The most concise information on this topic I've seen anywhere. The shoes I'm wearing now are worn out...no wonder my legs and feet hurt. They look OK but fail the tests shown.
Well thanks for the information. My mid soles are completely exposed in places and the heel counters for both are completely out of balance. I thought my leg pain was simply from my high mileage. Glad I found your video!
Really helpful and interesting video, thanks for taking the time. I've always been somewhat sceptical of shoe manufacturers claims that you need to replace your shoe every few miles (they would say that wouldn't they!). :o) It's great to get some independent info on what to look for when a shoe starts to fail.
Good information! What about midsole compression wrinkles? I read a lot about this but it is not in this video? Are these not as important as a lot claim them to be?
I need advice guys! I had this pain in between the outside and back of my left calf for a LONG time, even after I stopped running. I stopped for a while and eventually the pain went away and I was back to 100%. After a couple months at 100% I decided to join the military. Long story short, I decided it would be a good idea to run to get ready for the military training and after 2 miles the pain is back. It's not as bad but I really don't want to make it worse and risk screwing up my future in the military. The thing is, all this time I had been running with the same shoes and I have hardcore inward tilted steps, the insides of my shoes get worn out bad. Could this be the problem? I'll be getting new shoes to see how it feels, but what do you guys think? Has anyone had this kind of dull ache in their calf that lasts FOREVER? I don't think it's shin splints because it's off to the side of my leg, but idk. Any advice would be great, I have an epic future ahead of me in the Air Force special forces but if I can't freaking run then idk what the hell I'm gonna do with my life... =(
i would have to disagree on not using shoes worn to the foam. nike is making lousy shoes with only the foam, which only last barely a few weeks, and have continued to remove rubber soles from almost all of their running shoes. also, on the grey shoes, you said that the center is thinner than the surrounding parts. that's generally the way all running shoes are made, even more so from the vibram barefoot shoes. the problem is that almost all running shoe manufacturers are cutting extreme corners and making poorly designed shoes on purpose, so that profits can skyrocket. luckily, nike does provide a 2 year warranty on the shoes, so you have a possibility to return the bad ones for a new pair.

Is it okay to stop using worn shoes for running, and just wear them for walking?

300-500 miles is NOT some "arbitrary" number. That's a big gap.
