  • So eventually your engine will fall out of alignment with your transom--it's just a matter of time. You could do two things 1.) ignore it and eventually trash your gimbal bearing or 2.) watch part two of this video to see how one adjusts their engine alignment. One thing is for sure, you need this tool if you own an stern drive.

Hey Michael, great videos and super helpful! I replaced my gimbal bearing in my '92 Four Winns with an OMC Cobra, and can't even get the alignment tool into the engine output. The front motor mounts got it visually close, and I used a 1" pipe in the motor output to see if I could visually center it in the gimbal bearing. I think its centered, but the motor may be at an angle. Do you have a video on a full alignment with front as well as rear motor mounts? I'm wondering if my rear mounts are compressed.

Hey brother this are great videos thanks for that..I’m doing gimbal bearing in my boat 2004 glastron sx 195 with a 5.0 Volvo penta.. my gimbal bearing went really bad and it came out on parts. But now I don’t know if I got all the bearing parts out .. I would like to sent you some pictures so you can tell me how to remove the rest .. do you have any email or something for that?

If the alignment is out will things vibrate?

You are likely hearing a u-joint going out. Try making sure the engine is aligned as well.

Is there an easy way to know when my drive is out of alignment? I have a used 2009 Volvo Penta 3.0 with 100 hours that seems to run okay in the water but I've been on smoother boats. Is there a visual inspection I can do while it's running or other technique? Don't want to remove the outdrive just to check the alignment unless you think that's something I should do. BTW, the previous owner had the lower unit serviced and I just wonder if the techs did a good job on alignment. Thanks in advance for anyone's help! Oh, and thanks Michael for the super helpful videos, marine mechanics charge an arm and a leg!

Hey Paul. The #1 symptom of an engine being out of alignment comes from constantly wearing out gimbal bearings. The second is abnormal noises that mimic a bearing going out-like a wheel bearing on a truck, it squeaks a lot. Otherwise, what you have would be resolved (hopefully) with maintenance e.g., spark plugs, wires, Amsoil gas treatments.

@@michaelromer2016 Thanks Michael, that helps. Thankfully, I don't think I have that problem but it's good to know what to do. Great channel, thanks for all you do.

Hey Michael! First I want to thank you for all these great videos you have. I have learned a lot. But, I have a problem with my 1989 Cobra 4.3 with an alignment issue. I replaced the noisy gimbal bearing but I can not get my alignment tool to go in smoothly. I greased it and it shows that the splines on the coupler are hitting on the top. Lower the front, right? My front of the engine is all the way down. It seems like the rear is sitting too low. Can you give me any advice please?

Take your time on this process. If it takes you 3 days, it takes three days. Pro tip, doing engine alignment by yourself, will be painful. Pay someone if you must to sit in the back to continuously try to get the tool in, then have them check for resistance. Watch this: th-cam.com/video/HGQ0d111dLw/w-d-xo.html

My problem is that no matter where the front is, the rear is always too low. It's kind of like something is wrong with my rear mounts.? I know the previous owner had the engine replaced and it appears that they didn't do a good job.
On the front mounts they took off the nut under the bracket and added it to the top. The then added some flat washers between the bracket and the bottom nut to really lower the engine. But, the rear is still too low.

One more thing. I saw a video where they were centering the gimbal on a Mercruiser. Do we do this on mine?

Neal Blue Can you tell if the transom or engine mounts had been replaced? Basically, you would see fiberglass work.

Neal Blue I experimented once with changing the height of the rear mounts and it wasn’t fun. I ran a custom height on the rear mounts for a season. It wasn’t worth doing and not worth you trying either. Keep in mind one thing, the rear mounts are designed to not be adjustable.
