    Hi there - love watching your channel and listening to your voice! May I just offer an additional tip to anyone using the Opal or Regia “Fair Isle” style commercial yarns; it is really helpful to look at the picture on the ballband of a finished sock (or often online for the right colourway) as these yarns often have similar repeats of different lengths. It’s really important to ensure the two balls are identical and you haven’t just started where the same two colours change. Wind through a couple of repeats and compare to the picture. I’ve knitted what looked like identical socks but then I got a shock and had to rip back and start one from scratch! I have got into the habit of using the ballwinder for the first caking, then I hand-cake to ensure both balls are the same. It’s very mindful, and you learnt to understand your yarn - and find any surprise knots - thank you!

    Hi, Denise. I really loved your tutorial on matching stripes in self-striping-yarn socks. You're terrific, keep it up! Ah, the love of fibres. Am about to start knitting socks for the first time.

  • @CarruthersDruthers

    Did you find the beginning of the yarn? 😃 I do wish all yarn makers would put a "start here" or "pull here" tag on the yarn. I've seen one or two that do, but I mean how many years, decades, centuries has yarn been wound into balls and it's still not evolved to having a starting point? 🧶 Right? LOL

    Do you have a tutorial on how to knit contrasting heels so you don’t interrupt the striping pattern? I know the afterthought heel works for this but can it be done with a standard heel and gusset sock? Thanks, enjoyed the tutorial.

    Very helpful! I just finished my second pair of No Fear Shorty Socks (THANK YOU!) and am ready to try stripes before moving on to a different pattern (One More Step by Denise Desantis of course!) Thank you too for the review of your favorite sock yarns. All of them are so beautiful!

  • @judygrayson7896

    Thanks for this video. Will help in the future. I did my first sock with you and your pattern. I went to my local yarn shop and she had the opal. I did not want to spend much on my first socks also she didn’t have much else in sock yarn one other yarn but didn’t like the color and was $10 more. I wish I would have bought a really good yarn for my first socks because I found this yarn hard to work with for me. It had great stretch width wise but not length wise, so when I dropped a stitch I had a really hard time bringing the stitch back up to my needle. Partly too cause it is a bit ruff in texture and not great stretch it was at times impossible to fix a dropped stitch. I tried to match them but just could not find the matching color. After my first sock was done I tried unwinding till I found a spot I thought would match but was wasting so much of the ball I was getting nervous I would not have enough to do another sock. But to be far I am a new sock knitter so partly my inexperience. I love doing socks so I ordered some better yarn online and going to keep trying. I didn’t have a heard time finding the end but seems like this stuff was already giving you a heard time too. Let me know if you have ever knit with the opal pattern yarn and if you had any luck with it, and if you have not ever used it would love for you to give it a try and do a review on it. Please. I know the Regia Arno and Carlos perfecta yarn is designed to pull the yellow yarn till you get to the main color and you start there and then when you do your next sock you unwind till you find the yellow again and cut when you get to main color. They make it fool proof but have not tried it yet. One Can get it at yarn.com but my next socks are going to be a solid color to make things easier lol. Thanks for all you knowledge Judy

    Not really that helpful to me but I'm still learning. I have a skein of the new Halloween freckled whimsey. It is a 12 stripe repeat. Not 12 colors. I have already finished the 1st sock. I was told to start the 2nd from inside the ball now. I guess I would try and find it by reeling off the center pull until I find it. But I think the striping would be going the other way. Can you help me please?

    How would you go about knitting two perfectly matched self-striping socks but doing two socks at the same time? Also, I'm curious if Opal yarn reverses the pattern direction in the middle of the yarn ball. I've come across some self-striping yarn that does it.

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This tutorial explains exactly how to do that. I hope you find it helpful. As far as I know, Opal does not reverse the pattern in the middle of the yarn ball.

    I really enjoy your teaching style, thank you! So keep knitting in same direction for both socks to get colour repeat in same order, and if I wanted the opposite order I'd wind 2 cakes and knit one sock pulling yarn from inside and other from outside?

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jo-Anne,
      I don’t recommend pulling from the center of a ball/cake. You run the risk of the outer layers collapsing on itself and then you have a tangle. I would just wind the balls in opposite directions. That will put you at opposite ends of the striping yarn sequence and will give you mismatched socks/stripes.

    Thanks for the instruction on this. It appears that you are knitting from the outside instead of a center pull. Is there a reason for this?

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are very welcome!
      I simply do not like a center pull ball. They tend to collapse on themselves after a while and pulling from the outside keeps the ball neater. That's my experience. It's all about personal preference.

    Loved this video. I can hardly wait to watch the rest of your socks instructions. I have one question--when you are knitting toe-up (my favorite) how do you know when you are half-way through the ball, or when to stop one sock and start the next? Weight?

    Thanks to your classes I’ve completed my first sock and am on to number two! It went surprisingly well. One suggestion- this should be class 1A. I was concerned about trying to match them as best as possible, so I watched this before starting the second. I wish I had known how to mark the second skein when I was starting the first sock. I think I’ll be close enough after a couple restarts and am looking forward to completing my first pair soon. Love your course, your teaching method, and feeling you were with me on this journey. Thanks Denise!

    With The Cozy knitter cake, how did you know where you were in the green stripe? Since you didn’t go to a color change.

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure i understand your question. I just rewatched my video where I demonstrated that I measured out the green strip (made a note of the length), knowing that the length would be more than enough for 64 stitches. I then said that I put in a slip knot and started the cast on. I would repeat that process for the second sock.

    • @divinelyengineered
      @divinelyengineered ปีที่แล้ว

      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast to be honest, I was watching this when I was very tired and may not have paid the closest attention! I'm so sorry. I know you measured, but were you at the start of the green stripe? It looked like you just started from the free end of the skein. On the other skeins/cakes you found where the color changed and measured from there.
      Again, so sorry for it maybe not being asked clearly!
      Edit: and now I just realized you said you measured the length of the green stripe 🤦🏼‍♀️ goodness! I need to watch these videos when I'm more awake! Thank you for taking the time to respond to me!

    If I’m going to use a solid for heels and toes, I’ve been knitting a few rows in that color and then start knitting with the self striping yarn.. so your tip really helps for those socks that won’t have contrasting heels and toes.
