When I was a little boy in Wales, my dad brought home a piece of steel plate (an off cut from the side of a ship from the dockyard at Pembroke Dock), about 3/8' thick (10mm) which he had cut to shape with an oxy-acetylene torch. Mum used to make Welsh cakes on it, heated over a gas stove. In my part of Wales it was called a 'plank'. I guess because it was so thick and heavy, the temperature remained fairly constant so the cakes were always perfect.

Bob Bailey what a beautiful memory, do you still have the steel plate?

I have my mother's planc, made from ship steel at Milford Docks, just across the Cleddau from Pembroke Dock, by my Grandad. I used it tonoght to make Welsh cakes (picau ar y maen) using Nia's recipe and they came out great. My only tip is to add the liquid in two stages and only add what you need to make slightly firm dough that doesn't crack when kneaded.

My wife makes them every Christmas. She is third generation from Wales. I have been eating them every Christmas for about 46 years. She makes some right away, but puts dough back and makes them over several days.

Before my father passed about 20 years ago, he used to rave about my mother's little cakes she made every morning [she passed in the 1950's]. She was English, he was in the Army, met overseas and married in 1951. Anyway, he said she'd make them quickly, path them out then put them in the skillet and in a few minutes they were done. The look on his face as he told me about it said it all. I tried to make some for him once and I was close but not exact. These cakes by Nia seem to be what he was talking about and I shall try. Thank you for sharing!

1 lb (~3 2/3 cups) self raising flour + some extra for rolling
If you don't have self raising flour you can make 1 lb of self raising flour by sifting together 1 lb (~3 1/4 cups) of all purpose flour and 2 Tbsps of baking powder
    6 oz of margarine
1 oz of Lard (Nia's grandma's key ingredient but can be substituted for other fats)
7 oz of caster sugar (fine sugar)
    2 oz of sultanas
3 oz of raisins (currants in the UK)
    3 eggs frothed
Slabs of salted Welsh butter to eat with!

    Thank you!
Grandma Anne Reese was from the Rhonda Valley.. served as a nurse in WWII during the bombings.
Met my to be grandfather Charles Dailey, an Irish American from Indiana. They came back stateside after the war, ending up in Southern California.
I remember making these, and Cornish Pastsy’s with her.
I lost the 3x5 card with her recipe and this is very close to hers!
She was a big fan of the golden currents and that’s all we used.
    Can’t wait to make these.
    Love ya Grandma!

One of my neighbours had a pizza stone and used to make them on there. I used to find that hilarious as a kid because obviously, Welsh Cakes are not pizzas.
Now that I'm older, I get why they did it, and I do think they come out better on a stone than in a pan.

I have added a few drops of Tabasco about 5 to spice up a little.
