Shelters are always in need of socks and usually only get cheap basics in bulk. Imagine getting one of these beautiful pairs

Sock are my favorite and primary knit but I don’t love wearing knit socks. I don’t have the right shoes and I don’t like wearing socks at home. I make socks based on whatever yarn/pattern I’m drawn to at the time. I make them approximately my size and some end up a little short, some a little long. Then I just toss them in a box. Once the box fills up or a holiday comes I let my friends/family choose socks they love or sometimes I choose for them as gifts. That way I can knit all the socks I want to without the guilt of tons of socks I never wear in my sock drawer.

I love all the different colors!
My great aunt taught me how to knit socks while I was visiting one summer in Vienna. That was when I was a teenager and haven’t made another pair since!
Your videos make me want to go ahead and start knitting socks again! 😊

This video was fun! If you do something like this in the future, it would be nice to have the correct name of the yarn dyer/ coloway on the screen for the ones that you didn't get right, just so we know without having to click through every link. Fun idea to make it a challenge 😀

This was so much fun! I just started knitting socks in December 2023 and I've finished 16 pairs so far. The Perfect Fit Socks course definitely helped me to customise my formula to give me my desired fit.

I get friendly teasing for it, but I legitimately wear toe socks any time I do any amount of walking with shoes on. My two smallest toes on each foot get pinch blisters when in shoes because they love to cuddle up to each other and get stepped on by the other toes. The idea of toe socks was so silly, but when I kept seeing it recommended while researching pinch blister prevention I gave them a try. And the little bit of padding and separation completely fixed the issue.

    Women’s shelters for sure!!
Also you can find online places that recycle textiles and could send the too worn ones that way to be recycled!

Safe travels!! It will be fun to see what adventures you get in to. Going down the sock drawer memory game was fun. I usually knit patterned or colorwork socks, so it's a bit easier to remember what I knit.

That was so fun! I have the opposite problem as you, I gift more hand knit socks than I keep! Thought I would change that up this year but still knitting for gifts more because of an increasing number of family members. I celebrate my “sock knitting anniversary” 8 years in July. I do still have and wear my first completed pair Rose City Rollers in Dream in Color Smooshy with Cashmere in Deep Seaflower. I wear shorty socks most of the year.

I do not have the first pair of socks I made. I made socks for my dad because he needed socks without elastic at the top. I made him several pairs of socks and I do still have one pair. He passed 15 years ago, so I have been making socks for a while. I think I have around 20 pairs of socks and enough yarn for at least that many more. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I'm a brand new sock knitter, but when I first started knitting I would do (and still make) washcloths! They're sort of a family tradition; my great-grandmother would do them and gift them at various holidays, and I found a pattern similar to what she would do and have taken up the tradition. To your point, though, when you knit a ton of a particular category, you start to look for ways to mix it up.
Re: recycling fabric scraps, I'm trying a place called For Days -- they sell clothing and things, but they also do a "take any linens" type of service for recycling into things like insulation for housing. You do pay $20/bag and you basically get credit to their shop in return, but if you have more super-worn pieces of fabric I think they may take them.

Shelters take socks. So possibly look into women's shelters for the socks that don't have noticeable wear.

😁🖐 Hats! I'm on my 2nd Mussleburgh hat. I've knit more hats & sweaters than anything else. I have knit a fair share of cabin socks as well. However, I now love knitting with weight 1 light fingering wool yarn and plan on writing out my favorite components of sock making that I'll easily memorize so I can just knit socks for relaxation. The best part is having something really useful once it's finished. 🥰

If you want to give away socks, I would recommend looking into homeless shelters, often times people who are unhoused are in heavy need of socks (especially in colder areas). Socks are often on top of most lists at shelters. You could also look into someplace like a nursing/retirement home where older people who have circulation issues could use some cozy socks. Also I do still have my first pair of knit socks....because I knit them like 2 weeks ago lol.
