More than a machine, but an instrument? PERKONS HD-01 by Erica Synths

  • Erica Synths makes a bold claim. But companies can't declare their product, an instrument. Rather it's up to musicians and composers. It must stand the test of time. But having said that, Perkons has a lot going for it. This video explores an anatomy of a drum "instrument".

    Thanks for this!
    Definitely some new sounds that inspire.
    Regarding the I/O, you can absolutely run the internal bucket brigade and external FX at the same time. Just insert a TS jack halfway into the FX out. All of the I/O jacks on the individual channels work like this, turning the I/O of the Perkons into quite a versatile patch bay!

    You can set the exact tempo. Top line of lights = 100's, Next Line = 10's Next line = units. Hold shift whilst turning the tempo knob.

    I can't believe you kicked this video off with a bunch of caveats as to whether it was worthwhile reviewing, given many have already reviewed the Perkons. That's one of the most interesting and thought provoking music "gear review" I've seen.

    you had me at listen and emotion...i like the degree of knob-per. and REALLY like having all 4 sequencer tracks visible at all times, unlike so many esteemed boxes that can only show one at any time. Thoughtful and consisely conveyed, as per usual - thank you!

    • @DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE
      @DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the 4 track seq was a big design gamble that I think pays off nicely, to dedicate that much space and buttons to it.

  • @jeremywalker2210

    You can set exact tempo by holding the shift button and slightly turning the tempo knob. This will give you a readout of the tempo across the leds of the sequence buttons.

    Great video. For external effects, if you half plug the sends, you get both the external effects and the BBD. Dave Mech has an explanation in his YT Video.

    I'll probably buy the Perkins HD-01 at some point when there's more of them on the second hand market. It just seems like such a direct instrument. So far, I haven't really heard someone using it to make the type of music I would like to use it for, but I'm quite confident that it could do more than what has been showcased so far.

    I really appreciated this review and perspective. I’ve been on the fence because some say the sound is a narrow style if you know what I mean. The fx in/out opens lots of doors.

    Just bought one, used but still three times the price i think it is worth. Awesome sequencer, i could never get myself to dig into all those "parameter programming" machines (Elektron, TR8S, LXR, Volca Drum), and generally awesome handling - but after playing it for a couple of days i am quite disappointed by the choice of sounds. Maybe i expected the wrong thing, i love bleepy modular style sounds. Despite all those controls and algorithms there are only a few sweet spots that i like.

    • @DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE
      @DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I mean you do pay for the build quality despite it not contributing to the “sound” but having said that, with the physical device, I don’t think you should discount the build quality (Perkons is beautifully made) Having to interact with the Behringer clone of a Moog.. I mean it’s compact, it sounds pretty good (for sure for the price) it’s so flimsy and poorly made, it’s not at all fun interacting with it physically. But yeah…

    Interesting video as always. I always enjoy your 'the voice of reason' approach when discussing modular synths and other software.
    As for the 'I wish it had this/that' discussion, I totally agree. However, making positive suggestions to the designer(s) can be useful, if done in the right way. I've seen a few pieces of equipment that have been updated in their mark II versions, most likely due to comments from testers and users. I've also sent back a few pieces of equipment which lacked when I realised they lacked some key features. On the other hand, I recently bought (and won't be sending back) a module for my eurorack, which is very interesting. However, I'm going to contact the maker and make a few simple suggestions which I think could make the module even more powerful.

    • @DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE
      @DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a fair assessment - no harm at all forming a wishlist. companies have to love dialoging with their user base for sure. I think it just needs to be thoughtful tho. People hate on modular for what it’s best at, which is essentially “cooking” from scratch. But that’s what modular is. So wishlist can be about modular being more like instant chicken soup, right?

      Perkons is much better in my opinion. I could never figure out the snare channel in the pulsar (sold mine). Also, the looper was pretty weak. No patch saving was the deal breaker there. Sorry Soma, it is way overpriced for what you get. I will admit the hi-hat channel was really fun. @@DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE

    Elitist synth. You can get the same sounds with a cheap analog synth or a TB-03 clone like the Behringer TD-3 and its drum machine TD-8. Do everyone a favour and learn how the instrument works so that you can show and articulate what you’re talking about. I mean like “…it has a secret identity….” 😅😅😅😅😅 give me a break man.

  • @michael7018

    I processed a $50 Stylophone Gen X 1 through my Microcosm and got drone textures that sounded so much better than your 3-4K Perkons. I’ve been looking at videos for what this Perkons was all about and no thanks. I can afford it but why should I buy it when my few hundred dollar TB-303 and BEHRINGER TD-8 drum machine sounds even better. Just another elitist toy.

    • @DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE
      @DUNGEONMUSICTHEATRE  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Appreciate the feedback. Yeah I mean, most of us agree expensive doesn’t mean better. Just like some people make hit records with $50 drum sample packs and others spend tens of thousands of dollars recording live drums. I think instruments like Perkons can be a source of inspiration that some people are willing to pay or not. I think It’s quite personal.

      I've had both, sold my Lyra. If you're considering chaining through Lyra effects, that might be redundant. Also, both require hands on deck (improv oriented), so you might find that tricky.
