- UFC 244 between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal ended in controversial fashion after a doctor stoppage due to cuts around Nate Diaz's eye. This is my reaction as a doctor watching this fight and some important things to consider before judging this outcome.

The product of an echo chamber of personalized content. I don't think it's odd to disagree with someone's video you click on, but there is a certain level of bias. I was on the side of the fight being stopped, because Diaz looked out of it moreso than the cut.
You would disagree with him if you had a different opinion. Sucks you can't think for yourself. Even this guy said it was subjective and didn't say whether he would have stopped the fight.
Fights can be stopped mid round. It shouldn't have been stopped. The cut looked the same at the end of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round. Why stop it then instead of after the first? The stoppage made no sense.
You know that was the same doctor who recently stopped a fight claiming Michael Chandler had a broken leg that ended up not being broken. ( th-cam.com/video/ntea70cLfJ8/w-d-xo.html ) Doctors aren't infallible. They're just people with an opinion, perhaps a more informed opinion but not universally correct. It's OK to disagree with a doctor.

Nate’s thin scare tissue on his face unfortunately may be what ends his career.
This is literally what I said to myself after Masvidal gave that left kick. Nate Diaz needs to seriously address this issue he faced at almost every fight so far.

Nick diaz had the surgery to fix it. He hasn't fought since. Nate alluded to that in the post fight presser.

Yeah, that's the result of being 20-12 w/ 13 of those fights going to decision. Maybe Jorge just outmatched him. I felt Pettis was one of the older guys, so Nate knew how to deal with him. It's really up in the air, but another BMF sports entertainment fight could be the retirement fight he's been looking for.

Good Explanation Doc! In addition I feel a few more points matter :
1)This cut was reopened previous cut(Pettis fight) and the scar tissue doesnt heal well.
2)With the drooping eyelid Diaz couldn't see well from that Eye which meant he cannot defend Strikes coming from line of Vision of the Right Eye.
3)Having 2 cuts right above and below the eye can mean that after suturing there could be tension and incase there is hematoma formation it could compress on the eye and orbital contents.
Felt disappointed as a Fan but Proud as a doctor that the Ringside Doc took the tough call knowing he will get lot of criticism!!

The Doc did what's he supposed to do. Evaluate the damage, then make a judgment. Nate wanted to go on because he is a bmf. stoppage like these are part of the game. sure they are not enjoyable, but as far as i know there are less ring death on mma compared to boxing thus far. lets keep it that way.
0 deaths in the UFC so far. Its because fights are only 5 rounds max tough. If MMA was 12 rounds people would be dying every week.

@@gabydize nates corner knows nates injuries better than doctor. The doctor was doing his job i don't blame him. But imagine knowing nate personally and knowing all about his history with injuries and scar tissues. I think the corner was a better judge here. Nate has been saved by his corner previously in rda fight where they threw white towel. So I'm pretty sure they know better than the doctor about the stoppage.

@John Doe Big fan of Diaz. But he has only gone 5 rounds twice. Lost both. So we don't have evidence that he would've done better in the coming rounds. Diaz would've had to pull something crazy off to get the job done. The fact that he survived the beatdown by masvidal 3 rounds was impressive. He took a soccer kick to the head and still didn't go out.

We all know that Diaz would continue fighting even if his arm came off. But that's not the point. We've got to put our innate animal instinct aside for a moment and take the fighter's wellbeing into consideration. I'm sure he'll be back to give us many more priceless moments and entertaining fights. But for now, he's got to take the L and recover. All credit to Masvidal for coming out so dominant.

He didn't look the same he was breathing more heavy & when the Dr stepped in it pissed me off because it was giving time for rest then like Nate said doc asked if I was ok to continue said yea & he said ok then he went the other way & called the fight off.. some BS.. I mean, Nate hit Masvidal with some shots. But everytime Masvidal hit Diaz it was REALLY impactfull, face and body.
You never know, but I seriously doubt that Nate could've win that match. I think he was going to get KOed.

From what I was seeing in the fight, had Nate not have that big eyelid cut he would eventually have been knocked out or tko’ed. I believe Jorge was going to finish him if not on the 4th round then definitely the 5th.

Thank you! Finally someone who is actually qualified gives their opinion on this stoppage. There's been too many armchair MDs giving their "expert opinions" from fans, media members, and fighters alike.
As another doctor who loves MMA I very much appreciate your videos. They give such a sensible sound balanced opinion on many injuries and issues. For me they also break down medical related topics in an easy way for the public to digest. Great job!!!!!!

Extremely well done, even handed vid imo doc; and the Diaz bros are my favorite fighters. I think one of the things that makes it tough though is that there doesn't seem to be a great deal of consistency when it comes to cut stoppages (and your point about blood loss not equalling severity is noted). A lot of people I think are pointing at Tyson Fury's last one also but I'm far from a doctor so maybe those two cuts were less similar than they at first appear. I certainly don't blame the event doctor though because I do believe he has the health and safety of the human being in front of him first and foremost on his mind.
As much as I'm upset with the fight stoppage, I'm glad you put it the way you did and you shed some light on this situation. I love nate as a fighter and honestly seeing that cut up close and thinking about nate going another 10 minutes of fighting with that cut really makes me think the doctor was totally right to stop the fight and I kinda thank him for that. As much as I would've loved to see if nate could come back, at the same token I would've been mortified to see one of my favorite fighters lose an eye or eyelid on live TV. I know its devastating for nate to have a fight end that way but at least he will be able to recover and go on to fight another day. This time hopefully he takes a good amount of time before hopping into the cage again.
