Everything gone! I had to remove all solar 5/5

  • So, this took me a lot longer than I expected, almost the whole day. I had to remove the old solar system before the new one comes in. Including all cable and rail system. I also found a burn mark on one of the Canadian Solar panels. Not good! We will keep this panel and see if we can make some testing with it...
    So, one more sleep until Christmas. Aeh, almost...

    Andy, do you think to use power optimizers with solar panels? when I see the videos I notice some of the panels have shadows over them... this will good chance to create hot spots issue. Do you planned to replace solar panels or use same panels from previous installation? It's better if you can use half-cut cells panel, it has good resistance to hot spot issue (bcz panel will contain 6 strings instead of 2)

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia

    Our journeys have been similar. Battery build and Victron setups and I’ve been running second hand panels for around 2 years - along with some brand new panels - they out perform second hand older panels by a long way - and when roof space is at a premium it’s false e coming to use second hand. It will be interesting to see a sparky work on your system - getting it somewhere near compliant is something I’ve wanted to do but it’s next to impossible to find one that will work on the systems without paying cash :-)

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I'm glad I found the sparky in this area here who has some knowledge of this battery stuff. I have to pay him, true but it is worth it to keep it all safe and compliant. He will do more work for me in the future.

    Is it better to have PVC conduits for the solar wires?

  • @BobHannent
    @BobHannent ปีที่แล้ว +1

    not sure I would have pulled out all the cable, they might want to use them as draw strings if they're using the existing ducting. But I suppose if they asked for it all stripped back. Are you doing anything about the old screw holes?

    • @TheRonskiman
      @TheRonskiman ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought about that, then remembered he used existing bolt holes in most cases.

    • @jmaus2k
      @jmaus2k ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Roof junctions should be Solodeck boxes and inside should be metal conduit for all dc wires. Combiners also are usually on roof so only 1 set of main cables runs down. Lets see what they will so. I doubt any of the old stuff could be used.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The sparky will use their own glands was my understanding, so not sure if they will use any of the existing conduits. And as they are short runs only, I believe, they have a cable feeder to get them back in easily...

    Hi Andy. How many years where these panels in use. This cracks and the hotspot are don't looking good! I'm a little bit afraid if this happens to my panels. 🙈 I've got brand new trina modules and i hope this will not happens to me till the next 15 years! 🙈

      I have had 4 different brand of panels one the roof. So far only the Canadian Solar have shown these cracks and hotspot. They are used panels I picked up 2-3 years ago and are probably 8-10 years old. Could have been a bad batch as Canadian Solar is usually prety good. But I had one on my house as well with such a hotspot (Renesola)). All others are fine.

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia ok, you took a little bit scare off me! Now I think I am fine for the next 10 till 15 years with my panels. But it is noticed, that I do have a look on the panels in 10-12 years, just for maintenance!
      Thanks for your videos and answers!

    So how much did you pay per kWh that you harvested from those panels+installation? That would be interesting numbers.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How do you calculate this. Very very hard to tell. All the data is in my VRM though, so 3.5MWh since I installed the logger, a few hundreds of $$$ for the panels, labour, other equipment...?

    • @schudi5755
      @schudi5755 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia Yes. It would take a lot time to list all the values that went into the system. I'm in process of installing solar on my boat and bought a lot of marine grade cables for all the electric - and I would not start to write separate lists for solar, water maker etc - understand that. But from your experience? Some rough numbers? Just because in the end it would be nice if all the doing even makes scene ;)

      @OffGridGarageAustralia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would still use used panels. I'll do some testing with the faulty panel and see if this would be visible with the IR camera. It was a bit scary to see all these cracks and the hotspot. It is also just this one batch of Canadian Solar panels. All the other 3 brands I had don't show any damage, cracks or hot spots...

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia Dont worry,I have 8 second hand panels on my back shed with some batteries. But your system puts it to shame!!! Couldn't believe seeing sunshine threw the panels, I thought they would be in great shape till they stopped producing power. Must have some extra strong sunshine up there. disconnecting strings by removing fuses, under load, is not good idea.

    • @kuhrd
      @kuhrd ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These fuse holders are made for that specific purpose since they are generally found in commercial combiner boxes. That is why the entire fuse swings so far out that it eliminates the problem of quenching a DC arc because the distance is so large and the disconnect happens so quickly. You are only talking about 80VDC and 8-9 amps under load since he has every string separated.

    • @evil17
      @evil17 ปีที่แล้ว

      This maybe correct, however I have had problems trying to disconnect with this fuse type, not wanting to release properly for some reason, has anyone else had this problem?

    • @glottis512
      @glottis512 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kuhrd In datasheet of many of this fuse holders is: "cannot be used for switching under load". And yes, 80VDC could be safe. Especially if panels are in shade. But general people are watching. Someone could been do the same with 400V strings. Right way is: Disable charging on mppt and then i can get the fuses off. Or Switch of proper DC breaker and then the fuses.

  • @BeastMovies
    @BeastMovies ปีที่แล้ว

    So for low voltage and low amperage strings they burnt really well. My inverter can take 500v VOC, that's a scary amount of volts. I've bought some MC inline fuses for the summer. All my panels are ground mounts, I refused to have then on the house. For cleaning etc. Once they catch fire how will you put them out on a sunny day on a roof. DC power is so dangerous as you can't let go until you're dead. 240v AC gives you a kick and you just shake that off. Also, this kinda takes the fun out of DIY Solar if you get someone else to do it.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well your comment is a bit contradicting. You say Dc power is so dangerous and then want more DIY work with that. I think I explained the background of getting them installed in previous videos.
