Eternal Void Jesus dude you don’t get it... nobodies claiming every instance was abusive. It’s just that none of that abuse is experienced by white people. Why do you think for generations in pop culture, it has been referenced in comedy, art, movies, music, etc. if several generations of people say it then it’s gotta have some weight. We’re not saying only Black Lives Matter, we’re saying just that they do. The fact that you came to watch a video about an anti institutional racism song, yet get defensive like that. I've always said that. Most people didn't really pay attention to the lyrics of 'Chocolate Rain.' They only laughed at the video. Tay Zonday was on some next shit, with this classic song. The brother was most definitely "woke." While most people were sleeping on the knowledge he was kicking in Chocolate Rain. Maybe they'll see it one day. 💯
There's a phenomenon I've observed, and I'm sure I'm far from the only one to notice, where the average person hearing a song listens to hooks and choruses (which are often but not always the same thing) but verses don't register at all. Take "It Wasn't Me" by Shaggy feat. Rik Rok, for example. A lot of people don't even know Rik Rok's character in the song decides to apologize to his girlfriend and calls Shaggy's character out on his advice being complete nonsense at the end, because all they remember is "it wasn't me" and they don't even pick up on the key detail that Shaggy is playing the idiot friend who gives terrible advice. Then of course there's "I'll be watching you", "You're beautiful" and who knows how many other songs about creeps that are widely misunderstood as love songs. English is my second language, but I knew what Chocolate Rain was about the first time I heard it and thought it was disturbing how people were treating it like a joke and apparently not even getting the very straight forward message of it. I have since learned that those of us who pay attention to lyrics are the weird ones.

He could be one of the Jacksons
I remember when Coca Cola used that song to advertise their “Cherry chocolate” pop man me and my best friends died!!! That commercial came on like a world premiere for a Beyoncé video! 😭... This guy is awesome!
"Tay Zonday’s 'Chocolate Rain' Was More Woke Than We Realized"
According to whom? The lyrics from the very beginning are pretty transparently about race relations and its lack of equality.

Gerry Alga I was shown this as a kid by a friend so that’s how I figured out it existed, we used to joke on it so hard because we didn’t know what it was actually about and the fact that it kept saying “chocolate rain”

He sold out big time for that Dr. Pepper bag. All of a sudden, that song wasn't so political. LOL
Gene Williams in his defense he most likely signed the deal not knowing they wouldn't like any of the original pieces he wrote. By then he probably owed them a commercial and they pitched that he did Chocolate Rain
A man needs to eat
Sold out, by sold out you mean achieved his goal of making money from his craft? What did he sell out from?
Panama Jack good point, O just see it as him trying to to be become relevant for another 15 minutes.
"The achievement my heart has always longed for is being a regular guy"
Tay Zonday is the main character
We were all too busy laughing and didn't catch the message. We definitely fumbled the ball on this one as a generation 🤯
