  • Sometimes, no matter how good a director is, their style just isn't a fit for the source material they're adapting. The 2005 film adaptation of AIR by Toei Animation is very much along the lines of Dezaki Osamu's earlier work, but the clash with the original visual novel makes it seem like it's trying to get away from its ultra-moe nakige style, and Key fans weren't too happy. Jisu of SecretIdentityStudio checks out the maligned movie to see if you should watch it... and find out what the heck is with those repeat shots and camera decisions.

The AIR anime case is so strange since the TV anime was very rushed, and the Toei one was so...strange. As you said it really does feel like it misses the point of the story it's adapting, but idk if it's to the extent mentioned here because AIR's story is so vague that it really depends on the consumer. That being said, the film is a strange anomaly of the time, it just exists

Great video! You did your research well with this; I somehow never even realized that whole idea of familial live succeeding where romantic love failed, that’s a really great observation.

I actually like the Film and prefer it over the TV anime. The art style is alright and not weird alien moe blobs like the anime series (which needs a remake) and the movie actually makes me cry unlike the anime series. I don't like the distracting lighting effects that the movie has though.

I recently finished Air VN, and i have to say that is the best way to enjoy this story, the anime does not compare because of how the novel handle the paths and choices that you make. For example within the 3 routes, if you choose other than Misuzu, Yukito will stay on other places rather that Kamio's Residence, so it differs a lot.
Another thing is how Sora is portrayed, boths anime and movie didn't manage well this part of the Story. In the VN Sora does not only serves to fullfil the wish of boths protagonists, it shows too Misuzu's point of view during all the days, and shows to us that Misuzu forced herself to stay calm and happy because she didn't wanted to bother Yukito and Haruko. Even in the final section, Sora serves us to see how Haruko Arc ends and what we have to do after Misuzu's death.

The part with the crow in the TV anime felt like I wasted a lot of episodes with the protagonist since he doesn't really do anything after that. I actually didn't like that part and I rather have him as an active protagonist to the end since he was already building his relationship with Misuzu throughout the story. So the movie does that and that's why I liked the movie more than the TV series. I also hated 80% of the side characters in the TV anime since I felt like they were just fillers and wasted my time so the movie is even better since it tuck those away. Also Osamu Dezaki is a visionary/cinematic director compared to a lot of people before and after him.

It seems like if things had gone according to keikaku, having a more approachable movie raise awareness of the story, and potentially funnel viewers in for the anime series, it could have worked out.
I guess they should have, AIR'd on the side of caution on their, AIRdates.

Ahh, AiR. Clannad overshadowed it my mind, but it came first and kick off all the Visual Novel crazy... if I remember right. When They Cry and many others came after.
Personally the only motion picture I enjoy over the series was Touch and that was just because it was so long and animated so badly (product of it's time).

It took me some time to digest the AIR movie, I used to hate it. But when I remember that AIR is the most lacking in romance out of the "old"Key works and the movie provides me just that... I just can't seem to hate it anymore. Also, now that anime industry artstyle is all moe dominated, I've grown to like that old anime style from Toei as something different.

The Toei adaptions of Key stuff doesn't have the best reputation but the Air movie honestly wasn't bad

If you like Moe so much why do you keep pronouncing it weird?
