  • 1985's Night on the Galactic Railroad, a film adaptation of the 1927 novel, is its best-known adaptation and has inspired plenty of other anime. Jisu of SecretIdentityStudio looks at the middle-grades tearjerker and its tale of cats, heaven, and self-sacrifice, among other things.

I honestly really prefer the look of the old scratchy cells over the newer crispy clean digitally coloured anime. When it comes to fantasy based series/movies it gives me a very story book feel which can be more fitting depending on the series.

I get what you mean although I don’t think it needs to look scratchy/grainy to get that feel across
For me it’s more so the art style
While both happen to be old
I get this feeling of a “story book” vibe to the style in both this film and the Heidi anime

Yeah really, old school hand drawn is way better than cgi in general. Just looks so much more natural and special.

@@monstergonads11this movie uses CGI but it's used on the clock pendelum and the monochromal spheres.

This is the kind of movie you want to watch late at night. Get real cozy and let it take you.
Also, worth mentioning is that the soundtrack was composed by Haruomi Hosono, arguably one of the most influential Japanese musicians of the 20th century, whose grandfather was a survivor of the Titanic.

This is exactly how I discovered it - channel surfing late at night decades ago and it has stayed with me ever since.

I watched this tripping really hard my first time watching this movie.. it was an experience that was strong and overwhelmingly woke for me at the time. I remember thinking why do we not have more films to help kids and teens with the subjects that this movies does?

I found this when I was 21 and I was not sure how to talk about. My sister passed in 2019, and I was finding it hard to cope. This Anime has always been something to go to. Also I got kicked out of some Anime groups od younger fans who said, "never heard of it, so its not Anime, you are not a real Anime fan." I took my leave and just figured I was just not like them

I saw your other comment on another video I’m so sorry for your loss of your sister :( I also believe that even though our loved ones is gone within our world I feel they’re out somewhere in another plain of fields of endless stars to meet again one day. I’m 17 I’m quite sad and embarrassed to hear the younger anime fans kicked you out cause they don’t consider it anime like what’s wrong with them you don’t deserve it :/ too bad for them they don’t appreciate in-depth and meaningful things and only care for superficialities.

you are the kind of fan I usually get into in depth conversation on Anime deeper meanings. And thank you.

It’s cool having in-depth conversations about what the stories about and it’s meanings but I’m too dumb to understand and express my thoughts properly sometimes haha XD

I decided to read the novel after it was mentioned in Shaman King manga. I was amazed by this book. Truly charming and magnificent and makes you think about your attitude to life, happiness, friendship and yourself.

The incompleteness of the original manuscript is surprising. It works so well in the film I took it as an intended writing decision.
Good example of how unintentional limitations can enhance an artistic work.

0:25 it would've been nice if you mentioned that before they adapted it to film, hiroshi masumura adapted it into a manga. the film uses masumura's character designs and visuals

It was a good spiritual hit, when he sees the star of the Scorpio and how the flame never ends. His choices on the railway and the dialogue he heard was not the same as Capanella's. I'm a Scorpio and watched it the first time this year on Chinese New Year. Good way to confirm my thoughts, being agnostic helped this immensely. It's either timing, or just a movie that had to be seen. This world's one big heck yeah.

I loved this film. I feel like even tho Campanella missed out on heaven, in giving his death meaning and joining his mother he found purpose. It's like the scorpion; his death had meaning. Campanella will make it to heaven imo bc he is a good cat, who wanted to help his mother. Beautiful film

I first heard of this movie in the 1997 edition of The Anime Guide by Trish Ledoux and Doug Ranney. Ten years later I finally ran across a copy and watched it, and was mesmerized. About an hour later, lying in bed, I finally figured out some of the key events and meanings of the movie and just sobbed for a while. Absolutely beautiful.

I remember watching this as a kid, I didn't know what the hell was going on. But man, those scenes on the train were amazing, especially the field of flowers. Great review, you covered the film well!

I just read the book this is based on, and both that and your video make me want to check it out even more. :) I didn't realize the manuscript was incomplete until now, but it does make sense -- the story felt a little vague in parts, even if it was beautiful.

It's not that the "tapes" (we're actually talking of film here) were worn out by time, it just hasn't recieved a complete restoraion where you correct all scratches and defects on every single frame.
Motion picture film gets very easily damaged so it wasn't uncommon even for fresh movie theatre prints to have dust and scratches even before it's projected, they're so little they become negligeable but ideally you want it to look like the best possible version of the negatives that went through the camera.
