Constantine: DC’s most underrated movie?

  • In 2005, Warner Bros adapted the Hellblazer comic by Alan Moore and Stephen R. Bissette, bringing their demon-hunting anti-hero, John Constantine, to the big screen. With Keanu Reeves chosen to play the lead, hopes were high that this would be another major franchise for the star following his success in The Matrix trilogy. While the film did decent box office, it was not a big enough hit to score a sequel. Still, in the seventeen years following its release, a pretty significant cult has grown around the film, with Reeves himself and director Francis Lawrence saying they would be open to revisiting the character. In this episode of DC Revisited, we explore why Constantine is such an underrated DC flick.

True, Constantine should've been played by a British actor. But Keanu Reeves did a great job as the Hellblazer. Those Demons and Angels looked great. Peter Stormare was awesome as Lucifer.

I remember hearing that the idea was that Constantine bet big and got conned by a demon, got cleaned out and lost the girl he was trying to save. And worse, has fallen afoul of the Almighty. That is where the 2005 movie picks up, with his group disbanded and him hunting demons but knowing it's not going to be enough.
Which makes the 2005 ending so important to him as a character.
Maybe do the prequel; and for the fans who know, they'll be thrilled to finally have the complete picture.

Had I not read the comics beforehand, I imagine that I would have loved the film. My issue is that they watered the character down for the movie. They turned an occult detective with a wicked sense of humour into a rogue exorcist that is played by Keanu Reeves. They even changed the pronunciation of the name so as to make it more palatable to American moviegoers. Again, it's a good movie, but it wasn't the Hellblazer that comic fans were promised.

Both Constantines I've seen have been great, but in movie form, I can only see Keanu's version as the ultimate one. I feel his portrayal has been in line with what the DCEU, at least pre Aquaman, has felt like.
You know what moment cemented this for me? When Rachel Weisz's character asks to "hold the elevator, please" and Constantine just says, "Not if I can help it." with the wiliest smirk, just as the elevator doors close. Dude had the quick wit, charm, and bravado to pull that off with such class, that it just vibes with the type of protagonist they need in DC Movies.
A hard R uber-religious action/horror sequel would break media honestly, and unless Blumhouse and James Wan got together with a Jordan Peele, Matt Reeves or Zack Snyder type to build that universe properly, I don't think that spectacular Keanustantine vehicle is happening any time soon...

Other than that, though. Matt carries the day. (Constantine was originally modelled on STING--of the Police and Tantra Yoga fame and you can read all about THAT in Sting's introduction to the book John Constantine, Hellblazer: 30th Anniversary Celebration

I loved the character, from his earliest appearances in Swamp Thing. I wasn't *as* thrilled with Hellblazer, but it was still a pretty good series. But I ended up loving this movie in entirely new ways. It's a bit different, but it's no less entertaining and effective. I'd say it still stands up as my favorite DC film (yes, including all the ones with Batman).

I LOVE this movie and the performances are fantastic! I'm glad it's receiving more appreciation. I was unfamiliar with the comics before this release but when I researched the source I obviously saw the changes. However, I'm usually not hung up on comic accuracy sometimes anyway, because I think creative changes are allowed and expected. If it works it works!
Everyone is incredible in their roles and interpretations. Keanu is fantastic here, in great form and layered as Constantine, he doesn't get enough credit sometimes for this performance. Tilda and Peter are spectacular as Gabriel and Lucifer. Some of my favorites of those archetypes.
The vibe with Constantine reminds me greatly of The Prophecy, which is another classic in my opinion. I'm almost always down for a spiritual warfare, good vs evil (supernatural horror thriller), fight for humanity type of story and this exceeded all my expectations.

When I heard they will make a tv series, I watched it, but was disappointed. It was suppose to be truer to the comics, but I prefer the movie. The TV show was enjoyable, but i had to separate it from the movie.

Yesss! About time someone shined a spotlight on this movie! Hellblazer is one on the best comics( in my opinion) and even though the movie character of Constantine is very different from the comic character- Keanu gave it a new spin and transformed Constantine in a great way! Constantine is one of my favorite movies and I really hope for a sequel.

I like constantine movie since it's release, yes it deviates from his character. But the story is well written despite being a "putting their own original story on them" type of movie.
If you compare that to "putting their own original story on them" type of movies these days. This movie might as well be a masterpiece.

No mention that the character of Constantine, while nonexistent in films since that the Keanu film and hit or miss on TV, has had a very prominent showing in animation with several animated films revolving around him and a pretty central role in the multi-animated film arc concluding with Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.
As for the live action movie, I really liked the Reeves film. Visually it has some stunning moments, the story feels personal yet high stakes without requiring a beam in the sky or invading armies, and Keanu makes the role his own without feeling like a complete departure.
I truly hope JJ Abrahms was completely kicked out of handling DC projects and doesn't get anywhere this or the Superman franchises to ruin them. And if WB decides to make another Constantine hopefully they give Lawrence another shot. He did well by the first one.

    • @slewone4905

superman movie were never that good. The problem is superman is too powerful. The whole of DC is based on Batman. The reason Constantine works , is because he and batman are flawed. They both have a good balance of comic book and realism. AS to animated, those are in the right format to tell comic book stories.

I might be representing the minority here, but I always thought Siskel & Ebert were hacks as "movie critics". I can't count how many awesome movies they panned. To be honest, it looked like we're biased in favor of certain film makers = those movies they praise, but weren't that great.

@@olewyrdd you're experience / information about them may have begun when they were "super old", but I'm old enough to draw from when they weren't "super old"; they were I'm their late 30s/early 40s and they were biased then too. There's movies in the 80s and 90s that they panned, but were financial AND audience successes. The fat one always spoke negatively about movies in genres he didn't personally like.
