It's funny to hear this described as a forgotten classic, it had such a big presence in 90's anime fandom.

so iconic of the era! back in the webring days this series was hugely popular. the title is so eyecatching when paired with the visuals... 80's anime had a knack for that.

Really nice review! Shame you stopped. Was looking for the Bubblegum Crash review you announced :)

I like the idea of a BGC film so long as it's handled with care. With AI being integrated more and more into society, there are plenty of themes that could be explored there, and who doesn't want to see bad-ass babes in robot suits battling bigger robots? James Cameron did pretty well with "Alita: Battle Angel," but as for that "Ghost in the Shell" live action...
... the nightmares... they just won't stop!

I haven't really seen the OVA but I've watched BGC: Tokyo 2040 every few years and it's great, the dub is well acted, its localized well and is some ways better than the sub, but mind the tonal shift at the midpoint in ep 13. Its great when a story can have a sense of scale and stakes where there can be consequences without needing to reset the status quo at the end of each episode so that the story never needs to end, in this case it has a beginning, middle and end, which is good.

BGC had an odd history...its tries with Mospeda and MegaZone 24 is as legendary as the series itself! The character and mecha designers would be involved with GallForce and Maccross which are still PHENOMENAL as many of them became huge industry hits! The music was amazing and many hits borrowing heavily from Rock, Pop and other hits from the 80s. A perfect blend of genres to make a delicious treat for the eyes and ears!

So what's the story with the audio? It's fine, but not quite as good as previous videos.
Also, I think this is the first I've heard anyone actually talk about Bubblegum Crisis, aside from in passing. It was nice.

Let's just say the homemade pop filter left... something to be desired. I'm scrapping it and going back to the old setup. Thanks for the input!

Just discovered your channel and your vids are really enjoyable! I Really appreciate how you often cover the history or context of some shows you cover, including the western scene

great retrospective. I've been curious to hear more opinions about this franchise. thinking about buying it.
I've heard that Bubblegum Crisis, Crash and Tokyo 2040 are the best entries. and that AD Police Files and Protect and Serve are darker and good but not as good. And the final spin-off, Parasite Dolls is needlessly edgy and twisted and not very good.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Bubblegum Crisis and AD Police files are the best entries. The latter is particularly good if you like noir and issues of cybernetic enhancements reducing humanity. BG Crash is...meh. I did not like the Tokyo 2040 remake. I didn't like the re-characterization of the Knight Sabers members - they all felt more generic, and I didn't like that it strayed away from cyberpunk into pseudo-religious next-stage-of-human-evolution stuff.
