That was a rare special edition PS3 in a unique color and did not have PS2 compatibility. The one you are referring to was just a standard black 80GB console that happened to come bundled with a copy of MGS4.

This makes them extreamly reliable and not likely to fail. It's a hard mod to do so expect to pay quite a bit of money for one.
My launch Slim is still going strong and my backup Slim is as good as new. I envy those who have backwards compatible fats, but I don’t envy how unreliable they are and how much maintenance they need. If I really want to play PS2 games on my TV, I’ll go for an actual PS2 and a Retrotink upscaler.
My old super slim PS3 had died on me not too long ago, so I just now purchased another one, which was an upgrade from the previous one I owned. It was the GOW Red superslim version that came bundled with a 1TB SSD, 2 motion controllers, 1 regular controller, and a couple of games, all for a decent price. I wanted to start playing some games I've already owned and have never completed yet. I'm currently playing Way of the Samurai 4 and having fun with it. It's definitely still a must buy for me since some games aren't probably ever going to get another port or sequel.
Been trying to beef up the PS3 collection for the past few years now. I have all the 1st party collections physically minus Sly and Jak, but aside from that the collection is in a spot I’m super happy with
That MGS 4 theme is very iconic, but also very depressing. I bought the 500GB SuperSlim PS3 console and I have a blast playing a lot of PS3 games on the system. I really love the PS3 InFamous series, Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction and Crack in Time, God of War 3, Uncharted Trilogy, etc. And it's also a very good Blu-Ray/DVD player. Unfortenatly my console is region locked, so not all movies and TV shows will work on my system.
Bro... a fellow ModNation Racers vet? I didn't think i'd find anyone else that played that game a whole lot besides me! I really love that game and i hope Santa Monica and Media Molecule team up to make a ModNation Racers 3 since UFG is no longer around... i miss ModNation so much bro.... 😔
I bought a later gen Slim to replace my Gen 1 slim because replacing the disc drive didn’t work. It’s definitely a cheaper build. Killzone 2 was fun to pick up again. But Singularity was rough. I loved it and beat it. But then got my PC and bought it on Steam…whoa lol. PS3 is BAD. But man I loved it when it was the main in its day.
Why does no one mention the positives of the og ps3 and it's backwards compatibility? Once it's plugged into a large 4k tv using a hdmi cable instead of the stock composites or through some hd adapter on ps2 and then the smoothing is turned on *chefs kiss! It's excellent, and for me, that's what makes the ownership of an og ps3 makes it worth the value+ maintenance.. also, it's all in one. Thanks though I do love your videos. Mgs4 is the best game in my collection :)
Some stranded games that weren't mentioned here that I'd recommend: LBP 1& 2 (even just for the story modes), Puppeteer, Modnation Racers, Mercenaries 2, The Saboteur, Motorstorm 1-3. MAG was another one of my favorites from that generation but unfortunately the servers are down for good
MAG was insanely good fun. Along with Warhawk that were great games but online only. Even though you could play local multiplayer with Warhawk, it’s limited in comparison to online. These games taught me that online only games were not the worth my time.
The PS3 was my first console I bought as a working independent adult fresh out of my parents house so it holds a special place in my heart, I loved it so much. My most treasured game from that system is Drakengard 3 collectors edition which was so expensive and hard to track down and I don’t regret it. Now after watching this video I’m feeling the urge to buy another PS3 lol
Two that I would suggest are: 3D Dot Game Heroes. Possible the worst title for a non-Square Enix game. It is a classic Zelda style game from Fromsoft. It's silly and wholly unique. Mod Nation Racers. Its the best attempt to do a Mario Kart that I have seen. Its got a great suite of items and tracks as well as an incredibly robust character, kart, and track editor. The track editor is INSANE.
I just bought one so I could play the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy and Skate 3. I have a huge list of games I want to play though. Also picked up Medal of Honor with Medal of Honor Frontline remaster and SSX. This console is a nostalgia trip even though I never owned one growing up!
WOW how convenient i bought a PS3 a couple months ago and recollecting old games ive either had/ cant play anymore on current gen because they didnt get remastered and games ive always wanted to play i bought like 20 games now and adding to my collection its nice to go back
So took a look in my game drawer and the ps3 games I still have p5, skate 3, the guided date paradox, darksiders 2 limited edition, Mugen souls Z, the witch and the hundred knight and white knight chronicles. My bm sold ps3 and some other favorite games years back like diagaea D2. Almost all of this I play on ps collection or have the remake. If it’s the same for you please keep them in good shape the history of some these amazing titles that may not get another entry in the series to shine is worth keep for entertainment and joy it gave us
Honestly , the PS3/XB360 era was the best generation of consoles , period . Look at all the game franchises that started during this gen: Assassin’s Creed , Bioshock , the Batman Arkham series , Borderlands , Red Dead Redemption , and so many more . You had Fallout first appear on consoles and you also had Skyrim come out in that time period . GTA 5 , anyone ? So many great games .
I collect to play for playstation 3 and the collections are a great place to start. I personally am hunting for game of the year editions for games that I want to own. These are the editions with all the DLC content bundled together instead of downloading for a high price, it's a great way to get the most value for your money.
Mate why did you read my mind, I literally just started googling this topic YESTERDAY because I’m feeling nostalgic. And now you release this Thank you, and stop being such a good mind reader
I have a 160GB PS3 and I have a variety of classics. Skate 1, SmackDown vs Raw 08 & 09, Saint's Row 2, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Black Ops 1 & 2, Modern Warfare 3, World at War, Midnight Club LA. Getting more in the future.
I played God of War Ascension Multiplayer "kinda" recently on my channel. The servers are still up and there's still a few of people out there playing. The level gap for a newcomer is obviously insane and I think there's literally less than a dozen players at any time, but hey, at least you can still give it a shot if you like.
That's like how I decided to play doom 2016 for the 1st time during 2023 and my 1st multiplayer match was against max level players with thousands of hours played 😂
I have 2 60gb PS3's I still use. Both boxed, one is PAL the other is USA NTSC. I bought them originally as blu ray players for region A + B playback, glad I kept them.
I bought a used ps3 in 2018 cuz i wanted to play it again after so many years. Then I got the yellow lights of death. Never touched a PS3 ever again. A complete waste of time and money.
The PS3 is a fantastic system. I'm glad I bought one years ago. I'm definitely glad I bought a lot of the games a long time ago. A lot of the games have gotten extremely expensive.
I have the one with the 320gb. It was a gift for my birthday a couple of days ago! 🥰 I have always wanted one but couldn't afford it. So now I am just starting my ps3 collection! So excited! My must buy is Silent Hill.
Just want to clarify the power adapter compatibility. The Slim/Super Slim/PS4/PS4 Slim and PS5 share a cable but the OG PS3 and the PS4 Pro both use the bigger cable seen on PC.
I have a newer revision PS4 Pro and it still shares the same cable as the OG PS4 and PS5. I believe the earlier versions of the PS4 Pro has the PC like cable due to having a higher power draw.
My PS3 Slim just arrived yesterday and this video is perfectly timed. I had already picked up Yakuza: Dead Souls (which could make a fun Retro Rebound video by itself) and MGS4. I may have jumped the gun on buying Killzone 2 and 3 separately. I had no idea that there was a 1-3 collection and 2-3 have already been shipped to me. I also picked up Resistance 1 and 2 as well as Heavenly Sword. I'm limiting myself to games I can only play on a PS3 right now. Anything that's on streamable on PS4/PS5 I'm not buying. I've found that PS3 streaming works really well for me.
Just watched your video on FF13 the other day. Today I was watching videos on PlayStation history and I was looking on FB marketplace to purchase a PS3. And then here you are again on a subject that I’m interested in. Thanks for the vids and information.
We have proudly 4 PS3’s in the house all fully functional. Most recent purchase was the metallic red one straight from Japan. Love that thing. And easy to use because the PSU is universal
I remember when I was younger, my dad and I played "SPORT CHAMPIONS" with the PS move equipment and it was amazing, only great memory🙌 also played "INFAMOUS 1 AND 2" my dad was on the good side and me the evil side, amazing game too. miss that🙏
PS3 era had so many incredible games imo Some games u didnt mention but are PS3 bangers: - LittleBigPlanet games - Heavenly Sword - 3D Dot Heroes - Disgaea 3 - everyday shooter (psn) -MotorStorm Pacific Rift is still my fav racer of its type - Gran Turismo 6 - Heavenly Sword - Pixeljunk games - Wipeout HD (PSN) - Super Stardust HD (PSN) - Shatter (PSN) - Renegade Ops (PSN)
I have an M Classic plugged in my PS3 so I've gotten more quality visuals out of it. I'm playing through the Arkham series again on it. I know I can play the Remaster but I just love the PS3.
Man a lot of the games you showed here i still own. I even still have my slim ps3. It's not modded yet but the option is there. I have so many ps3 games it's crazy. The ps3 era was really pumping out games after games.
Still have next to my PC a PS3 slim I bought at Gamestop a few years ago, near perfect condition. Currently playing GT6 for the first time, and also I just bought MGS4 because I never played any MGS game except for Solid 1. Although the first copy I bought didn't work so I had to return it (currently waiting for a second one, fingers crossed. I heard MGS4 doesn't like the slim model).
The fact that you love trophies makes this my favorite video. That nolstagic trophy sound is unmatched… how can I send game? I got a shit ton of games that I don’t want in my collection
i just bought a ps3 slim for 60€ in a game store. now i'm buying exclusives like wipeout, ridge racer, uncharted and time crisis and oh man these games are amazing and cheap. prices ranged from 5-15€ wich is awesome😊
I love my playstation triple. I just recently bought an og fat one off my buddy for full ps1 and ps2 back compatibility. I still turn it on from time to time. Quite a few games stuck on that console that are still great to this day
I loved the 2018 God of war, and Ragnarok was OK (they needed at least 3 games for the Norse Saga IMHO). However, the Greek Saga is where is at for me. I just prefer the saga, and also teh hack'n'slash genre. I know they won't go back to it, but I would love a remake of the Greek Saga. The PS5 deserves Greek Saga Kratos! =]
The MGS 4 Special edition you showed was an exclusive to Japan known as the “Hagane Edition” (I own one) and it is the CECH00 - it is not BC, just FYI for those watching
I've never actually had to deal with HDCP problems with the PS3. I only ever had the Super Slim, but I just plugged it straight into my capture card and it just worked
I haven't heard any mention of the 3D compatibility in this video unless I missed it but hey I guess I'm the only one that would still use 3D today. I don't have a PS3 TV but I do have an ol' Samsung 55" 3D TV that I do use for movies. I have the original fat PS3 that's the A01 model, fully backwards compatible, I have a 320GB in box original Slim and an in box Azurite Blue super slim PS3 that I'm mainly using for reliability as I'm seldom using the fat PS3 to keep its lifespan up. I do have a PS2 but when using a PS2 game in the fat PS3 with HDMI, it has a more clearer picture, just not as crappy compared to using composite or component cables on the PS2, at least to me with a golf game. I am using Plasma TV's, not LED's if you're wondering. LED's doesn't go great with old games at least for me.
The PS3 being considered retro is a terrifying thought

It was the GOW Red superslim version that came bundled with a 1TB SSD, 2 motion controllers, 1 regular controller, and a couple of games, all for a decent price. I wanted to start playing some games I've already owned and have never completed yet. I'm currently playing Way of the Samurai 4 and having fun with it. It's definitely still a must buy for me since some games aren't probably ever going to get another port or sequel.
I remember when Target had a clearance on Dual Shock 3s and I got 3 for 35 bucks each. Still have 2 new in box
The batteries are likely not able to hold sufficient charge at this point...
@@metaldiceman replacements are all over the Internet
I bought the GoW Saga Collection last summer and that code still works in 2024.
I didn’t grew up playing PS3. I mostly play 360, but I been collecting ps3 games because I miss out on good games
Is he stalking me? I literally bought one like the other day!!!
In July of last year 2023, I got my PS3 slim 1TB for $100. Came with one game, Gran Turismo.
Texas
My favorite is the slim model too. I'm happy I got all the games I wanted for the PS3. Most PS3 games are still cheap, so now is the time to get them.
Heading out tomorrow morning with my son to pick up a PS3 and a stack of games. A little history lesson coming up "back in my day"
i really appreciate you speaking at a good pace and that i dont actually have to speed up like most of the videos on yt.
It's a shame mod nation racers isn't more popular, it's so much better than Mario kart
No
Real
Most broken game ever and I was so hyped I even was in the beta. It failed for a reason. Sonic Racing did the kart racing on ps3 better
Vita one is fun
Bro... a fellow ModNation Racers vet? I didn't think i'd find anyone else that played that game a whole lot besides me! I really love that game and i hope Santa Monica and Media Molecule team up to make a ModNation Racers 3 since UFG is no longer around... i miss ModNation so much bro.... 😔
Classic Sly Cooper background music, brings back good memories.
PS3 is BAD. But man I loved it when it was the main in its day.
i do still have my ps3 and fun fact you can play blu ray movies 🍿 on it and the good news it still works tell this day 👍 !
Need somebody to do an analysis as to why the remasters available on PS3 were given so much more love than modern systems’ “remasters”
Great, in depth video. Another banger matty
I picked up the backwards compatible PS3 for like $120 a couple years ago and have slowly been building my PS2 collection 😅
I miss this era so much :(
LittleBigPlanet 1,2,3 and Karting
Some stranded games that weren't mentioned here that I'd recommend: LBP 1& 2 (even just for the story modes), Puppeteer, Modnation Racers, Mercenaries 2, The Saboteur, Motorstorm 1-3. MAG was another one of my favorites from that generation but unfortunately the servers are down for good
MAG was insanely good fun. Along with Warhawk that were great games but online only. Even though you could play local multiplayer with Warhawk, it’s limited in comparison to online. These games taught me that online only games were not the worth my time.
Happy to see some love for Puppeteer, that game always flies under the radar
@@malangadong_1685 Modnation Racers, just finished and it's sure top 3 kart racers of all time. Truly an experience!
Two that I would suggest are:
3D Dot Game Heroes.
Weird that PS3 is considered retro as its right next to my PS5 and frequently played.

I still love collecting for PS3, prices aren't too bad but they keep going up so now's the time
I just bought one so I could play the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy and Skate 3. I have a huge list of games I want to play though. Also picked up Medal of Honor with Medal of Honor Frontline remaster and SSX. This console is a nostalgia trip even though I never owned one growing up!
Definitely the best time to buy digital only games on the PSN. Lots of amazing games!
WOW how convenient i bought a PS3 a couple months ago and recollecting old games ive either had/ cant play anymore on current gen because they didnt get remastered and games ive always wanted to play i bought like 20 games now and adding to my collection its nice to go back
Let’s keep up the 2 million+ users worldwide every year.
If it’s the same for you please keep them in good shape the history of some these amazing titles that may not get another entry in the series to shine is worth keep for entertainment and joy it gave us
If you would get the backwards compatible model and worry about the internals get it Frankensteined
Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition originally came in a black label. So, if you’re not into red labels, the black label version is out there.
"You had Fallout first appear on consoles" Hum Hum... not quite you see. *cough* brotherhood of steel *cough*
And now you release this
Thank you, and stop being such a good mind reader
the ps3 also had that DBZ budakai collection 🔥🔥
Xbox 360 has it also i believe 🤔
@@kidcurry4202 it does 🔥 that collection overall is a gem lol
Instant recognition of the Ratchet and Clank music 🔥
I have a 160GB PS3 and I have a variety of classics. Skate 1, SmackDown vs Raw 08 & 09, Saint's Row 2, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Black Ops 1 & 2, Modern Warfare 3, World at War, Midnight Club LA. Getting more in the future.
Keep up the great retro gaming love, man! Always enjoy your videos and hearing your perspectives.
@@Concerned.Citizen Damn xD
I have 2 60gb PS3's I still use. Both boxed, one is PAL the other is USA NTSC. I bought them originally as blu ray players for region A + B playback, glad I kept them.
God what a great channel. He should have 500k subs by now.
thank you Matty for giving us a place to escape and keeping it strictly gaming it means alot!!!!
I went back and is currently playing MGS HD Trilogy (Peace Walker). I love that system ❤
Sorry for another comment, I love the Sly Cooper music playing in the background.
Silent Hill was patched.
Not every kopy of Mortal Kombat Komplete is a greatest hits version.
Knowing the prices for all these games will skyrocket before I have the money to buy them makes my stomach turn.
Whelp, glad I got my PS3 collection out of the way in 2023
Just want to clarify the power adapter compatibility.
We call those cables "kettle cables" here in the UK
First ps3 I had to fix it and still running. Good video to know some special exclusive games❤. I need to find some to ad to my collection now😂
Why would you say that you're a weirdo for liking the OG GOW games more than the newer walking sim games
Hoooo Dead Souls! Never tried that one.
Worth it for the Sly Cooper and Ratchet & Clank games. Also the FF XIII trilogy, since it's not available on Switch & PS5.
I remember when I was younger, my dad and I played "SPORT CHAMPIONS" with the PS move equipment and it was amazing, only great memory🙌 also played "INFAMOUS 1 AND 2" my dad was on the good side and me the evil side, amazing game too. miss that🙏
PS3 era had so many incredible games imo
Some games u didnt mention but are PS3 bangers:
- LittleBigPlanet games
- Heavenly Sword
- 3D Dot Heroes
- Disgaea 3
- everyday shooter (psn)
-MotorStorm Pacific Rift is still my fav racer of its type
- Gran Turismo 6
- Heavenly Sword
- Pixeljunk games
- Wipeout HD (PSN)
- Super Stardust HD (PSN)
- Shatter (PSN)
- Renegade Ops (PSN)
I hooked mine back up. So glad that I kept it. A ton of online games that I purchased that you just can’t get anymore. All great games.
I have an M Classic plugged in my PS3 so I've gotten more quality visuals out of it. I'm playing through the Arkham series again on it. I know I can play the Remaster but I just love the PS3.
bro ur speaking voice is perfect and engaging love it
Man a lot of the games you showed here i still own. I even still have my slim ps3. It's not modded yet but the option is there. I have so many ps3 games it's crazy. The ps3 era was really pumping out games after games.
Firmware updates and game installation speed is agregeous even on an SSD. Took a full day to download mgs4 and install
This was a great breakdown video. Covered all the bases.
i just bought a ps3 slim for 60€ in a game store. now i'm buying exclusives like wipeout, ridge racer, uncharted and time crisis and oh man these games are amazing and cheap. prices ranged from 5-15€ wich is awesome😊
I got an original fat PS3 for $100 on Ebay back in like... 2017 or so? Still works great!
I bought one in 2024 and around 50 games so far. It’s pretty awesome!
Sadly the PS3 online store seems to be down
I haven't heard any mention of the 3D compatibility in this video unless I missed it but hey I guess I'm the only one that would still use 3D today.
