    Metal ion release and the condition known as metalosis is not limited to Metal on Metal bearing surfaces. Any exposed metal in vivo will leech metal ions into the surrounding tissues. If the patient is allergic to these ions they will become symptomatic and the implant will fail. If they are not reactive or they don't have an immunological reaction to the implant they might have a long life and not need a revision (read: failure) but the chance and statistics are not captured here in the United States because the FDA does not mandate an artificial joint implant registry - something we REALLY NEED!

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Don. Yes there can be very low level ions in the bloodstream but metal on metal hips are the ones that have caused the problems. Yes a joint registry is important but there are many around the world that provide useful information to help clinical decision making. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did

My doctor said you may sit on the floor occasionally but do not do it regularly, because it is not good for your implant. Is doctor worried about wearing ? I have seen many people using indian toilets after THR. I really confused about restrictions.

    Thank You so much for sharing these videos with us. I had a TKR of my right knee October 25. I’ve been having right hip pain for years but associated it to my back issues (T10-S1 fusion) which radiates more to my right hip and leg than to the left. My doctor took some X-rays of my hips and found that I am “bone on bone” and we are planning a total hip replacement surgery for February if my recovery from my TKR of the right knee continues to go well. Good news is that it looks like I still have a couple of years before we have to address the left side. I found your TH-cam channel before my TKR and learned a lot which I know has contributed to my speedy recovery. I am now watching your hip videos so I can be better prepared for this surgery. Between my amazing surgeon and your videos, I am confident that I will make a full recovery from both surgeries. Thank You so much for sharing your time and knowledge.

    A partial hip replacement following a fracture does not have an acetabular component. The prosthetic ball on the stem goes directly into the natural acetabula. How is this arranged and what is the wear factor, what actually wears? Mine is a double headed ball.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Trilby. Yes this is common if you do not have any pre existing arthritis. It is called a bipolar component. The wear is the socket is usually quite slow and we revise few of them. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing

    I had a ceramic on ceramic with titanium hip replacement in Switzerland and the surgeon said that we were on the 14th floor of the Hospital, he could throw that ceramic out of the window and it would not even be chipped, let alone break. Obviously I took his word for that, as I was not prepared to jump.

    Useful info Thanks. Does the patient get a Med certificate to avoid a hassle at airport screenings? Or do these latest implants not trigger the scanner?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Makinja. So these implants will definitely trigger the scan. There is no certificate that a surgeon can give that will be accepted because as you can imagine, if you were part of a sinister group, you could implant some dangerous device, print up some card that says you have a knee replacement and get through security. We tell our patients to let the officer know you have an artificial joint. If they have doubts or further questions they will put you in the scanner and can see it for themselves. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and for subscribing if you did.

    Hi Doctors i've just had a hip revision due to ceramic liner fracture, now they replaced the ceramic ball with a stainless steel (not CoCr) head and inserted a new ceramic liner, i've been reaffirmed that this is safe. They avoided using polyethylene liner due to the Ceramic debris that might get stuck in the plastic and cause third party wear, what do you guys think, should i be looking for signs of metallosis in the next years ? how safe is stainless steel articulating on a ceramic liner ?

    Hi Doctors, I had my hip replaced 18 months ago. Unfortunately, I’m still having pain in the groin and upper thigh. My surgeon said I’m experiencing “End of Stem Pain” and is suggesting that I have a procedure called Strut Allografting of the Femur. This is a major surgery and was hoping you can tell me more about it. I am an avid golfer, snow skier, hiker and enjoy riding my Harley. Now, I don’t think I can do these. Thank you.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kevin. End of stem pain would explain the thigh pain. It means the normally hollow femur is reacting to the presence of the stem and sometimes this area can become weak or thin requiring intervention. If you are unsure, as this is a big operation, may be worthwhile considering a second opinion. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.

      @@TalkingWithDocs Thank you for getting back to me. Yes, I am getting a second opinion with a surgeon in the San Francisco Bay Area on September 29th. Regarding my second opinion, I will let you know how that goes in a couple weeks. Thanks again.

    This video cracked me up, but was educational as well. I had a right total hip replacement a month ago. I need to have my left hip replaced ASAP. I have avascular necrosis. How long do you reccomend between hip replacements when they both need replaced? Also does avascular necrosis play a role in how you perform the replacement? Love your channel doctors. Thanks!

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Scott. Glad we could provide a little comic relief along with some education. So we usually recommend 3 months between hip replacements. This is a general guideline to simply give you time to get over the first procedure and get your muscles strong again. As for AVN, the approach to the new hip is typically the same. Thanks for watching and good luck with #2!

    Can you lengthen a leg 1& 1/2 inch doing a hip replacement?

      Hi Kathy. Yes that is possible but uncommon. Did you want your leg longer by 1.5 inches? Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.

      Yes I had a hip replacement but my doctor said that could not be done he didn’t give me any reason he just said that he didn’t do that. I dislocated my hip as a young girl and my growth bone stopped as I had surgery so about eight years ago I had a total hip replacement and wanted it done but he said he didn’t do that so I thought it wasn’t possible so because after so many years my hip was in so much pain I had the hip replacement with him.

    What is a typical range of motion after ceramic hip replacement? Thank you.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jennifer. So the type of implant does not typically predict the range of motion. It would be more related to the size of the femoral head implant. Range of motion is also affected by preop range of motion and ability to perform physio after surgery. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.

    Is that example of the average size for the post? Are the sockets pink for girls and blue for boys? 😏

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kat59. Yes average size for the post. And that is very funny about the color. The pink one is ceramic. Every company has a different color but pink for boys and girls - it's 2020! Stay safe. Thanks for watching and for subscribing if you did.

    Why is there an ability to have dislocation of a new hip? Is there a reason that the socket could not lock smaller than the ball and still have ample rotation?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi scott. Very good question. Yes there are implants that lock into one another. But they do result in a reduced range of motion and ultimately they can fail by pulling out if the force is too great. Thanks for watching and good luck.

      Talking With Docs Thanks for the reply, I'm headed for a hip replacement in the future and restrictions are not what I'm looking for. Love the channel.

    Doc's why can't the ball and cup be easily replaced in a hip replacement revision? Makes no sense. The medical community seems way behind the rest of humanity.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Graham. It can be replaced easily however the problem is usually with the remaining bone stock and the muscles and scar tissue. Hip replacements have come a long way. Good question. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.

      @@TalkingWithDocs im 43 and need a left hip. I'm concerned that I will wear through one in 10 years and have to have a high risk surgery later when I'm 50 Plus. Would you proceed or wait 7 years? Also, will it stop my hip pain or just give movement back?
