- I hope you enjoy this video about whether Erica Synths' Perkons is my dream drum machine. It was tremendous fun to play with this wicked instrument, and to record it on video. In the Comments, please share any of your drum machine stories, and let me know if my experience was useful/entertaining for you.

This video was an absolute pleasure to watch. The presentation reminded me of an op-doc on frontline or A&E. I have sold ALL of my drum machines within months of getting them as I always end up finding myself back in the DAW. Circuit Rhythm on the way in the mail today lol we will see how that goes. Can’t wait to watch more of your work!
I know exactly what your problem is , yes I know , disposable income , you simply can afford whatever instrument you want or almost...not a bad thing but if you couldn't afford it you would get stuck with whatever drum machine and squeeze everything out of it , no ?
Totally sums me up pre and now post retirement. I now have more time and hobbies than money, a complete reversal.😢😂
You and I have said and done the exact... same... thing. Every Drum Machine that I have played with is "yes, but... no". My mainstay recently has been a Syntakt, and even that is a bit mostly more, but still... not quite (And for clarity thus far I have owned: RYTM, Drumbrute, DB Impact, TR8S, Electribe II, Electribe EMX-1, DSI Tempest...) And they are all great! But... I've often thought that the solution would simply be making a Eurorack Drum Machine, but that is a very costly venture. The Sequencer alone would be upwards to 4-700 dollars depending on what I could find (a Stillson-Hammer or Maleko Varigate 8+ would be most likely). I just acquired 2 DFAMS which upon first few plays are pretty promising thus far. Maybe pair them with a Perkons?
@@boedye looks like we’ve both had drum machine GAS over the years! I liked DFAM, but I found the sequencer way too limited, didn’t like the little knobs, etc. The Perkons is great, but it’s big, and it doesn’t do any of the classic Roland sounds, which I often want. If I was rich, I’d get the originals, some early Sequential boxes, the Perkons, a Cirklon and… be done with it? 😜
it's MONO? ughghg. This is the main thing keeping me from the DFAM and it's other two units. Totally agree. I usually like panning my hats and other percussive elements. Why does this keep happening. I'm literally begging a company to take my money with a solid drum machine. I don't mind limitations, but stereo is a basic essential in my opinion.
Obvious you are keeping it, it cost $2k with vintage knobs 😂
This is one of the best videos iv seen, i feel completly the same with my drum machines, anf i have alot haha....also really courious to try the Perkons! Please make more vidos like this! :D
each voice has an output, why you say about 1 mono output?
There is one Main Mix Mono output. And, yes, also 4 individual mono outputs.
I think the LFO click and the quantized pitch issues have been fixed in firmware updates, right?
you edited this so well man. Felt like I was watching an episode of a TV show, not a TH-cam video.
Thanks so much for the compliment!
literally, it's like an episode of Forensic Files ☺️
1 mono out ,,, obviously a huge NOOO! how could they,, just a bottleneck for money... and its digital,,, please MK2 now!
I think this is my dream drum machine.
i just recently saw the Perkons with black finish... uhoh
My man! First of all, amazing video. For a smaller channel, producing content this high quality is impressive!
Second, to answer your question at 9:38:
Don't sell any gear! Instead, create a sample library of the Perkons and sell that to pay for the actual Perkons. 😎
Record a ton of kick samples with slightly differ parameters, since we won't be able to configure them ourselves (not having the knobs). But if you tweaked several of your go-to kicks, snares, etc, you would be accomplishing two things: You help pay for the unit this way, and second, you give yourself your own samples to use for when you need tigher production or integration (since you could then tune the sample when needed, or have alternate control over it since its now a wave file). It'd also make it easy for you to put together grooves that might not be so easy on the physical unit itself.
Just subbed! Keep up the good work!
Update: I see that there is one person who has made a sample library of this unit, but he appears to be the only one that I could quickly find. Even so, you still might get sales anyway.
Hey SPN, thanks for the compliment, and for the tip! I don’t think it’s for me, however, as I feel that the Perkons is at its best when knobs are turned in real-time. Now, if I inherited an 808 or 909… sample away, baby!
Loved this video journey of your trip to Perkons and drum synths. For me, the Access Virus TI2 and Elektron Rytm MK2 are perfect balance for live hands on beat making and sounds plus tons of on board effects, amazing sequencer with song mode that lets me save and recall lots of sessions. I can still finger drum too on the Rytm MK2.
The new firmware solves a couple of those I believe....
I have the same obsession as you on synth gear (I have endless playlists for any machine on TH-cam), but probably I do not have the same money of you, so my obsession focuses either on cheap synthesizers or even worse on used synthesizers that cost very little and that fascinate me, and so the obsession also becomes searching the Web for the lowest possible price for that machine. Then when I buy the gear after a lot of research, I use it a little and would like to sell it to buy another one that I almost always saw on TH-cam. Of course, I end up with a lot of small synthesizers that I use very little.
Lately I have been focusing on the Stylophone CMP DS-2 Analog Drone Synthesizer, which will cost rather little, but fortunately for me it will only be available for purchase in the late September of this year. 😏
I think I suffer from severe acquisition syndrome as you or worst. 🙄😏
I think a lot of people can relate to your experience. As long as you’re having fun, is what I say!
At the moment, I'm in the pre-purchase obsession phase. By now I've understood that I have to have it. Any money I spend on a cheaper device would be wasted. I think I can live with the limitations you mentioned, the biggest being mono. But with a ping pong delay on one voice, even that should be manageable.
In the same boat as yourself.....I'm gonna have to fund by selling my xoxbox and waldorf blofeld!
The quality of these vids is fantastic and must take ages. Are you in the media business?
@@philipTOMPSETT thanks for appreciating! Yes, they take a while, but I’m semi-retired… also, I used to be a film/tv composer for decades, have been mixing my music forever. I also taught myself editing over the past 10-12 years, making artistic videos of my synths once in a while on a different channel.
And I’ve also watched a ton of TH-camrs on how to make videos!
This thing seems more like the emperor's new clothes.
Amazing video, LeSynth!! Gives me G.A.S. ❤
"DÉSIREZ PLUS".
thank you stopping my GAS !
Thanks!!!
Great video! I have a Perkons myself and can relate :-) Not being able to name kits and patterns is indeed a limitation. If I heard right you say you can only save 64 kits and patterns. Kits and patterns are stored in Banks, so you can store 64*64 patterns and kits. Finding kits or patterns won't be getting easier though...
Bravo on having this sweet drum machine! Yes, too bad we can’t name anything…
arturia drum machine i think is best out there...its got 1/8 din so can hook it up to that cool eurorack behind you..pads are great for finger tapping and great work flow
Very good angle on the Perkons. You did confirm my fears too. This machine is going to need it's own deck of effects. I'm still scratching my head on the main outs thing. I need to check the manual on the matter. Subbed!
LeSynth Can I not use my DSI Tempest to gate each drum?
Yes, with MIDI Out from the Tempest
I've been using an LXR-02 for a while now and I can't fault it. I'd love one of these, but I can't justify it with that sitting there.
I could never change patches on it without it skipping a beat.
I had issues with it missing timing but it's a swell piece of kit. sold mine for a perkons
I have had a Perkons since Feb 23 and I swear it is the most fun thing I have bought in many years. Sounds fantastic, fits into my music and workflow and 100% hands on! My tip is use voice 2 for kicks!
also the chromatic mode in the new os is INSANE. BEST BASS EVER
Totally agree about voice 2! Yeah, the new update kicks ass!
We have one. What’s that noise gate pedal you use please?
It’s this one, really nothing special: www.amazon.com/AZOR-Noise-Guitar-Effect-Bypass/dp/B07BF8DC35/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Azor%2Bnoise%2Bkiller&qid=1698663328&sr=8-1&th=1
I mean, it's cool to fiddle around with but the sounds are kinda samey, clangy. I also had a Vermona kick and it sounded kinda the same. Not good if you make hip hop, like I do.. but maybe cooler for experimental stuff. It's about what inspires you, though, and it does look cool.
I heard the kick in the store and fell in love but it is so expensive hahahaha. But its awesome.
@@guyclegg it’s still cheaper than a car!
@@lesynthlofi THATS TRUE. I got my bike so its probably fine hahaha
Wow! Superbe vidéo!!
I run each channel into my computer. From there I can pan, add fx, etc. that addresses at least some of your limitations.
Another great video! Been considering a Perkons myself but the high pricetag combined with odd limitations and reports of serious bugs is putting me off. It's possible I'll do like I did with the Syntrx and wait for the 2.
God my first thought when I heard ‘pedal’ was “could that possibly have 1 output?”
Good review 👍 I appreciate knowing stuff like LFO-clicks (ugh)
"I barely noticed the Perkons when it came out. I was busy..." [said in front of an EMS Synthi].
@@JayKaufman hahaha! Nah. It’s cause I was too busy watching videos of a whack of other new goodies!
@@lesynthlofi did I spy with my little eye a Maxi-Korg in the background as well? If so, all you need is a MiniMoog and you've got the 1970s Synth Holy Trinity. Just add a cape!
@JayKaufman good eye!!
@@lesynthlofi thanks. I also have one in my studio but it's rather beat up. It's missing the faceplate, the wooden end cheeks are hanging by a thread and several of the keys are loose. It will eventually be restored to its former glory.
One solution to get you past the single Mono issue is to just buy the Elektron Octatrack and use each of the voice outputs in OT’s A-D. You can pan, use effects, etc. These two are a match made in heaven!
Sorry for me it's the SOMA pulsar-23 but this one is so perfect too 😀
Immediately like your style (or the style of this video)!
It's like a news editorial feature - entertaining, informative, punchy, short
Subbed!
Thanks for your very kind words!!
I does look great. I've stop looking for the Perfect Drum Machine though and now just obsessively collect Step Sequencers, I prefer to scratch build my drum patched on modular. The sequencer to me has become the more important item, it's like a violin bow
Love it. I’m crazy about modular. If I had unlimited funds, I buy a Cirklon or two!
I still have GAS for the Analog Rytm.
Lol I 100% agree with everything you said .. it's so expensive but so much fun to use and explore with .l bu5 it's also got a solid heavy sound . The type of hihat sequences I can make on this thing is outrageously wide and again limitless fun . I love it and I will definitely keep mine.. it will be a stable drum classic in my working lab , (not in my every growing museum of drum machines in the collectors corner of my room ) .
The only thing say /advise is that I use the banks on the Sd card as different beds of experimental ideas .. and once a bank is full of kits and patterns i simple move on to make a new 1 . But on the SD card directory we can name banks ..and back them up in named folders .
Happy to hear you have one and are enjoying it! I also love the hats, especially with some randomness on the band-pass filter. Good tip about saving the banks on a computer.
I’m curious about your other drum machines!
Excellent work! Thank you!!
awesome video
Le Ned!
Hey buddy, it’s been a lonnnnng time! Wishing you the best!
Fattal!!!
amazing video!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
@@lesynthlofi same here subbed to your channel so refreshing to see your thoughts in action. I am a tinkerer as well so Perkons on list and now just need to sell few things in my studio to fund it!
I think you won’t regret making the move!
Fabulous video! The presentation and stylistic elements make it so easy to watch.
Funnn ! Love the Perkons 😊
Me 2, even after 4 months making this video, I still lust after it every day!
thanks for a great video, im keen to try out the Perkon and its good to understand its limitations from your experience :) just wondering have you explored the analog rytm? (with update 1.7)
Sorry, no. My only experience with Elektron was the original Machinedrum, which I think is awesome, but I’m not so interested in menus, preferring hands-on control.
The production on this video… *chefs kiss*!!!!!!
great video... now I want a Perkons
Awesome video! This is a great sounding drum machine and the experience of playing it is probably quite pleasant, but that part about GAS was so true! Also, I mean, look at it!
Awesome video!!
Wow this video is superb! I see this channel blowing up!
I hope your vision about my channel comes true! Thanks for your support.
I like this video well done.
Thank you!
I dont like it. Its like no soul in this instrument.
No machine has a soul unless you put yours into it and let it become an instrument
@@paulackermann6957 good point.
Nope
