Honda's AWD Hybrid, the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid

  • Honda has been promising more hybrids for a while now, and the CR-V Hybrid for 2020 is the first in an onslaught of new hybrid, plug-in hybrid and EV models by 2025. For the 2020 CR-V, Honda surprised everyone by going in a different direction than Toyota and they used a mechanical AWD system rather than an electric motor on the rear axle. The result? A more capable hybrid albeit with slightly lower economy and performance. Is it worth it?

Don't forget that it also fits a gallon of milk in the arm rest! :)
On a serious note, I think I've read an article in Japanese media that this is in deed prepared platform for PHEV. I'm not so sure about which platform that was thought, but it was over a year ago. CR-V hybrid is available in Japanese for few years.
Both Honda and Subaru decided to offer mechanical AWD in their hybrid models and as such it is harder to install it under the seats as it might clash with the drive for the rear wheels.
Btw: there is something called e-Boxer on some markets. It is a 2.0l NA soft hybrid from Subaru. In Japan, XV/Crossreck and Forester can be equipped with a hybrid.
CR-V is the most comfortable medium size SUV for me. I am short (5'5/170cm) and can't rest my elbow on the armrest in CX5/RAV4/Forester.
Mechanical AWD is awesome bonus for me personally, but it should not be standard. For those who do not need it, the much higher costs of maintenance are just not worth it. For those who need AWD on a daily basis, this is an awesome choice.

Disagree about the styling comments and the desire to see more dramatic styling changes. The CR-V has nearly reached iconic styling status, meaning that the design is so well ingrained and accepted that tinkering with it will most likely end up with a less pleasing result. Heck, 10 year-old CR-V's still look as handsome today as when they were first produced. Does Porsche make big changes to new 911 models? When you reach that point, you don't screw too much with the formula.

I was waiting for the CR-V Hybrid to come out before I got the RAV4 Hybrid. But it not having a spare tire and producing less gas mileage than the RAV4 is definitely a deal breaker for me. If I weren't in the market for a hybrid, I'd choose the CR-V for its slightly more comfortable seats and roomier cabin and trunk. However, since I want a hybrid, it's gonna be the RAV4. You truly don't appreciate a spare tire until you're stranded on the side of the road, at night, because your fix-a-flat can't seal a ripped sidewall. An hour wait for a tow truck to bring you to a closed dealership or tire shop. I can put on a spare in no less than 15 mins and be on my way. #SaveTheSpareTire

I'm quite content with the eAWD system in my RAV4 Hybrid. I live in an area with quite a bit of snow and inclement weather but have yet to be let down by it. It's a very different feel than mechanical AWD but it gets the job done just fine, it's more about the tires used (in my opinion). When doing the figure 8 I was impressed to see the RAV4 overdriving the rear axle and kicking up some sand/dirt. Night and day difference from the weak system in the previous generation RAV4 Hybrid.

I was wondering if it would be better to switch to using run-flat tires so that in case that does happen you can drive enough to get to a locale where you can fix or replace the flat tire. Anyone know of any reasons this would be a bad thing to do ?

I like the CRV but the lack of a spare tire throws me to the Rav-4. However it is nice to save $5k and get a small spare tire for the CRV & find a way to store in the back where it takes up the least amount of room.
I like the bigger passenger space in the rear seat of the CRV also. Something else to think about, Toyota for the 2020 model year offers a 10yr 150k mile warranty on their hybrid battery. I'm very disappointed with cars being sold, now, without even a donut spare. Just bought 2021 CR-V hybrid and could not imagine traveling anywhere but a city or suburb without a spare. I have purchased a full-size spare (same size but different manufacturer) that I carry on the roof; not elegant, but better than a can of sealant and a compressor that only works with the perfect puncture and the only alternative is being towed. I live and travel in Maine and could not tolerate being away, in bad weather, without a spare. If I use the spare (or, horror, a donut), is it less likely to cause damage or excess wear if I use it on a front or rear wheel until I can get a better replacement? Thoughts?

    • @jeffjo8732
      @jeffjo8732 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'll assume you drive the AWD version. So based on your driving style, you are getting 6 mpg better than its 29 MPG EPA rating. In the hybrid, that means you could expect 44 mpg, And yes, people do get this mileage, if they have a good driving style like you do, just don't drive at high speeds thru the mountains like Alex did.
For the $1,200 extra, you get a car that has _more_ _power_ and is actually _less_ complex. It has no turbo-charger, no transmission, no alternator, no starter motor, and no serpentine belt. On gas alone @ $3/gal, payoff at 68K miles. If you consider well-documented lower maintenance costs, about 30K miles.

No, 2WD. I drive 70% highway, at 70-75 MPH, and the rest is city driving. If I drop my hwy speed to 65, I can get close to 40 MPG; at 60, close to 45, and at 55, close to 50 MPG!

john smith So agree. Consumer Reports is just awful. They lost their way with competition from Angie’s list, Yelp, Amazon ratings, YT. Most of their reliability reports are due to idiot consumers who don’t know how to use the infotainment systems. And then, they have inconsistencies all over. Like Porsche gets top reliability except more Lexus and Toyota models get top reliability. Really ridiculous and makes you question whether there’s been some under table cash changing hands to keep their company afloat. On top of that, consumers these days often report with prejudices like Buyer’s remorse/confirmatory biases. Like someone who pays $100,000 for a crappy Porsche still says they love it and never had problems when they’ve actually only driven it 8,000 miles and taken it to the dealer 2-3 times(which they forgot about), while someone might have a cheap Honda for a daily driver that they’ve put 90,000 miles on and taken to dealer same amount of times not because of mechanical failure but because they couldn’t figure out how to turn the ac on, but hates their car because their friends never complimented it.

Honda is actually a motor company, known as AHM, is one of the most diverse companies in regards to motor products from automobile, marine engines, power equipment (including riding lawnmowers), motorcycles & ATVs, and small aircraft - HondaJet. Oh, and don't forget robots... Osimo.

3 strikes and the CRV is out. A better AWD system 90% of hybrid crossover buyers won't care about.

Some folks said the "fix" did not work. If you have one of those engines, you are in for more frequent oil changes, increased wear, shorter engine life and possibly stalling.
I traded mine for a 2020 Mazda CX 5 , Signature, and am VERY pleased (and much less anxious). The Mazda GOES with the 6 speed auto. The CVT in the CR-V is a slug.
