  • Recipe here: www.joyofbaking... Stephanie Jaworski of Joyofbaking.com demonstrates how to make Welsh Cakes. Welsh Cakes are very similar to a scone, only instead of baking them in the oven they are cooked on a griddle. Welsh Cakes have a lovely golden brown outer crust, yet inside they are wonderfully soft.

    Lovely, my gran uses to put a bit of nutmeg in too. You can also leave out the mixed peel and spices and when cooked slice in half and spread strawberry jam in between to make jam splits.

    Welsh cakes are the best! better if made all by hand with love on a bake stone like my grandmother made. Where im from many years ago the wives and mothers used to make them for the coal miners for their lunch boxes. thats te history of welsh cakes

    I just made these along with lemon & mixed berry curd.
    OMG, they are out of this world. They are over the top delicious.
    I did turn my griddle down to 300. 350 w/ butter was too high. I did 300 with no butter. I’m at a high altitude, so that could cause some issues.
    This was such an easy recipe, and the results are 5 star.
    I can see these being used for breakfast, a coffee break, or even dressed up as a dessert.
    These are superb.

    • @pedrapioan4201
      @pedrapioan4201 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Traditionally cooked on a bakestone called in Welsh: maen or planc, Hence the name "Picau Maen" I guess a direct translation from Cymraig would be " Stone Cakes" Sometimes they will be called "Picau ar y Maen". Cymraig (Welsh) being a very descriptive language, a direct translation into English would be "Cakes on the stone" A bakestone was a portable flat stone placed on the fire to cook cakes of various kinds. It was usually oval and of slate, plenty of that in Cymru / Wales ! The slate would have been approx 1.5 inches thick. Although stone became replaced with cast iron plate in the 19th century, its name remained unchanged.

      JCEC Vlogs You don't have to, it's really only to help bring the mixture together. You might find an egg will do that enough, so no need for milk. But if it doesn't, don't use another egg as you'll over-do it, the mixture should be quite short and not a wet dough. If you need a bit more moisture and don't want to or can't use milk...just using water is fine 👍

    Im born and bred in Wales and i loveeee Welsh Cakes! A great way of adding a twist to Welsh Cakes is adding chocolate chips instead of dried fruit! They go down well with Kids, especially on St Davids Day!
