    I have now prepared as much as possible for the new upgrade and need to be patient and... wait.
    Victron has also sent me two new MPPTs to replace the faulty ones. Does anyone know how to keep the history data in the VRM of the old controllers and point them to the new ones?
    We also have a quick first look at the new Seplos BMS 10E with Bluetooth. That is exciting!

    Andy my friend, you should be putting bare wire in those solar charge controller terminations. You are reducing the contact surface using ferrules in a terminal that is designed to compress finely stranded wire. The compression spreads the wire and makes contact on all sides of the wire.

    • @taulli1
      @taulli1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Noooo! Damn your infernal logic. I love ferrules too.

    • @taulli1

      Can you test this while you wait for panels Andy?

    • @SabretoothBarnacle
      @SabretoothBarnacle ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was about to write something similar. The ridged nature of the clamp plus ridges on the ferrules could easily reduce the effective contact area.
      By using bare wire you are increasing contact area👍🏻

      That's really useful to know, will be the same on the MCB's. So I doubt I'll need my crimper I ordered yesterday, but at least I've not ordered the ferrules.

    Andy Will you try this experiment on your Charge Controllers..
    Take a piece of the wire you will be using to connect to the controller. Place a ferrel on the wire BUT DO NOT CRIMP.. Put the wire with the ferrel into the controller connector and tork the screw to spec. Go do something else for a half hour and and hour. Rotork the screw once again. I think you will find the screw moves about 1/8 turn.. If more than 1/8 then wait some more. Remove the wire/farel. Check out the contact areas. This should show good contact connection. And no fraid wires.
    Copper wire is soft. It will move from areas of high pressure to low pressure.. I find that if I go back and retort connection a month later will make for a good long working connection for life.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can certainly do this test with the old controllers. Interesting. How does the copper move if it is stuck in a ferrule though?

    • @johnlorang5313
      @johnlorang5313 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia The wire move to an area of lower pressure.. I have seen this a number if time in my 50 years of working in electronics.

    • @johnlorang5313
      @johnlorang5313 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Using the farrules in the connector clamp is like using your hydraulic crimper.
      That put tons of pressure on the lug and the wires pressing down to remove all the air between the wires. The clamp on the charger controllers not so much. The wires will move from high to low pressure over time the temperature. So retorting the screw is necessary. If the screw doesn't move while retorking you should be good. The use of ferrules in the controller clamps with keep the wires from fraying, I think this is the best solution for Victron objection on using ferrules.

    Thanks for the video, Andy. Sorry to see your solar contractor let you down. I was in charge of an $ 18,000,000 refinery upgrade to electronic instrumentation. I always look at the packaging some electronic boards arrive in. They should all be wrapped in anti-static material. Some of the boards came in regular plastic, which caused failures several months after the operation. They cost about $ 8000 each! The storeman ordered wrapping for the boards and bought cheaper plastic bags! All our technicians wore anti-static straps during installation to prevent problems.

    The best thing about DIY is no waiting.
    The Issue with the solar rebate is you have to get someone who has the appropriate acreditation to claim the rebate. Which can be substantial depending on state.
    I myself go and buy panels from a local distributer who has panels left over that are probaly around 20 watts less than the latest panels. :-)
    I paid around $80 each for brand new 370 w jinko panels.
    I paid full price for a sonnen battery. Now the govt are doing subsidies. It still cost me over 20k for 5k5 panels and 8 kwh battery with the solar rebate. Granted they where panels that only reduce 10% over 25 years so that covers my retirement. 🙂
    But then what does the govt do reduce feed in tarrif to 5c per kwh.
    So I have an extra battery bank 3.3kwh (soon to be 6.6kwh usable) on a seperate circuit charged from my jinko panels that discharges when required and does not feed back to the grid. The sonnen I have can only output 2k5 as a load. So boosting it with my other gti I can pull 3.9 kwh before pulling from the grid. We cook using induction so its pretty effecient and super fast to heat up stuff.
    NB my sonnen has broken twice in 3 years. 1st time it just stopped charging. second time after they replaced the board and module they bricked the module with a remote update after a week or so.
    Andy
    I have done the calculations for replacing all the petrol used by cars with electricty from the grid.
    Go do the maths. I calculated around 70+ wind farms need to be added to provide the capacity to charge vehicles.
    With that comes the cost of upgrading all the infrastructure that has been neglected because proffit is king.
    So we the people who are actually assiting by giving them a boost are being penalised because the grid is basically stuffed.
    Rant over.
    Can't wait to see the new panels when they arrive on the roof and the big switch on. :-)
    Off Grid house next Andy, you know you want it . :-)

I mean, your welding cable is super flexible with many many very thin strands. I guess, this is not standard, when Victron speaks about "flexible cable". My flexible cables are much more stiffer, because they don't have so many strands. Greetings from Germany ;-)

    Andreas, this board is the V16 - look at it at 14:25 where you can clearly read what they also mentioned in their communication documents about the differences and how to identify the boards. Bluetooth has been anounced to me as DISPLAY only , so you need to buy the full blown BMS to get the option of bluetooth, not every Seplos BMS will have BT on board as they had told me.
    Read the line above the LED EMU V1101 and then PCBA-V16
    Not the 10 whatever - at least the official productname had mentioned V16 for the new version .
    I hope they have fixed the balancing for the older BMS too as the channel meine energiewende has mentioned in his last video about the seplos BMS and talked about improvements over your preivous versions. But I am still waiting for that particular next video where he wanted to check the SEPLOS BMS.
    Not sure how this could happen that there are so many versions and not sure if they really get in touch with all the customers for their firmware updates.

    I’d like to know the details about the battery. Specifically, what happens to the BMS if the battery is low or dead. Will it protect the battery and save the settings??

      I have all these videos here on my channel/ I tested all this in full detail and showed what happens to the batteries, BMS and charge controllers.
      For example these two (but there are more about this topic):
      Low voltage disconnect with three banks in parallel: th-cam.com/video/5Nv3Blz2knM/w-d-xo.html
      Full charge video with three different BMSes:

    Need help. I'm below noob here. Could you do one on the non-inverting summing amplifier circuit? (voltage adder circuit) I want to take 3 cell phone power banks and add their voltages (5v + 5v + 5v = 15v) then output the resulting 15v to a power inverter. I'm surprised this circuit isn't more popular. Off-grid solar power from multiple voltages of panels. Etc.? There's a rare Fincore one on eBay but I don't see any output on it. Any help much appreciated. Schematics look like gibberish to me but I've always wanted to learn electronics!

      @OffGridGarageAustralia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A phone power bank delivers what, 3A max. 15V x 3A = 45W. What do you want to do with 15V and 45W?
      Solar panels are connected either parallel or series. I made a video here: th-cam.com/video/GFjL0-r6LbY/w-d-xo.html

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia I am forced to be off grid. My aunt passed away and we inherited her mobile home. Because we let the electricity stay off so long, though, we have to rewire most of the residence including the breaker box in order to still live here and have power turned on or the electric company will not turn on power. They require inspection and I know it will not pass. Rewiring everything is not attainable at this time because of the cost. Therefore I am forced to live here without electricity. The power Banks will run strings of LED lights or run our internet box. (12v 3a. Or 12v 1.5a) Though I will watch your video because I love your work, solar panels are very expensive and a lot of people will probably have some of the smaller ones and mix them with larger ones due to cost. This circuit would be excellent for those people. Solar charge controllers would handle the larger voltage nicely and bring it down to extra amps for a better overall power supply using those tiny solar panels in addition to the larger ones. I am saving for a couple Eve batteries to hopefully run a boost converter for longer term internet and lights.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@todamnbad Victron knew about the problem and they just replaced the two controllers. The issue only occurs under certain circumstances and is quite rare. Only if connected to 48V batteries and if there is a certain constellation of solar voltage for a while it can trigger that problem. It stops charging, restarts itself after around 20min and works fine afterwards again.

      I would also say a connection problem. What cables do you use? Victron specifically advises which cables are suitable and which aren't. Have a look in the manual of the MPPT.

    Was ist bloss los mit dem Elektriker Berufsstand? Genau das selbe beschissene Verhalten erlebe ich seit Monaten von Elektrikern hier in der Schweiz. Tauchen einfach nicht auf obwohl angekündigt und melden sich gar nicht, keine Entschuldigung, nichts. Seit mehreren Wochen habe ich 3 Elektriker darum gebeten vorbeizukommen um meine Victron 3 Phasenanlage mit dem Haus korrekt zu verdrahten. Ich könnte es selber, möchte aber das es ein offizieller Elektriker macht. Aber wenn das so weitergeht und die sich einfach nicht mehr melden, werde ich es wohl selber machen. Hab schon gewitzelt das es wohl schneller geht wenn ich einen Abendkurs besuche und mich selber zum Elektriker weiterbilde. Vermutlich habe ich den Berufsabschluss gemacht bevor sich ein Elektriker jemals gemeldet hat. Da ich auch noch ein halbes Dutzend an Aufträgen für unsere Gemeinde (Notstromanschlüsse für Wasserreservoire etc.) zu vergeben habe hat die auch nicht gross interessiert. Ich bin auf dem Bau gross geworden da mein Vater eine Baufirma hatte aber sowas wie bei den Elektrikern habe ich noch nie erlebt bis jetzt. Geht gar nicht....

      Bei Reichtum leidet die Kundenfreundlichkeit als erstes. Die haben einfach ewig viel zu tun und verdienen sich momentan dumm und dämlich. Andererseits verständlich, denn die arbeiten wie im Computer nach dem FiFo-Prinzip. Und Solar aufm Dach ist halt sehr Wetterabhängig. Also wird einer fertig gemacht und dann der nächste....
      Ich bau mir nächstes Jahr 2x 25kW aufs Dach, weil 1. die Umsatzsteuer bei uns darauf wegfällt und 2. die Einspeisevergütung so interessant ist, daß es sich mehr als rentiert ;-). Das mach ich mit meiner Familie ohne Dachdecker oder Elektriker. Nur für die Abnahme und Anschluß ans Grid für die Einspeisung brauch ich die Typen.
