When I first heard it I was shook. The chorus on it is straight out of a Cannibal Corpse song, which I would not expect from Opeth. Makes you realise just how different they actually are from traditional death metal, even in their early albums.

You can't expect her to fall in love with this album on first listen, it took me several listens to realize just how amazing it is. The Moor rules, chock full of awesome riffs. Love the acoustic section of Godhead's Lament. Benighted is a master class of finger picking acoustic epicness. She absolutely underrated Moonlapse Vertigo, those opening riffs are majestic, such stellar musicianship. The outro riff and lyrics are some of my all time favorite Opeth which is really saying something. Face of Melinda, especially the heavy riff, so damn good and the final line "My promise is made but my heart is thine"...I love that! My least favorite track is Serenity Painted Death but it still has great moments. White Cluster is so underrated, I think it F*cking rules! Mikael's clean vocals on this track hit me in the feels. Love when he sings "The noose is tied, murmur through the crowd. Plunging into anywhere but here." Music really doesn't get any better than Still Life in my opinion.

I think this is Opeth's best album. It still has some of the raw aggression of it's predecessor My Arms Your Hearse, but also has a polish that became more apparent on Blackwater Park. There is a wide variety of moods and musical styles on this album. Such an epic opening song in The Moor, so heavy, but the mood changes that morph into different music styles is sublime. Godhead's Lament is an emotion ladened song that is so bitter sweet and so satisfying. The other track to savour which is my favourite Opeth song is Moonlapse Vertigo. Such swells of emotion and feelings of loss that we have come to well associate with Opeth, the opening instrumental part of the song is a monument to a longing of sorrow and loss.
Insomnium was also mentioned in a previous comment and I would highly recommend them as another band that evokes the same sort of emotions that Opeth does, however, I would suggest you to do a reaction to Since the Day it All Came Down.

Opeth during the time frame of 1998-2001 were at their pinnacle imo. My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life and Blackwater Park are unmatched. I haven't been into much of what they did since then, but at that time they were like nothing else and nobody else. Mikael is such a legend.

I think the cool part about opeth is that every fan has a different favorite song and a different favorite album, you got the newbies who like burden, the progheads who like the new stuff, the old school death metalheads who like their early stuff, the solo lovers who love their album sorceress. Mikael himself said that they never write any album the same as before, if an album was successful and made good bank, they would do smth entirely different because they don't want to be mainstream and predictable, I personally love every album they've put out and I think you can't be told what to like and dislike, it's like a dinner table full of exotic dishes, different strokes for different folks type thing.

First off, I have to say that I really appreciate how you handled the deep dive on this album, going all-in and looking at the lyrics and the whole album song-by-song. While this isn't my favorite of Opeth's albums, it had a massive appeal to me as an angry older teen in late highschool. The melodrama of the vengeful protagonist and his scorned-returned-again love story really struck a chord with me, and I think the concept is really cool as far as narratives in music go! The Moor is definitely one of my favorite Opeth songs, and for awhile in 12th grade, Moonlapse Vertigo was the only thing I would listen to XD
As a bit of a personal note, it is my GOOFY headcanon that this album's protagonist is actually a werewolf, and this is the reason why he was rejected from the village, even at birth, and why his blood is described as "tainted". Furthermore, the image of the moon is a repeated motif in both the lyrics and the album artwork, and he is able to kill this entire village/town of people in a rage that "came with the moon," so... put two and two together haha. Whilst I'm mostly joking, I do love this damn album!
Once again, I loved your reaction, and will be sure to check out the rest of your channel!

    • @abesayy
      @abesayy ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's a pretty interesting theory, it could be left open for interpretation by Mikael as both human and werewolf, that would explain the meaning of 'moonlapse vertigo' meaning sleeping during the day. But then again it could still be human I guess, you don't wanna be out in broad daylight when you're trying to hide from a murderous bunch.

I love how much they grew on this album and all the bits and pieces throughout the album that remind me of Blackwater Park. You really hear those ideas that will go on to become some of their signature sounds. I also forgot just how great White Cluster is and how much it sounds like BP in several sections. The very end(not the bit at the very very end, the section that "ends" the song) especially really feels like it's going into the next album, just that sound and melancholy feel is brought right back on The Leper Afinity.

This album Mikael claimed to have no clue still on how to write music properly with sheet music. So He improvised noting the riffs and notes he wanted down in the way he understood. and they sort of improvised in the studio when they all got together. I think that's why this sounds so different when compared to the albums before and after since before this they would generally write together.

I've always wondered why exactly they went with the title of Still Life as well. All I knew was it referred to a style of artwork from a long time ago that usually depicts things like food or other everyday things like just a table with flowers in a vase. That's basically what it means now that I look into but I found this while searching for the reason why they might have used it and combined with this story this kind of makes sense:
"Still life includes all kinds of man-made or natural objects, cut flowers, fruit, vegetables, fish, game, wine and so on. Still life can be a celebration of material pleasures such as food and wine, _or often a warning of the ephemerality of these pleasures and of the brevity of human life_ "

I thought about your channel just the other day, once again wondering if you had ever gotten back to Opeth after that amazing reaction to hearing them for the first time. You sure have gone through a lot of bands that I don't know since then. It makes me wonder what your feelings about metal are at this point. You seem to enjoy the softer side of Opeth, so far...and while that's perfectly fine, I get the feeling you're still at a point where you can't fully appreciate the heavier parts. Of course, this was your first listen so it will take time to digest these tracks.
And I will say that even though I'm kind of shrugging at some of your feelings, I do understand what you're talking about with some things. That "typical" metal sound in the first half of Serenity Painted Death is pretty unique among Opeth's work, and there are some guitar parts in this album that can be hard to pick out in the mix. Sometimes I find myself wishing Opeth had a more full "wall of sound" effect in some of their songs.
All that said, Opeth has so much more to offer. You could check out Damnation for all mellow stuff, you could do any of the other big albums from this era, or you might even be interested in their last 4 albums, when they went for a prog rock sound instead of prog metal.

So glad you continued the Opeth journey. All their albums are amazing but Blackwater Park always strikes a nerve whichever it may be
I think either Ghost Reveries or Watershed should be your next Opeth discoveries. They are considered among the greatest albums for good reason

I also like Blackwater Park more. I just think that Opeth is one of those bands that you have to be "in the mood" to listen to, and definitely, listen to a whole album rather than just a song, to feel it for real.
If you want a great concept album to listen and react too, I would recommend Iron Maiden's "Seventh Son of A Seventh Son".

You are a great listener! For that guitar solo you are longing for, listen to “hours of wealth” from the ghost reveries album… talk about a mood, that is it! The solo spans the last minute and a half of the song and has brought me to tears more than once 😢

They had an album called DAMNATION and all of the tracks are clean guitars, bass, drums and vocal melodies only. No heavy songs from the beginning to the end. I think you should make a reaction for it because that's the only clean and acoustic-y Opeth album that the band made.

1:30:37 - 1:31:19 That part I've always thought would be better as an acoustic mellow section, without drums, like a sort of interlude. Just imagine strumming or picking those chords gently and letting them ring, and then you could build up to the punchy riff at the end and it would sound so much heavier in contrast.
