Just on a side quest I guess for a few years.

My first thought about his growls on here are that they sound like his vocals on The fathomless Mastery by bloodbath. My favorite style of his right after the gost reveries stuff. He sounds so evil with more of his speaking voice mixed into his technique.

Yeah. I was watching an interview with him and he talked about proving to himself and everyone else he could still do it. He wasn't sure if the direction was the right one until he tried. But once he did, he got super psyched about how it was turning out. In that sense I think he's rediscovered his joy for creating heavy vocals and performaning them.
I think because the concept and music demanded it of him, so it felt justified artistically rather than forced. So you end up with a very good performance because the heart is in it. I agree with your take and I think he sounds fantastic on it. Also he's sounded pretty awesome on more recent live performances.
From the sounds of things Martin was getting the itch to go heavy again as well. So I guess it's plausible to presume the other members of the band were well and truly up for turning up the heat again after a good creative break from it.
I think that's helped their longevity. Writing music you want to write and perform rather than simply fulfilling the contract from the label to do that thing you did before again.

Mikael's live harsh vocals got pretty weak and unenthusiastic during the Heritage/Communion era, but they have been improving again in the last few years. The concert setlists are also progressively leaning on old prog-death classics. Then, in a 2022 concert, I heard him actually insert a growl in Moon Above, Sun Below (a mellow Pale Communion song). So yeah, it's pretty obvious he rediscovered his love for growls, I'm not even surprised at this point. The song is probably representative of the album.

@@StunDamage i still think he Had some vocal Problems already in 2008. It got worse in 2011. The live Album at Bloodstock he did with Bloodbath was really interesting because heute tried to be very brutal on that one but only His high screams we're good. He recovered niw of course. We all can Hear It.

@@GianlucaTortora-m2h Yeah, his vocal problems came a few years before Heritage. You cold already hear his harshes change in the Royal Albert Hall Live (2010?) Recovery aside, I think he also found a healthier way to growl, like a different technique? When you watch him growl now, he looks very relaxed, no jaw tension at all.
