhaust bellow. Just wondering if this is normal or if the exhaust bellow is supposed to be a flea. Line connected to the exhaust. My boats a little loud and thought that might be the reason. Any help is appreciated

      I thought I commented on this already--it must not have took. The perforations in the exhaust bellow is normal. If it is cracked or partially detached, I recommend replacing it. The common reason to replace them is excessive exhaust noise.

    hi i have a creamy oil leaking from my bellows what kind of seal would be leaking

    • @michaelromer2016
      @michaelromer2016  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Linda Turner The bellows have a adhesive that attaches them to the transom housing. That's the only native liquid that would be naturally found there--keep in mind that would be hardened by the time you'd see it. The other native liquid found around marine gasket seals are what is referred as gasket sealer. It's basically a brown sticky gasket compound used to reinforce seals in marine environments. Both compounds I mentioned are found around sealing surfaces--places with gaskets, near the bellows. Are you seeing something that looks like oil? Dab the suspected compound on your fingers. If it's sticky it's gasket compound If it's hard, it's bellows adhesive. If it's slippery and smells like motor oil, that's another reply altogether.

    oil and what reseal kit do i get for my upper unit thanks

    • @michaelromer2016
      @michaelromer2016  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Linda Turner Hey if you have oil in the upper bellows you have a major leak coming from your bearing carrier seal. There is a seal kit but it's useless without a lot of very expensive tools. You need to send it off to be repaired. Ignoring the issue with damage more parts as water gets in and/or oil leaks out. Costs about $600 www.sterndrive.info/id132.html

      I don't have a video on that one yet. Your parts can be found here: epc.brp.com/Index.aspx?lang=E&s1=0d631b7b-efe3-4bc4-8df0-a76cbe9742af Select "Stern Drive" and the year of your stern drive. Select the model engine and look for "Upper Gear Housing." I recommend the gear housing seal kit or if you want to just replace one part, you need the bearing carrier seal and o-ring. The part numbers on that site can be plugged into eBay/Amazon.

    I do not think this is a good test since you are only checking the bottom, could have leak from top or sides. Since this is an sx should be able to loosen front clamp after its been in water and see if water comes out. Also if your this far into it just replace the bellows already. Check for outside cracks dry rot etc. Exhaust bellows has 2 drain holes on bottom sx-m anyway. not sure which sx drive this is.

    • @michaelromer2016
      @michaelromer2016  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's definitely not a perfect test. Keep in mind a lot of people remove their outdrive every year. For that reason, it's not always going to be the case that you should replace the bellows when you have the outdrive out. I'm going to be doing another video this week where I pull a Volvo Penta SX outdrive. I'll do I update video.
