Darkwood became my favorite horror game of all time when I played it the second time. It was then I realized how the game still somehow scared me the second time I played. Nost horror games, even the best one, fail to scare me the second time, as I know its tricks, but darkwood remained unpredictable, unsettling, unnerving. It was in my second playthrough I actually tried to decipher and understand the story, and I fell in love. Its blend of slavic horror, dark fairytales, and cosmic lovecraftian horror was beautiful. For fuck sake, darkwood got me to read the snale on the slope by the strugatsky brothers, and it is great. I would be lying if I said Darkwood didnt ruin other games for me. Not just horror, games in general. I recently tried to play signalis, and while I did like it after a second playthrough, and Ithink it deserves the hype, it just couldnt get me to feel the same amount of dread, sadness, and soviet depression that darkwood gave me. Thanks for this video, Im gonna play darkwood for the 6th time. You earned a new sub! Edit: I wanna gush about it a little bit more. The music. Holy hell the music. It is both the most terrifying thing I have listened to (and I play silent hill) and its the saddest, and most meloncholic thing I have ever heard. A little bit if spoilers. The soundtrack that plays when you get past the large tree "the road home" is so sad. It gives off the feeling that you won, but it didnt matter. The music itself was telling you that this isnt real, that this was nothing but a hallucination. The screams of the damned echoing throughout the whole song, they sound like theyre warning you. Begging you to turn back. The song itself is just so depressing. "I've won, but at what cost?" Is the feeling the song gives off. But it also gives off this tired sound. That you just want to rest. Close your eyes, and go to sleep. And that's beautiful. Rant asside, I fucking love this game and think it deserves WAY more praise. More than it already gets right now.
I'm going to go back to it at some point. I'm very much so looking forward to it! I'm not going to lie, I feel like Darkwood did so much right that I will always be comparing other games to it, so I feel ya there. I appreciate you watching the video and subscribing! :) Glad you enjoyed it!
@@thefantasticfiend hey man, keep it up. This channel deserves more. I will watch your career with great interest! Now replay darkwood, you'll notice things you havent before.
I know acid wizard is going on an indefinite break, but some part of me hopes they adds some type of hard mode. Not just one life but more aggressive enemies, and WAY less loot, maybe even double all prices for the traders.
Also don’t forget to check out acid wizards other game, soccer kids. It’s only in alpha and is not a horror game, and takes about an hour to see everything, but it is fun and interesting to see the similarities with darkwood.
Just to point out, the man you kill in the prologue isn't the doctor, it's one of his patients. You can show the item he drops to someone else for more info.
Never have I witnessed the birth of a new hidden gem of a channel so early. Except for DJPeachCobbler's who I believe you'd greatly enjoy his content. Regardless, as for Darkwood, it has certainly thus far been one of my most enjoyable experiences playing a horror game ever. Though the word "Horror" has been somewhat lost for me over the years. To explain my personal experience with Darkwood, I'll have to give some context. For reasons I'd rather not discuss, fear stopped being a sensation that my mind could acutely produce. I can be stratled, I can feel anxiousness and stress, but I cannot become truly afraid nor can I become disturbed any longer by anything I see or hear. Though of course, I understand the emotions on an intellectual level and it isn't as if I'm a psychopath. But thanks to it, I have gained an appreciation and perspective for all things "horror" that I believe few will be privy to. And it's from that angle that I experienced Darkwood. Though I never felt fear nor dread while playing it, what I felt was something closer to the Sublime. I found myself wandering the twisted woods even at night time, soaking in the atmosphere produced by the perfect auditory and visual sensory effects. There was just something about the rotting foliage, fungal growths and the omnipresent, overwhelming darkness fruitlessly and temporarily pushed back by the beautiful and fleeting daylight hours that was near divine. It's hard to describe it, though I'm sure I'm not alone in sensing that solemn sanctity and revelling in it. It was honestly one of the most beautiful experiences I ever had in a game. I've noticed that out of all genres, horror games excel most in scratching that itch for me. Their grotesque and often ugly worlds, textures, and atmophere are paradoxically beautiful to me, enchanting, even.
I cannot state how much I appreciate you saying that. :) I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Your thoughts and experience with Darkwood are fascinating, it really is a beautiful game that made me feel a lot of things too, I want more people to play it. Also I love DJ Peach Cobbler, he's amazing.
As a fellow video essayist, i'm glad you're dipping your toes into the format dude :) the pacing of your edit matches Darkwood itself and I hope you continue to shape your thoughts and video style with future vids.
I use Xbox and dark wood is on gamepass , I tried it awhile back and liked it but didn’t give it an honest shot. After seeing this tho I’m gonna give it another go. In dark woods defense I only played it for like 45 minutes lol. Cool videos btw
A more similar darkwood game would be the last cargo. Its a bit clunky, but its the closes we'll get to a darkwood esque game. Art style is fucking great.
Have you played Darkwood? What are your thoughts?
Legit one of my favorite games

If you love survival and horror, I highly recommend the Metro trilogy. That world is downright immaculate.
