    Knitting my 11th pair of Opal socks as I watch this. They are the ones I reach for continually and even the oldest ones have not lost their shape or faded in the wash. Thanks for reviewing and for your honest opinion of all the yarn mentioned. 💕 from Ontario.

    Hello from England. My first pair of socks was knitted 21 years ago in Opal, as that was the only sock yarn available in the UK back then. I'm happy to say, I'm still wearing them weekly, and the only sign of wear is where I wove the end in at the cuff, that has unravelled slightly. Probably due to my sewing. No holes, no stretching, no felting. All my other Opals are the same, all made over 15 years ago, all worn weekly, all still going strong. Maybe you had a rogue ball. Xxxx

    This was very helpful. As someone who is learning how to knit and very interested in knitting socks specifically, it's great to know the pros and cons of each of these. I made a knitpicks order recently and it looks like I ended up picking some good yarns, so now I'm even more excited! Thank you!

    As a child I held my mother’s yarn hanks stretched between my hands, feeding the yarn to her as she wrapped it into balls. It was decades before I even saw a yarn swift or ball winder. I still wind my purchased hanks into balls myself, simply wrapping the hank around the back of a chair. There’s definitely a pleasure and therapy in the process as you examine your purchase and anticipate the knit project. Several knitters have the process documented in tutorials. It’s nice not having two more ‘gadgets’ in my home.

    Great video! I've used a lot of these yarns. Sorry you had problems with the Opal, I've done OK with it over the years. Fun coincidence - I'm using WYS for the very first time and was knitting with it when I turned on this video. I'm so happy to hear that it wears well, as the socks I'm knitting are a gift. Woo hoo!!

    So ya, the trick with Kroy is not to go up a needle size. Knit them on 2.25’s with your usual pattern. No holes, and can take washer/dryer.

    Hawthorne is my *favorite* mass-market yarn. Good to know about Patons Kroy being a little wonky with the matching balls...I've only done shorties and kid socks with it, and I liked the quality of the base itself, but if I wanted to match full sized socks it sounds like it could be a bummer.

    That’s so interesting. What you explained about your problems with Opal I had with WYS. I love their colors but they got worn out and sloppy within no time. Opal on the other hand holds up great, no holes, no sloppiness.

    I started ribbing my Opal socks so they would be tight at first and then stretch out to the right width. The reggia yarn was very itchy when knitting it but it doesn’t bother my feet. I am working on a pair of socks in the same Paton’s colorway for my husband. They are a little tight so I am glad they will stretch. My other Patons socks felted, too, but they are boot socks so I don’t mind. I used knitpicks muse for sock yarn and they are my softest socks but I worry about them wearing after time.

    Thank you for your review. I love opal yarn the best of all the yarns you showed. I am knitting a mitered square opal yarn blanket and really enjoy all the patterns and colors. I have knit with felici, reggia, patons kroy, and knit picks yarn, but feel that they are inferior in many ways. I would like to try Yorkshire spinners in the future.

    Great review and good to see the socks after years of wear. I’ve just finished a pair of Opal 6ply socks so it will be interesting to see how they go after a few washes. I’d love to know if you have knitted any socks without the nylon content and how they have worn.

    I loved this review. I'm quite new to sock knitting. I didn't wanna knit socks before because I thought it was gonna be a waste of time since they were gonna wear out and I want my knits to last forever. Last year, I fell in love with a sock pattern, so I decided to knit it and now I knit many socks. I'm super glad to see how the Hawthorne holds up with time because I've purchased a lot of it 😄
    Have you tried the alpaca sock yarn from Knit Picks? I'm knitting my second pair with it and it's so nice to wear. I can't wait to see how it does over time.

    Well poop, oh no not for your channel but about Opal..... :( i am almost done my second pair of socks ever (first pair was regia and love them) and these opal ones are beautiful but for my son for Christmas, now I'm wondering if i should keep them for myself....hmmmmm....i am and was knitting him multiple pairs from all different companies, the next ones were paton's kroy, haven't gotten past the opal yet though in your review so fingers crossed kroy is ok otherwise I'll need to go yarn shopping again....oh darn lol. Thanks so much for this video! I heard about it while watching knits 'n pieces with my fellow podcasters kelly and noelle, someone in the comments had just finished watching this video and told us all to watch but couldn't remember where to find it lol, i just happened to stumble across it today, the live was on Tuesday night but the person wasn't sure where she had seen it so I'm very glad to find it. Thanks again, now back to watch the rest! Happy Canada day btw!

    Not a question about yarn, but about your twins. Are they identical and when were they born? Mine are fraternal so they had their own placentas and sacs and were born at 36w5d. It must have been so scary to have a preterm labor scare but I’m glad you had sock knitting on hand to hopefully help you relax a little.

    Patons sock yarn has gone up to $7.50 U.S. per skein where I'm at so I've found that for the money it's really not worth it. There are nicer yarns (better quality, and color selection) for the same, or just a few dollars more so I'm using up what's in my stash and using other brands in the future.

  • @merinomagician2331
    @merinomagician2331 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Let me first say that I have 2 ball winders and three different swifts. Your comment about "needing a ball winder and a swift is just not true. Any yarn can be hand wound, eliminating the need for a ball winder. As for a swift, you can use the back of a chair or someone willing to help you out with their two hands. A ball winder and a swift certainly makes a knitter's life so much easier, neither is a necessity.
