    This was what I've been wondering for a while. My problem is that I didn't realize that I should only use running shoes for running (stupid I know).. But I just figured "Hey, if they're built for running I can probably do anything in them" so I would walk around in them, run in them, go to the gym and do squats in them, I even used them to dig out a shit load of tree roots... Stomping on the shovel and whatnot...And then I wonder why my feet/knees hurt when I try to run in them after 6 months. I kind of just brushed it off as a symptom of getting older. So I did an experiment and started wear 3 of my old pairs of shoes just around the house or to the store or something, and I noticed that each shoe would make something different hurt. Like 1 pair would make the arch of my foot hurt, one would make my big toe hurt after a while, and the other would make my heel hurt. Then I got a new pair of Brooks and all of those pains went away. I guess I just had to learn the hard way 🤷 So lesson of the day: don't be like me lol

    I bursted out laughing when you said lawn shoes. Aside from running, cycling, and triathlon, one of my other hobbies is vegetable gardening. I use worn-out racing flats for gardening and mowing the lawn. There's nothing like working in the yard/garden with no socks and very light shoes on you don't have to worry about cleaning afterwards 🙂.

      I like to think of my shoes like Andy's toys in Toy Story. I always feel bad when I retire a shoe to lawn duty. It must bring them must shame in the shoe pile.

      It's always a sad day when the shoes get retired. I want someone to come out and play taps for them.

    350+ for sure is a good standard.
    It's also worth saying dont be scared to cut something short and ditch it if you have to. For whatever reason I had a pair of shoes when worn with my custom orthotics I was suddenly supinating and caused my peroneals to flare up. Ditched 'em at 300 miles.

    When the foam and cushion wears down is when I consider them dead. Usually around 300-400 miles

    I walk aproximately 3 miles a day. 90 miles a month. Just partially job on my dailly miles.
    My nb 1080 were done in 5 months. And I used another pair in some days.
    Very confortable the 1080 but I feel they wear down quicker than other shoes.
    Nevertheless would buy them again

    Do shoes expire even when you don't run in them? For example, I have an Alphafly and I plan to save it only for race days, but then I end up using it maybe once in 2 or 3 months. Would it lose it's responsiveness even if I don't use it that often?

    I could really use the advice of if I need to chase my shoes as i have a half marathon in 2 weeks.
    I have less than 300 road miles on my current pair but there is creases in the midsoles and stitching has come about in the same area although it still feels spongey.

    When I start to develop pressure points that I have not had before in those shoes and it is affecting my knees and lower back, I know it is end of the road for the pair.

    Thanks for great info. If a running shoe lasts 500 miles till it's dead, how long does it last if you only use the shoes for walking? Also does the shoe last longer depending on your weight? So a 140 pound runner gets more life than one 225? Thanks.

    I’ve read how compression can take 24 hrs to decompress. I’ve also read this is a fallacy. Thoughts?

    Third question, what about the life of running shoes in storage or not being used very much. Like I have a pair of New Balance 880s v11 that are in a real cool red color that I use for long races, and that's all I use them for. So they're probably a year-and-a-half old but maybe only have 75 miles on them. Do running shoes deteriorate sitting on the shelf indoors?

      Good question. I think it depends on the material of the sole. EVA tend to age and lose its performance just over time.

    is heel bruising caused by a specific way of moving, so like pronation or whatever?
    I get a bruised heel which turns into plantar inflammation which turns into taking weeks off at a time. I used to run on the balls on my feet but had horrible back and hip pain so I switched to a more natural gate and now the heel and plantar pain is more debilitating than the back pain ever was.

    Found it informative. Do the old shoes that were not even used go bad ? I’m asking about like new shoes but 3-4 years old model?

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes! After just a year in the box, the glue and rubber in the shoes begin to deteriorate. It's one of the many reasons brands drop prices quickly on older models. They don't want to send old shoes out that will fall apart inside out a few months!

    I have a severe supination issue on my right foot when I run, so the front right side of that right foot wears down much sooner than the other parts of the shoe and the left shoe. Its such a pain, because it develops very quickly. I have dealt with it by using some shoe goo and applying some of it to that right side to try and build it up again. I've had some success helping my running shoes last longer doing this. Have you ever tried it?

    Here's a question, I wear custom orthotics to correct being almost flat-footed. How would having a custom orthotic insert affect the life/feel of a running shoe?

    • @youpigirl5731
      @youpigirl5731 ปีที่แล้ว

      je pense que l'insert d'orthèse ne change rien à l'usure des chaussures, juste une perception moindre de votre part de cette usure. Vos semelles extérieures s'useront comme les autres chaussures, ainsi que l'amorti. J'ai porté 1 mois des orthèses de correction et j'ai trouvé que cela n'apportait pas vraiment plus d'amorti ni de rebond. Donc je ne les porte plus. Si vos orthèses sont sur mesure, la durée de vie de vos chaussures reste égale au port de chaussures sans orthèses

      Tough question without more info. I would say at our shop in the past few months, we have seen a lot of success with the Hoka Gaviota 4/Hoka Arahi 6 depending on your level of cushion preference. The Gaviota is the more cushioned and supportive of the two.

    Miles ran add 100x age of shoes. If this exceed 400 , time to change your shoes.
