  • Magical Angel Creamy Mami is the face of 80s magical girls, it's the root of a lot of what you see in modern idol anime and mixed media projects, and it gets weird. Aliens, bears, ghosts, youkai, fairy tales, and more fill the show you're more likely to have heard of than actually watched, and Jisu of SecretIdentityStudio walks you through why maybe that should change.

Funny thing is, Pripara and Creamy Mami actually had a crossover for the Pripara arcade game back in 2016.

This one was my favourite of Pierrot's new take on the genre, really spearheaded the shift from Toei's originals, influenced by Minky Momo's perfection of the formula, which aired alongside it by studio Ashi. These two studios have a fun and interesting relationship where they influence each other. Persia is my 2nd favourite of the era, also by Pierrot.
But you hit the nail on the head here when you say it's a fantasy written for 8 year olds. Really romantic and fun and girly. I love it.

For some reason I always get Fancy Lala and Creamy Mami mixed up.

I was about to contradict you, and I will on some aspect, but I have to give you on the main/core part of your argument, around the magical girl idols aspect.
I will raise, on you claim of most 80s and most reconisable, with Gigi, which preceded and inspired Creamy, and whom we see colaborating in one of your clip ( 4:19 ).
It is also possible than my bias come from my frenchness and we had several douzen of those magical girl show on regular tv mid/end 80s (who remember Lilly and the seven color flower?), but in my French heart, and the heart of a multitude of young impressionable French teenager boy of that time Gigi was the first, Gigi was the most beloved one.

You do have a point; depending on where you are, Minky Momo (localized as Gigi) may take Creamy Mami's title. It's always interesting to see how different properties are more or less popular in different countries, like how Nichijou is bigger abroad than it is in Japan.

@@SecretIdentityStudio that being said, Creamy was also extremly successful in France.
With Gigi and Emi Magique (Magical Emi, the Magic Star), they were the 3 most popular of the early magical-girls in France, but there is always a special place in your heart for your first one.

Old school anime is prettier. Today's anime looks childish. Every character looks the same.
