      Very surprising. Mike Smith joined them right around that time, and he was well-known for his love of "soft" Soviet hockey. I'm guessing this was before he put his stamp on the team.
      To demonstrate Smith's MO:
      Gilmour was traded mid-season to the Sabres with JP Dumont for Michel Grosek (though, in fairness, Grosek was underratedly a tough MFer).
      Brad Brown and Dave Manson ended up in Montreal for Eric Weinrich.
      Clark was released, signing with the Leafs for the end of 2000.
      Bryan McCabe was traded to the Leafs for Alex Karpovtsev (RIP) before the 2000-01 season began.
      Traded Reid Simpson and Bryan Muir (neither of which played in this game, I believe) for Michael Nylander.
      Signed Valeri Zelepukin.
      Acquired Igor Korolev (RIP) for a 3rd round pick (which of course Toronto to wasted on a career minor leaguer).
      He also drafted players like:
      Mikhail Yakubov (53 NHL games)
      Pavel Vorobiev (57)
      Igor Radulov (43)
      Alexander Barkunov (0)
      Anton Babchuk (289)
      Alexander Kozhevnikov (0)
      I'm not sure if he was there for the 1999 draft as well (Dmitri Levinsky, Stepan Mokhov, 0 games between them). Though in fairness, he did also draft Craig Anderson, Tuomo Ruutu, Duncan Keith and James Wisniewski.
      Note that he was a big voice in the acquisition of Karpovtsev and Korolev in Toronto in 1998 and drafted Nikolai Antropov, Petr Svoboda and Alexei Ponikarovsky that year. Should be said that Ken Dryden and Pat Quinn also had big input that year, which might be why 2 out of 3 turned out pretty good.

    Janssen was one of those guys you will never see in the NHL again. He could skate, he had serviceable hands and offensive skill, but he was just a fourth line guy who'd always hit and fight when required. A great teammate and "locker room leader". The Hawks didn't need a LOT of them at that time with JR, Graham, Probie, Chelios etc. but ....

      As I recall he was one of the best faceoff takers in the league.
      His average win % was 57.6
      Even strength was 59.0
      PP was 58.0
      SH was 50.3
      These numbers are from 2,178 face-offs taken for Janssens (since 1997-98 when the NHL started counting them).
      Combined with his 116 major penalties what Janssens did what pretty unique.
      I would say only ten or so players in NHL history could do what Janssens did and with the same longevity.

    • @Leafsdude
      @Leafsdude 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Worth noting that Graham had retired in 95, JR had moved on to Phoenix in 96 and Chelios had been traded in 98. None of them finished a season on the Hawks with Janssens, who joined in the 98 off-season. That said, I still remember him, Probert and VandenBussche (what a great name) made for a pretty scary 4th line for a good 4 or 5 seasons. Not many centres could play like Janssens did.

    lol Myhres (6'4 220) went after the middleweight Zmolek (6'2 220), taking advantage of the guy who had 229 PIM as a rookie.....yup, sounds like a total mismatch of a goon attacking a skill player, obviously revenge was needed

      I own a Kings Zmolek jersey. Love the guy. All heart but mostly a punching bag. All kinds of tough guys on that Hawks squad--including Probie--and he decides Zmolek is the answer. It was a spot pick for sure which is unfortunate because Brantt was real tough. Much closer to Probert than Zmolek.
      Zmolek is awesome though. His fights are always entertaining and he was an ultimate team guy.

      Ya Chicago had a very tough team during that era. My buddy #28 Mark Bell who played for the Black Hawks for roughly 7 years was drafted in 1998 by Chicago but his first year of pro he was with the Hawks Farm Team in Norfolk but was brought up a few times in 1998 & 1999 he was up & down, I'm not sure if Mark was in the line up during this game? Mark's roomate on the road was Bob Probert. & Doug Gilmour was also his roomate. Another very tough guy for the Hawks was Ryan Vandenbusch.

    Ok you can call me a stick in the mud but I grew up in 60s and used to love a nice fight now and then but it got way too insane after expansion.the flyers and bruins had some good teams but quite frankly the fighting just got boring after awhile. I mean people got tired of the WWF after a while.it was the same old script. The losing team just takes cheap shots once the outcome is evident. There were so many tough guys that the. hockey was pretty sad. I once went to a game on a work night and didn’t get home til 3 am there were so many fights in a 4to 1 game. It was sad

    The major to Janssens was the right call in a 6-1 game because if you allow that type of play it would happen in most lopsided wins.

    The 1999-00 NHL season was one of the worst seasons I ever remember. Not only was fighting way down but so was scoring. Jagr led the league with just 96 points, thats it. Such a boring product the NHL put out that year.

    8:44 in all other situations, those that are not in play should never interfere but that hit from his fellow team mate allowed him to right his jersey and get a visual. I hate anyone who fights dirty and tries to use their opponents jersey or clothing to block someones view, movement and attempt to give themselves better odds in a brawl. That's cowardly.

      Every skater on the ice was thrown out of the game for that fight at 18:45 of the third.
      Probert got a match penalty for intent to injure.
      Chad Brown got a cross-checking major.
      Janssens got a charging major.
      And the goalies each got 2 for leaving the crease.

      @KingBeagle24 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dude it's a local broadcast. If you want objectivity, stick to national games. They're obviously going to cheer for the team that pays them, especially a guy like Pat Foley, who is a Hawks institution.

    • @stevehardman4686
      @stevehardman4686 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KingBeagle24 It is one thing to kind of root for a team, but a broadcaster has to show some degree of professionalism, they can't just lie about what the replay is showing time after time. On the other hand, think we just figured out who taught Jack Edwards everything he knows about broadcasting. If I want 'homer' broadcasting, I'll watch junior A games, by the NHL level should have guys like that weeded out. And they wonder why they can never build a hockey audience in the US, between announcers who tell you one thing when your eyes are watching something else altogether, and referees who call a floating rulebook so you never know what they will call from one game to the next, if this was what I had to watch for hockey when I was a kid, probably wouldn't have been a fan either, I was lucky to have guys like Cole, Meeker, MacFarlane and Dornhoefer calling games when I was discovering hockey

    • @KingBeagle24
      @KingBeagle24 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I remember the offseason of maybe 98(?) when the Hawks could've signed Gilmour or Brett Hull, and they chose Gilmour. By that point, Gilmour was a shell of his former self, but that really spoke to the ineptitude of the front office at that time. Not to say that Dougie was BAD as a Hawk, but it was crystal clear that his best days were way behind him.

    • @TBone12984
      @TBone12984 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KingBeagle24 I think they knew full well when they signed him they weren't getting '93 Gilmour. He still put up decent numbers considering how bad those Hawks teams were in the late 90's. It was also noted that during his time with the Hawks he was oft injured (terrible back) but played through the pain anyways; unlike that sissy Zhamnov.
