    Keanu Reeves maybe a huge hit again, but there was a time when his career was less than heavenly. Constantine is one of those devilish low points.
    Constantine is a 2005 American occult detective film directed by Francis Lawrence, in his feature length directorial debut, and starring Keanu Reeves as John Constantine. Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Djimon Hounsou co-star. With a screenplay by Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello, the film is based on DC Comics' Hellblazer comic book, with plot elements taken from the "Dangerous Habits" story arc (issues #41-46) and the "Original Sins" story arc.

      There are many things that most people liked when they came out that people now hate on and make fun of.
      And because most people are sheep that cant think for themselves they automatically have the same opinion as the popular people on youtube even if they had a different opinion about something earlier.
      Most people loved the Sonic Adventure games before Game Grumps hated on them for example.

      This film is excellent. Doug loves going against the grain. He seemed to completely misundersrand a lot of things in this film, like the devil taking Keanu's cancer tumours out. It reminds me of his Last Action Hero review where he didn't get it.

    • @HBKCommish
      @HBKCommish 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You know he doesn't always dislike the films he says. A lot of times he's just playing "devils advocate" so to speak. I can't say whether or not he truly dislikes this one or not, but if he does, who cares? This outrage culture is getting out of control. I remember the days where Doug would post a review, and even if it was a beloved classic that he didn't like, MOST people were still pretty civil about it.

  • @ramirezthesilvite

      I really hope Doug was just going for a joke, because he really should have been able to decipher this scene. As a film critic, he should be able to decipher subtly and meaning. I don't know how this one could have been lost on him.

    • @Regolith86
      @Regolith86 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @CloudLens Capa Movies should stand on their own, since most people who watch them probably won't have read the source material, particularly for more obscure things like Constantine. If it's not in the movie, it might as well not exist for the majority of the audience. Many critics review movies with that in mind.
      ...That being said, I've never read any of the source material and I still understood what was going on in that scene, so I think in this case Doug was just being a bit obtuse.

    • @brionmyers9640
      @brionmyers9640 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Wertsir In NC's defense, you should not have to have prior knowledge to enjoy a film. This and Percy Jackson are still bad movies, even though their source material is great. Neither movie worked as an adaptation because they ignored the source material or as an independent film because they don't expand thier worlds.

      Well its "dark" but not dark enough like how the comics goes most of the time, and not even detailed or darker as how the Bible represents all this demons/gods/angels, it is fun but if you want a more realistic depiction of the bible demons and angels you arent going to find it in there, neither a faithful representation of the comic is based on, but if you just want an action movie like Blade but with demons and angels instead of vampires its good enough.
      Also i think the critic was saying that how he can get away with a self-sacrifice act to "enter heaven" so he can escape the clutches of Lucifer while abusing the hell out of a righteous act right in front of God without being punished? because it looks cool but it does gives away that you arent doing that for a self-sacrifice notion but more like abusing that "rule" so you can escape from ultimate evil cheating your way throught, if it were more accurate he could had been going straight to hell because of that, but then again i get it because its a comic based movie and you are supposed to just turn your brain off and look at the action so i always give it a pass.

      @The One Who Laughs Well, Revelation 12 has the Devil represented by a dragon. It is a very metaphorical story of Satan's failed attempt to stop the purpose of the Messiah, and to destroy Israel. The third of the stars he swept from heaven were angels who sided with him; as Satan is actually a rebellious angel himself.
      Technically, there are no "actual" dragons in the Bible (unless you count the great beasts Behemoth and Leviathan, whose descriptions interestingly resemble dinosaurs), but dragon metaphors are scattered about.
      With the liberties this movie takes (Gabriel is a MALE! Seriously! Call her Gabrielle if you want!), it's not a big deal for dragons to exist.

      I respect the critic's opinion but this is one of those times that i don't see where his argument is coming from. If the movie wants to take this theme "seriously" then let it be. This movie has a couple jokes sprinkled in between scene and most depend on your religious point of view to like them or to even understand them. Neither Shia or Keannu were at their best on this one and some of the characters follow a formula that has been beaten to death but Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton, Djimon Hounsoua and Peter Stormare are great in their roles and i feel the "dullness" of the main character and sidekick is a little intended in order to make room for the rest of the characters and to display a more interesting world that I think is the highlight of the film. Worth a watch at least.

    I LOVED Peter Stormare's Devil in this movie. He was a total evil blood-dripping movie monster. But he was in a suit. And funny. And basically, what Ultimate Evil should be. My favorite Evil moment is a little one. Constantine has slit his wrists to die. He tries to light a last cigarette, but he cut the tendons in his wrists so his hands don't work. Satan lights his cigarette, but right before he does, as Constantine is leaning forward weakly to light it, Satan pulls the lighter away. Just for a second. It was such a perfect moment of The Devil being a total dick. Like, even there, he can't pass up an opportunity to be evil. Loved it.
    You also never mention that John Constantine is very English and very blonde in the comic books.

    Honestly I really enjoyed Constantine. It wasn’t Oscar worthy, it’s a little dated and cheesy, but it still holds up. Usually, I’m on board with Critics’ reviews, but he didn’t even have anything to say about the film that was fundamentally wrong besides semantics. He was just bitching. And no, I’m sorry! Pete Stormare was AMAZING as the Devil. He was in the film for 10 minutes and he easily had the best performance.

    • @SangTheCryptek
      @SangTheCryptek 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Sanquinity Yeah except that you can over-analyze anything from a critical point of view and make it look bad. The Shawshank Redemption is IMDB's top rated film, but you could easily make a youtube video making it look like a terrible movie, and if you're popular enough, people will go along with it.
      Context is an important thing when being a critic. Like in the video the Critic makes a joke about the doctor's terrible bedside manner, but in that scene, its heavily implied that she's aware of Constatine's dealings with the supernatural, so that's why she's so blunt when talking to him; they have history.

    I have to say Shia LaBeouf made an amazing comeback in the movie “Peanut Butter Falcon.” You can just tell he put 100% into that movie. Don’t let the name fool you, it’s by far one of the most impactful stories with a valuable lesson to teach. Especially to those who are considered autistic or mentally challenged.
