Hi Eric. I am NOT an auto technician by any means, but at 75 years old I so enjoy watching your videos! What you do may be boring to some, but I find it to be absolutely fascinating. Thank you for all you do, and all the best to you and yours.
That’s cause he’s comprehensive and descriptive. I’m 45 and been tinkering since my single digits. Eric reminds me of my instructor Charles WhiteHouse. Transparency is fundamental in communicating and understanding.
Bridging the gap between automotive locksmith and automotive diagnostician is a great niche to fill. I hope the shops you do work for recognize the value you'll be providing.
A couple tips as an automotive locksmtih. We run up to 150 calls per week. If you are using any flavor of Autel on a Honda and it asks to verify the date always choose no even if correct. If not you will brick the BCM. It writes to the BCM incorrectly. Autel was not forthcoming about this even though they knew about it. Autel is no longer high up on my list because of this. Honda also has a bulletin out on aftermarket programmers bricking their BCM's. If that car ends up at the dealer the dealer will point the finger at you. This happened to 2 of us before Autel finally admitted it. The best key programmer is going to be Advanced Diagnostics Smart Pro. It doesn't brick Honda's either. It's expensive and paying for tokens suck but we charge accordingly. On a Hyundai/Kia push to start if nothing seems to work disconnect the car battery for 5 minutes. After reconnecting it will program right away. Stay away from cheap aftermarket fobs. We are using mostly OEM and OEM refurbs. $3.99 aftermarkets either won't program or break in 3 months. The biggest issue is some of these damn cars even in mid years have fob changes. Some of the cars can take 3-4 different fobs and you have to carry each one because only 1 will actually work. There isn't any 100% accurate way to tell other than trial and error. Hyundai/Kia are pretty bad in this respect. We have had cars and every piece of info we could find said it took a certain fob but we couldn't get it to program. We tried one for another model and or year and it finally programmed. Fords can be quirky too. If you program one and the car starts but the remote buttons don't work you used the wrong frequency fob even though everything said that was the correct one. Join NASTF and pay for key codes. Lishi's are OK but if your busy in the hot sun trying to figure out cuts while calls are holding just pay for the codes. Some older Mopars you have to pay for pin codes anyway. I hate all these extra expenses but we are so busy we can't spend hours on these cars like a hobby or DIY guy would. We charge on the higher end of the scale and warranty our work. We have fly by nights working out of their trunk with $3.99 fobs and Lishi tools doing them for $100. We have had customers call saying these guys spent 3 days on their car and couldn't program it. We charge $350 and are done in an hour. You get what you pay for. You can get into the $6-700 range for Euro's.
@@johnmwangi6291 UHS has paid classes online and in person. That would be a good place to start. You need at a bare minimum $10,000 in equipment keys and fobs. You also need some advanced auto knowledge and how to take things apart. You could also start at the bottom and take a job as an apprentice with someone willing to train you. I have trained guys with zero experience. I also have guys working for me that just do lockouts. They really aren't interested in taking it further. They could make more money but they are happy just doing lockouts. Some cars you need to know how to take door panels off and on. You need to know how to take outside door handles off to make keys and open some trunks without making keys. Some cars after the alarm goes off it disables the electric trunk release so there are ways to circumvent that. 90% of customers with keys in the trunk tell me about the fairy tale car they own. Their car doesn't have an alarm, their electric button will work after we open it and the rear seats fold down. These people actually believe it and of course we go out there and none of the things they said were correct. lol Some PITA cars need a cluster taken off. ECM's opened on older ones. Kick panels removed to gain access to a connector. There is a lot to this. Some cars are dealer only as well. Everyday is different out here in the mean streets.
@@scotts4125 I got into keys just to streamline my shop repairs I dont go out and look for key work. So far so good. Used a few Lishi already, cut a few keys and also programmed, no significant fob programming yet. Still very low on keys since I wasn't sure what to go with as far as OEM/ Aftermarket. Im looking to do some promaster vans...you ever done any of those? looks like several keys on those and also BCM changes which changes key.
Great info. Any accredited locksmith course or school you can recommend for someone who does not want to be an apprentice for 2 years but could afford 1 year locksmith course + 1 year apprenticeship?? Also, is a locksmith license required to join NASTF? I learned this myself out of passion since the year 2000; the license is the only thing i need now; i have applied for numerous jobs in vain and i have actually had one but it was short lived because the enployer expected me to do all keys lost in a junkyard environment with problematic cars while they trained me 4 days out 7 on adding keys mainly because they did not wanna loose their street customers; meanwhile i was required to make 1000 daily for them and of course i could not reach this goal. Parting ways with them has been the best thing that could ever happen to me because i built myself up on what i lacked by self training at salvage yards; i have acquired several great programmers, knowledge on how to use them, increased inventories & learned new skills by myself including soldering. I advertise myself, schedule appointments, found my own customers accounts & made a lot of people happy who share my number around. I work on all cars including europeans while other locksmiths in my area turn them down. From BMW to BENZ & VAG without forgetting Rovers, I have had to make a second visit but rarely had to fail a job. The main failure i have run accross twice was the Encrypted Cas3++ paired with the bosch DME that only give out a 4 digits ISN. This combination is mostly found in v8 BMW X5 & 6 series. Any locksmith school or class i can take to get my exam before going for 1 year apprenticeship?? Im in DFW TX. Thanks 🙏
Wow Eric what a big step you have taken. Been following you for a long time. Way back when you had your own shop. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Hope your business continues to thrive 👍. Artie

It’s amazing that you ended up going with programming. I really thought about it as well, get the locksmith part as well. I got scared with really spending the money for the scanners and the pass thru device without those I cannot do anything. This did help me rethink and maybe I can move forward

I’m just starting off doing key programming branching off on my own starting off as side work but eventually I’m going to leave the dealership hopefully things go well
Like how you professionally explain everything, I have a 2020 Ford Escape 1.5L with no communication and the AC doesn't, work can you give me some hints if you can, I would appreciate it.
I just want to make keys as an add on service for my business. I seen your videos and didn’t know it can be that complicated. Removing bcm, soldering circuits, reprogramming and more. I thought it was a duplicate procedure if anything
I needed this so badly. I have the notorious Nissan Code and I had a transmission pressure sensor code. I replaced my valve body but I was trying to figure out how to reset the TCM without going to a dealer. I have the Lauch tool (not w/the immo) and now I need to check for that write option. I think I have it but I was scared to brick the car.
I’m a mobile mechanic and shop owner myself. I currently use the snap on remote assisted programmer to do all my programming, it’s a computer/j2534/battery maintainer all in one. But been thinking of getting rid of it because it’s a paid and by appointment service and it gets expensive. $150 per module program! Need to get my hands on a j box. How come you used both the snap on and then the autel j box after? Was it because one j box can do what the other can’t?
New subscriber here...I also do mobile work and I also added keys to my outfit simply because I didn't want to deal with having to rely on someone to come out....sometimes they do not show and im stuck with a vehicle for an extra day or two because of that. I ended up with an autel im608 and a Gymkhana 994 key machine and hopefully looking to add more as I need. I joined to possibly get some more knowledge on tooling or procedures to program pcm and other modules. I understand some makes are laptop based and others just need a passthru...need to get some help on how to stream line the process to make it as efficient as possible. Im also in the market for a new scanner. Will be getting rid of my snap on ZEUS and looking for something to replace that and also looking to get a laptop to do multiple manufacture coding/flashing work.... any recommendations would be great.
Hi Eric. I have been driving a used 2015 x-trail for 2 months now, only just found out it has a P17f0 because I took it to get keys programmed and the guy wanted to do a diagnostic check before he touched anything for liability reasons, seller admitted the transmission was replaced but the TCM was not programmed after. Said car has been sitting unused until I bought it. Could I have already damaged the CVT transmission driving with incorrect characteristic data? I can't feel any bad shifting or acceleration.
A bit off topic, hoping you can help me: need to program Ranger BCM, nobody does it where I live and want to learn and do it myself. What equipment I’d need to purchase/software and where to find 5r guideline for this procedure? 😢 Thank you very much in advance.
I really appreciate what you’re doing. I’m just getting started with key programming I have the im508 and have program a few key fobs. I’m in the process of buying a key cutting machine any recommendations? Also I need to learn the Lishi and how to read a code Any help is appreciated thank you so much
Is a “rumble strip vibration” on a 2017 Sentra sr an indication of a bad transmission? No oil leaks. 66K miles. Dealer found no issues with brand new tires, no bearing issues.
Great videos I’m looking for a scanner for OBD1 that actually reads the values not just the codes. Like for the TPS, IAC, O2, MAP, MAT, etc. I work on old GM TBI a lot and also OBD2 I’ve found that Topdon max does both , any help thanks😊😊
Hello, your video is very interesting. I wanted to ask you how you can download the software that makes it communicate via J2534 in the case of the Nissan. Thank you
Thanks so much im getting ready to do a cvt job and i have the sticker and you gave me the exact information i was looking for but do you think i my otofix d1 should be able to perform the same function or have they still not fixed it ?
WoW Eric! I was reading some of the comments you impress me.. I been a Mechanic for over sixty years I am seventy two years old an i am teaching myself locksmith the one thing that is holding me back is programming. can you help with my education by sending me in the right direction.
i'm looking to buy this xtool scanner. Anytime I do a nissan CVT i always have to call my local guy w/ consult to load the software. Can you enter the serial number manually incase the QR doesn't scan?
Hi erick i have a case study on a cadillac xt4 2019. Changed the battery due to crank and no start on a road trip, started and code p0129f showed up. Didn't turned off the car from MT to TX. Changed the fuel pump engine started and error code went away. No voila !!! Car is in the same condition cranks but no start after a battery and a fuel pump change. I need your help brother

Is a “rumble strip vibration” on a 2017 Sentra sr an indication of a bad transmission? No oil leaks. 66K miles. Dealer found no issues with brand new tires, no bearing issues.
Thanks for your information, very useful! Love you.
