    I scheduled my hip replacement today. I have watched several videos about "before and after" things to do. You guys are FANTASTIC. I am retired and not very active. I HOPE that lowers the probability of a disjointed hip after my surgery. Thank you so much for your videos.

      the risk of disjointing are probably quite low because you will be in so much pain every time you move you wont want to move!

      @@TalkingWithDocs All their videos are spot on and truthful. I had mine done 4 months ago. Was walking without Walker in 2 weeks. Returned to work after 3 and I drive a semi locally. I was doing my normal mountain bike riding routine within a month. First week was hard. I didnt get any physical therapy. Didnt need it. The physical therapist at the hospital showed me what to do as far as walking stairs. I have stairs in my home so I'd walk stairs several times a day and do leg lifts. The more I'd walk as the days progressed the better my hip would feel. I was completely off pain meds by like day 9 but still take a small dose of meloxicam because my other hip is bad too but not as near as bad as right hip was so am trying to buy some time.

    I had both hips replaced due to years of hip arthritis when I was in my early 60s. Mine are Birmingham-style protheses since I have healthy bones. Six weeks between surgeries. Each took a few hours and after showing I could walk and navigate steps with crutches (for safety) I was on the way home. I was not allowed to drive for a time, and was required to have someone with me for the first 24 hours after surgery. The drugs are really good, no pain. I was given exercises to perform at home. After about a week the crutches were replaced with a cane for a few more weeks. Once I could comfortably walk a certain distance the cane was gone. It has been a life-altering experience. I run half marathons now.

    When I was in the hospital on day 1 during PT there was a lady who had just had a knee replacement who did not have a home plan in place. I felt bad for her. The staff tried to encourage her that they would find a place. I spent 3 months planning and preparing because of the information in your video along with the literature the hospital provided me during my pre op 2 weeks prior to surgery. We all had the added challenge this year of the electric company turning the power off during wind events. i had been home from the hospital 3 days and the power was out for 3 days. I had planned! M new y motto is " plan for the worst, hope for the best". Prepare before your surgery! All business were closed during the outage and again, the information on this site helped me to " shelter in place" and do a bit of PT at home by candle light. Another power outage is scheduled for the next 2 days, so again. I can do this because of these supportive videos. Thanks, you have no idea!!

    Had THR a month ago and I'm still dealing with pain (definitely that different kind of pain though) and I'm not as mobile as I thought I'd be a month later. But, I was down for almost a year before surgery. Literally could not hardly walk, period. Because of my age I had an extremely hard time finding an orthopedic surgeon to do the surgery. My muscles have definitely depleted so I'm going to have a ways to go to get built back up.

      I was also down for a year and going around my apartment in an office chair, sounds like our situations were so similar. My physical therapist showed me how to walk upright taking longer strides and not walking and small fearful steps.I'm 16 days post-op and it's still very tight and sore at the top of my thigh and I'm really sick of ice packs. The exercises help.

      I an scheduled for surgery in 2 days. When told I needed it and the date was set was the worst day of my life so far. I wasstuneduje I had walked into a brick wall. I was not here mentally for several days and y til I read the notes from my surgeon and the 40 page "After Visit Summary" my surgeon gave me I had begun to understand what to expect. Finding your Podcasts on U-tube helped me to understand what I read and the messages on a clinic podcast telling what to expect at my hospital and surgery day was more understandable after I listened to your podcasts. I am nervous but not scared like I was in the beginning. My worst fear is that something will happen to again postpone or cancel my surgery because I had a dental problem come up just 3 weeks before the first surgery date so my surgeon moved it up by 3 days to fit in the dental work 3 weeks before surgery and at my pre-surgeryphysical I had to take very strong antibiotics 4 times a day for a week to clear up a Urine Infection. I was surprised by the showering for 5 days before, nightly and then just before going in on surgery day. And the antibiotic I have to use to not carry an infection in my nasal cavity. So many precautions to be clear of infection and be safe for the surgery. I could have been floored by all the precautions but my 12 step group has helped immensely by giving me again the mental tools to cope with everything I need to do to be ready for the surgery. Sime of these precautions you have not said anything about in your podcasts but have covered many I was scared about so I could cope with the rest. I am still very nervous about the surgery but so much better than the scary fear I has at the first when I was given the first surgery date.

    Flying, I was stuck in Philippines after my partial hip replacement, hard an motorbike accident there. I had 2 pillows made for me, one 5" and one 4" I sat on those in the wheelchair and on the plane ride at 7 weeks, wanted to get back to USA. Dometic flight was 2 hours in Philippines, and then I took international flight and got the seats that lay down, and flew from Manila to Seoul which was 5 hours, and then to USA which was 14 hours. I was careful and used a walker/wheelchair the whole trip

      @@TalkingWithDocs I am still on cruthes after 10 weeks, I saw my US othro 2 weeks ago when I got back to USA, and we are doing agressive PT. He did xray looks like the thing in my femur is too small, and the thing in my hip is too large. I had a partial hip replacement. After a few more weeks if don't get much improvement he will redo my surgery. I can't my right leg, same side as broken hig, or lift it very much. This is what happens when you get stuck in a 3rd world country, it hasn't been fun so far. Also they found a blood clot in my hip when I got back to USA, so I am on meds for that, they think the clot is older and not travel induced.

Got blood clots from knee to upper pelvis had surgery to remove those, and they put a filter near my heart to catch any clots, I did have small clot in my lung. Week after clot surgery I had my total hip replacment redone in the USA. 6 weeks later I am now using 2 canes down from walker/crutches.

    Just had my hip replacement..... 1 month in now. Give yourself plenty of time. Use your pain meds .... maybe invest in a rental or purchased portable toilet to place close to your bed.... used a "strap" to get my leg onto the bed. Eat light. Practice walking every day .... with a cane, crutches, whatever works for you.... make sure that someone is with you when you are new to trying to do your walking ... I'm doing so much better now 1 month in.... and I'm not crying anymore!!!!!

    Very good video and information. 👍I have extreme pain from spinal stenosis in my left leg (for 9 years) and four spinal surgeries that did not stop any leg pain. Discovered my left hip needs replacement, so having that done in a few weeks. The nerve pain makes it feel as if my knee and ankle are broken so I have no idea what sort of pain will be lessened by the hip replacement. Also I despise the opiate pain meds as they give me diarrhea that is worse than pain. but I have never felt any pain relief (just wacky brain function) from a dozen different pain meds including morphine. I can only hope the hip replacement helps so I can walk and reach my feet without as much pain. Even Mayo Clinic would not help me with the spinal stenosis. I have four lumbar vertebrae fused with rods and screws. I've been watching hip replacement surgeries on YT. Great praise for the doctors and staff that perform this surgery. Amazing work and skill.
    Thanks for your video. I was hoping to start a new job in February but sounds like I'm going to have to turn that down because I would need to drive. Darn. 🤕

    Hi Dr. Zalzal, It's been just over 5 months now since my THR. The pain is gone from the ball and socket joint which you replaced which is awesome! I've been doing my exercises 3 times a day for the last 5 months. I was wondering why I'm still feeling tightness just under the incision still? Did you have to sew the 2 ligaments and the 4 rotator muscles back onto the head of the femur and that's why it's still feeling tight?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Doug Hart Hi Doug. Glad to hear you are doing well. The muscles are sewn back together but the main reason you still feel tight is regular post operative recovery. Soft tissues respond to the incision and surgery in a variable way. This will usually soften up over time but can take up to 2 years. Exercise and time is usually the answer. All the best and thanks for watching

    The hip precautions were a nightmare for me, especially having to sleep on my back, which I simply can't do. I kept a pillow between my legs to sleep on my non-operative side and at five weeks or so was able to sleep on my stomach. I was driving at four weeks, in part because I used absolutely no pain meds, not even acetaminophen, and also because my operation was on the left rather than my accelerator/brake side.

    Thanks for providing this useful information. Regarding the common response "you can walk after knee replacement but not run". I don't understand the difference it has been shown the impact force from running is very similar to the for from walking. The force with running is slightly greater but the force is exerted for a shorter time than walking. Hence conclusion was the force of both activities are similar.
    Also I am a barefoot runner which has been shown to inflict less force than shoes.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Craig. This topic is a bit controversial. In general, running does not cause arthritis however the impact of running does accelerate arthritis faster than the lower impact of walking. And yes footwear and orthotics vs barefoot running is another topic that is being investigated further. Here is one abstract that looked at force of walking vs running. Impact Forces of Walking and Running at the Same Intensity.
      Swain DP1, Kelleran KJ, Graves MS, Morrison S.
      Author information
      1
      1Department of Human Movement Sciences, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA; and2School of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA.
      Abstract
      Moderate-intensity walking (horizontal, WH), vigorous-intensity walking (incline, WI), and vigorous-intensity running (horizontal, R) were compared. The hypothesis is that running creates greater loading forces than walking even at the same aerobic intensity. Young adults (10 M and 10 F; age, 22.8 ± 0.5 years) performed 3 exercise trials in a counter-balanced order: walking 5.5 kph at 0% grade (WH); walking 5.5 kph at 11% (WI); and running at 8.0 kph at 0% (R). Oxygen consumption (V[Combining Dot Above]O2), step frequency, peak vertical ground reaction force (VGRF), and vertical force loading rate were recorded during the last 5 minutes of each trial. Results are mean ± SE. Net V[Combining Dot Above]O2 during WH (10.5 ± 0.3 ml·min·kg) was significantly less than WI (26.3 ± 0.3) and R (25.1 ± 0.7 ml·min·kg). Step frequency was significantly greater during R (163 ± 1.5 steps per minute) than both walking conditions (WH, 128 ± 1.0 steps per minute; WI, 126 ± 1.2 steps per minute). Peak VGRF was significantly greater during running (844 ± 47 N) than both walking conditions (WH, 581 ± 27 N; WI, 565 ± 28 N). Force loading rate was significantly greater with R (8,214 ± 26 N·s) than WH (6,497 ± 15 N·s ) and WI (5,699 ± 16 N·s ), with WH > WI. Vigorous-intensity walking produced no greater loading forces than moderate-intensity walking. However, running at a vigorous intensity produced substantially greater loading forces than walking of the same intensity. These findings suggest that vigorous aerobic exercise may be performed without elevated orthopedic stress, depending on the mode prescribed.
      Thanks for watching.

    Two days ago. Feel like I was hit by a truck on the new hip side. Floppy leg, no muscle strength. Hard to raise my knee. However I did the initial same day walking test successfully and went home same day. No opioids. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen only (was given opioids as a backup, with instructions to use only if the non-opioids can’t control the pain). No pain at rest, only discomfort, level 4, when moving. “Sore muscle” discomfort but no pain per se, not even incision pain.

    Thank you Docs. If you would talk about hip revision surgery, how it's different in recovery also you mentioned staples but my doc says they don't do staples only dissolveable stitiches

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lana. So we use dissolveable stitches and staples on top. Revision surgery recovery is very case specific. It will often take longer to recover. Sometimes patients are unable to fully weight bear. It really depends on what has to be revised. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and be safe.

    Hey Doc's, been searching for encouragement for my up coming THR. I am worried about performing my job with full capability. I am a truck driver, sitting in the truck for 4 hrs at times, Climbing p into the truck, then pushing heavy pallets off the trailer.
