Gene had it all...charisma, charm, good looks and could swing.
His strength was not his chops - even though he had them in abundance - rather his musicality. He could take a simple phrase and play it a million ways, all while making you dance!
Gene Krupa was a master painter with those sticks. Others were faster, but they were painting barns while Krup was painting masterpieces. The most musical of them all.

@willy R,Krupa didn’t prioritize in speed,He had it,but didn’t flaunt it often,where as buddy rich prioritized in speed,and had a ego to go with it,he was always just about speed.Buy if you are impressed with speed,watch Joe cusatis who was a peer to Krupa and rich! Watch Romain goulon a today drummer who has incredible speed.
It’s not just about the speed. It’s about the sound…music. We all know about Mr. Rich’s speed…but how about he (and Krupa) drove their bands. Speaking of driving a band…Jo Jones. Lest we forget, we call it “show business,” which implies showmanship. People love (and loved) WATCHING them. They packed the house…every night.

He really had it all. Great drumming ability, swing, hip credentials, good looks, etc. I have since delved into different jazz drummers like Elvin, Philly, Roy Haynes...Krupa though is a guy who I'll always love and respect.

a lesson in dynamics there is enough information in his drumming here to keep any drummer learning and practicing for months and those old Slingerlands sound killer with Krupa behind them
A great drummer but a better guy. He was at one time the name that popped into your head when someone said drummer. He influenced generations of great drummers. Thank you for keeping his memory alive.
No body ever could play drum fills like Gene. He style never rushed and off the accented beats are so natural
@@thomasmolloy5325 A lot of people say that Buddy Rich was a better drummer than Gene Krupa just because he was faster. Buddy Rich may have been faster than Gene Krupa but it doesn't necessarily mean that he was better than him.

@@Hotters9060 In pure technical aspects, there were and are drummers who have more technique, But, in terms of making the drums "fit" into the overall music mosaic of a song, Gene was and is with parallel.

I used to watch Mike Douglas every day after school. He always had a co-host on for the whole week and I ran home every day when Buddy Rich co-hosted. He also had John Lennon a whole week. His show is a treasure trove of famous musicians and celebrities. Thanks for the Gene Krupa segment.
This is actually a great drum lesson-paradiddles, two and three stroke rolls, etc. A true legend!
Gene's got a great feel for swing. Articulate yet attuned with a dynamic creative flow.

Chic Webb was someone Buddy said influenced him, besides Buddy was given a double anointing. He was a drummer from his mother's womb.
Well. For me, as a drummer, it is trying to cop some licks he is doing here. Especially the part at the very beginning, where he is doing something rudimental, I think it is a Flam Tap snare to ride cymbal, which he follows up with a Paradiddle figure on the snare before going into the rhythm with which he states the Caravan theme (snare to both toms).
Gene admitted that he did not have the technical chops of Buddy or Louie Bellson, but he had style, soul, heart, and of course tremendous showmanship! In the '30's and 40's, he had matinee idol/movie star good looks. He was also a nice, humble man.

@@caseygill8336 Gene Krupa was still a good drummer and I don't care what anyone has to say. Just because Buddy Rich was faster than Gene Krupa it doesn't mean that he was better than him at drumming.
Gene was already over his top with some kilos more than in this time, but in this "Caravan" (Duke Ellington, of course) you can see the camels trotting through the sand thanks to Gene's rhythm.
@@Hotters9060 Yes, I agree. It's not just about speed and technique. It's about feel. Gene was a tremendous swinger and time keeper as well.
@@joecaroselli5858 People say that Buddy Rich is a better drummer than Gene Krupa just because he is faster but I think, that is nonsense. Buddy Rich is a good drummer and he is one of my favorites but he is not a better than Gene Krupa in my opinion.
Gene Krupa was a very good time keeper and he was technical behind the drumkit. I also like other jazz drummers like Art Blakeley, Elvin Jones and Pa pa Jo Jones too.
Gene Krupa is a hell of a showman and a very class act, and he can really make them skin sing!!!!!!!
And, he was a great person. Used to play at his house in Yonkers while my dad Benny Moten played bass with him. Legend!!!
When Mike went on the drum riser he said to Gene "when I talk to you I should beat off" ! Now that is a real fan...LOL

Nice understated comment....you're a master (I won't say at what....LOL). He should have said "count off," I'm sure you know that. Hard to say if it was inadvertent or an intentional joke. I'm guessing scripted joke, especially given the follow up scripted rap. If scripted, really gutsy. If inadvertent, Fruedian.

Wow! And yes Mike Douglas is a singer. When you tube works magic this is the perfect example. Never seen. I was a kid in 1966. Very nice. And Gene is a gentleman and excellent percussionist!

Often if you concentrate too much on technique you lose feel. Gene had the greatest feel of any drummer of his era. Along with plenty of technique to express himself.

Gene Krupa, My favourite! Just oozes rhythm.
Buddy could out-speed Gene and out-technique him, but nobody could play the toms like Gene.
The tenor saxophone player was identified by Mike Douglas on a show from 1965 as Carmen Leggio. Krupa also played with Eddie Shu on tenor at a jazz festival in Evansville, Indiana eight months later on November 6th. In 2018, Dot Time records released a CD of eight tunes from that appearance.

One of the greatest drummers to ever play for us.
I really loved Gene's very tasteful trading two and one measures with Mike on "Cute." He just played with such restraint and understated coolness along with delicious humor! It was such a joy to watch. Mike Douglas was also a fine singer, and had such a nice way about him. My Mom loved him.
Joe Caroselli played with restraint...best observation I read.
One more thing, watching him play I always thought was like watching a Master chef make a kick ass dish. 🙂🥁

Hate to say it but, Buddy Rich was far Superior as a Drummer! It’s not even up for debate! Unfortunately, Rich was a Big Time JERK!

Love him, I feel he is often underrated
He's #1 of all time dude. By definition there's no way to underrate #1. Unless you think his cred should transcend time, but since time is his business if he transcended time then he would be "beyond" time, then he wouldn't be a great keeper of time would he? I feel it's only you that underrates him. Everyone else thinks he's #1.

My wonderful memory of Gen Krupa was here in DC that was around in the early 60s at the show boat lounge I was about 10 or 12 years old and my mom and grandma took me to see him he was wonderful and happy to get to see him before he died I will never forget that

He asked the woman he was dating at the time, Marie Allison, who she thought was the better drummer between himself and Buddy Rich. She told him she thought Buddy was the better. drummer. In 1953, she became Mrs. Buddy Rich.
I finally got to see the lyrics to Cute after all these years.
I played that song in the SUNY jazz band back in 1994 but couldn't get any reference to it outside of the music chart.
I drummed it at a intercollegiate judged competition with the band relatively close to the form, but loved the vocals to bring it to me, as it was more intact like that between the drum breaks to the phrasing of the vocals
He was certainly better than when he battled Buddy on the Sammy Davis, Jr. show on February 25th of the same year. On that show, his playing seemed a bit discombobulated - for want of a better term. My thoughts were that he was somewhat intimidated going up against Buddy in a drum battle on national television. From what I've read elsewhere, whenever they got together, Buddy usually held back in order to not embarrass his good friend. That certainly wasn't the case that night, however.

Great performance by Gene Krupa. Sax player has the melody for Caravan wrong, though. The actual ends of those phrases aren’t straight chromatic scales.

Watching many drum performances over many years, then watching the legend, Krupa...who needs "a thousand drums" when playing when a real master like Gene Krupa could make wonderful beat with just the classic "trap drum set " of his famous white pearl Slingerlands he performed on.
1. Shorthand for laughing out loud, LOL is an abbreviation used in online chats or posts to indicate that the writer finds something humorous. LOL is also less commonly short for lots of laughter and laughing online and is also often substituted by LAL, LAWL (laughing a whole lot), LOLZ, LUL, and LULZ.
Finally, LAWL is also used as a slang term that phonetically spells out "lol" and is said in real-life or over VoIP.
Buddy Rich was definately the better of the two technically wise, and for raw power, but for some reason or another I prefer Gene Kruper's beats better. It's like comparing two guitarists, Jimi Hendrix, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Yngwie is obviously the faster of the two and is most probably more technical, but Jimi Hendrix is always considered the world's greatest guitarist.
When we practice, remember to include smiling! Watch Gene's smiles - infectious!

Trooper was a good friend and a great teacher I learned a lot from him before he passed. And I still listen to all of his recordings. 🥁

Ringo was using Ludwig and making the most money..!!
Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but I guess you could also flip this around and say when Gene was the bees knees, making gobs of money, and probably bagging Hollywood stars / starlets, Ringo didn't even exist yet!

Gene Krupa was the Elvis Presley of the drums. He combined great talent with showmanship and appealed to both musicians and the the general public. My father saw Gene perform in Providence,RI. After the show my dad went across the street and into a small cafe. Minutes later, who walks in but Krupa himself. My father shakes his hand and compliments his performance. Gene sits down and has a hamburger and coffee with my dad.

At age 14 I was playing drums with a high school big band at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1981.Buddy Rich was the headliner, and I was able to hang out with him for a while. He gave me his autograph and encouraged me to keep playing. He was very nice. When I mentioned Gene Krupa, Buddy said
Gene was a true pioneer of jazz.
