    I remember my pop playing the Dukes when I was a young boy. Still sounds just as good as I remember!

      Extremely underrated! I think many were jealous of his fame, ...silly.

    Gene’s snare and rack tom heads look well worn.

    • @ytubepuppy
      @ytubepuppy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a specific spot about the size of a silver dollar on the head of his snare at the 4:25 mark that you can tell he has hit a million times with his left stick. I'm surprised that it's so far from the center of the head but maybe that was his "sweet spot" for his sound.

    • @robertromero5294
      @robertromero5294 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Youre absorbent about his sweet spot...I rarely play at the center of my snare, preferring to hit more towards the edge to get a higher pitch in the head...at centre it sounds too deep...and yes I'm sure Gene may feel the same...plus hitting at centre enough is the weakest point of breaking your head...so hittit.ore toward the edge adds sound plus longevity in your head, espwhen they were calf heads ...

    • @joecash4354
      @joecash4354 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I’d bet those were calfskin heads. I played those for the first couple of years I had a set. Those things sounded sweet, but they’re awful to maintain. Temperature and humidity affected them a bunch. I was always having to tweak them.

    That sound meter seems sus to me. Maybe someone today can check the audience levels and compare. I don't think they would have had compression back then.

  • @ytubepuppy

    They don't even make $1,000 bills now. I tried to get one for my wife one year for Christmas but couldn't. Last ones were circulated in 1969.

    This among other reasons is why it's time to celebrate and share the Assunto musical legacy by forming the first legitimate group to do so.... facebook.com/The-Assunto-Dukes-a-Dixieland-Tribute-to-Frank-Freddie-Assunto-609503662748095/

    In top-line jazz, comparisons are meaningless.Two different styles here, reaching different audiences.

    I have the Louis Armstrong Dukes of Dixieland Complete Collection on my iPod. Where was that album recorded? Sounds like a concert hall.

    • @deanoassunto4118
      @deanoassunto4118  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first recordings were in 1959 in Chicago at the Oriental Theatre (Louie felt comfortable there). But 2 things happened, first they were given the wrong list of songs to record and secondly Sid Frey (owner of Audio Fidelity) didn't like the "concert hall" sound of those recordings So since Louie was a Decca artist he got their permission to go to New York (RCA's recording studio) 6 months later and record what would be the "official" release AFSD-5924. Hope that's helpful. Plus we have a web-site www.thedukesofdixieland.com and a FaceBook page: The Origional Dukes of Dixieland which you might be interested in.

      Zack Briggs Thanks Zack....been in touch and working on a few projects such as a book and documentary on the Assunto Family and the Real Dukes of Dixieland. Our first legal case ended in our favor in Nov. 2011 which secured to correct legacy of the Assunto Family but sadly enough we've had to revisit our legal situation again. That issue once completed in March 2015 will afford our Family to move on with our future projects. Wondering Zack...do you play an instrument?

      @TheZackBriggs 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I play clarinet. By ear mostly and as a hobby on occassion nowadays. But always listening to traditional jazz when I have the opportunity.

      @@deanoassunto4118 I presume you are closely related to the Assunto members of the Dukes?
      I'm not knocking the quality of both performances, they are as good as it gets and all first class musicians in their own right. I'm meaning that like for like should have been the format. Quartet v Quartet and Band v Band. Having said that, it would have to be an oustanding quartet and band to beat these legends individualy.
      Maybe that was the point of the exercise. Did the it get any further than the pilot episode?

    Gene Krupa lost! Are you sh*tting me?! But all players get a cool bozo. Even the other drummer, hired from the musicians union just for the night. (The message said, "Dress nice.") Gene was a good sport. Not me.
