  • I usually make socks with indie dyed yarns or other higher end products I find in my local yarn store. But did you know you can find sock yarn in local craft stores like Michaels? I tried out a few and shared my experiences in this vlog!

    I throw Kroy in the washer and dryer with my regular laundry. I live dangerously and have teenagers that abuse knits. It holds up well.

    A bit of clarification on Patons Kroy. It **IS** a superwash yarn (check your label) but is it **not** merino wool (it's just....wool)., so it is easy care (machine wash/dry). Also, Kroy is a heavier-weight sock yarn, in that it's 166yds/50g, which would make it 372y/100g. Most typical sock yarns are about 400-440yds in 100g, so it **is** a bit thicker (you're correct in that it's closer to a sport than a true fingering).
    Again, check your labels--there are care instructions on the Kroy label with symbols on the outer label and machine washing instructions on the interior of the label. It's a workhorse, but you'll need 2-3 balls for adult socks. It's **very** similar to Knit Picks Felici, on all aspects.

      Thanks for being thorough! This comment is definitely helpful for other viewers who may want to try this yarn, I appreciate it. The labels are so helpful! I'll try to be more thorough in future videos where I try out other sock yarns because these details make a difference. I hadn't even noticed that it says "wool" and not merino wool, I'm just so used to merino being in sock blends!

    I love this idea! I am not at the point where I can splurge on nice hand dyed stuff, anything I can find at the craft store is what I’m most likely to buy. I’m determined to get comfortable making socks. So far haven’t finished a pair, but I love Patons kroy. Seems like it will be rough but with handling (knitting) and washing I assume it will be softer. I’m pretty sensitive and truly it’s not a bother to my feet
    I like the yardage on the loops and threads sock yarn, haven’t made anything but I’m terrified the sock would just disintegrate after a day.
    Also, Georgia is gorgeous!❤️

    I have never used Perfect Pair, but re: the other two...Kroy is fine in my washer on the warm/cold cycle, to pop the socks back into shape, but I don't throw them in the dryer. Woolike I do not think will hold up well for socks, but I am knitting a sweater with it at 7.5 sts/in, and with a 35" bust and long arms/torso, I am thinking it will take only 3 balls! (I had bought 5.) We will see how that holds up.

    • @crowchetcreations4888
      @crowchetcreations4888  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I don’t think Woolike will be great for socks. But it was so soft and such a good deal for your yardage! I definitely recommend trying Perfect Pair.

    • @crowchetcreations4888
      @crowchetcreations4888  ปีที่แล้ว

      Paton's Kroy definitely feels like more of a sport weight yarn for socks, but it's a great option! I use Chiaogoo needles, but usually the "miniature" sizes.

    • @crowchetcreations4888
      @crowchetcreations4888  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Now that we have used them for a while, I don't think the Wool-like is a good option for socks. Socks need more elasticity and memory to be able to stretch over a foot and then stay on.

    I am about to purchase the magic heel sock pattern but I wanted to know how the sock is holding up with your toddler. Do they stay on her feet? My grandson will be born next month and these socks seem perfect for fast growing babies and toddlers.

    • @crowchetcreations4888
      @crowchetcreations4888  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, I adjusted the numbers for a 40 stitch count sock for my toddler about 10 months ago, and they are only now slipping from her feet. I think she needs to go up to a 48 stitch count. But compared to the regular heeled socks I have made her (short row heels and heel flap/gusset), these socks don't slip more. So I say go for it! If they start to slip you know you need to go up a size. The pattern itself doesn't have child sizes, but it is easy to modify the numbers. I've used the same concepts of this sock pattern to make baby socks as gifts too!
