      Image stabilisation doesn’t appear to to work for me as I can have unstable images at 1/125 of a second never mind 1 to 2 seconds hand held. I don’t understand the stabilisation hype.

    Handheld down to 2 seconds is impressive image stabilisation. Micro 4/3 has a completely different way of shooting. Sharper at wider apertures than larger sensors lets more light in and enables lower iso. I find the quality for macro better than larger sensors.

    Another very well done video. What I really liked were three things you mentioned. 1. The context behind the shot. Can this camera produce usable results in these conditions....yes. 2. The effects of 5-axis image stabilization. The fact that M43 camera can shoot at lower ISO which negate any argument about high ISO performance. I actually am not even sure what my high ISO performance is on my PEN-F or M1!! Why? Never need it!! I'm well aware of my Nikon high ISO performance because I always need it...anyway.... 3. Your sample photos included images with a VERY low cost kit lens. And holy smokes, those were amazing images! Nice work....again!

    I've been shooting Olympus since 2009 and am always amazed at how often reviewers fail to take real world conditions into account. Most of my shooting is either at events or while hiking, so the real world effects me a lot! I've taken waterfall long exposures handheld while on hikes

    7:45 AND the higher you push the ISO, the more dynamic range you lose ;-) This is another thing I liked about m4/3 for my type of shooting. I'm not shooting sports or fast action, so I can easily get away with a slower SS to keep my ISO lower. I can get by with 1/15 on my FF mirrorless (Z7 and a7R III before that) but beyond that it starts getting risky (chance of blur if I can't stay steady enough). With my E-M1 Mk 3 I can get by with an even slower SS.

    NEXT CHALLENGE: Can Olympus EPL 9(or10) Perform In Professional Shoots?
    I have Epm2 and Epl9 both are compact camera, some people are just not interested with OMD dslr looks. Will it be possible in the future you make more videos of Olympus Pen Series?

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      E-M10 series maintained the shape of a DSLR, with proper hand-gripping area, and featuring an electronic viewfinder. Also, E-M10 has twin command control dials, mimicking efficient camera settings adjustment on the fly just like using a professional camera.
      E-PL series cameras lack all these, and will be extremely difficult to use in challenging shooting environment. Handling, having an EVF and direct access to important exposure settings will make or break the shot.
      I'd reserve the E-PL line for casual shooters.

    If the only difference is about new filter and silent shutter for P, A, M dial modes, then it could be achieved by firmware upgrade probably. I'm not going to change from old mark III. I want my firmware upgraded.

    • @puch7283
      @puch7283 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same dude, up there is my comment about mark III, and how they ripped us off.

    • @RobShootPhotos
      @RobShootPhotos 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm glad to have the E-M10 mark II because it had that ability in silent mode. However the electronic shutter mode in all settings isn't the only thing they took out of the Mark III. Clean HDMI output, Histogram value adjustments and exposure shift.
      I understand that they made electronic mode so you didn't have flickering or banning and they simplified the menu system to make it more user friendly.
      On the other side, I think they pulled features to make a bigger gap between the higher end models. Actually they took clean HDMI out of the E-M5 with the mark III so you have to buy the E-M1 line. So I question the making it more user friendly aspect. Maybe they got called out for the change with with electric shutter between E-M10 II and III but I agree, firmware update would be better.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Olympus never provided any firmware updates to add features in E-M10 series cameras. Do you know how much money it is to create a firmware update? It is cheaper to make a new camera.

    • @WojciechPaciorkowski
      @WojciechPaciorkowski 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure it is cheaper to develop for already existing hardware, cause you already know it. But Olympus prefers to sell the same product again as something new and it is sad.

    • @RobShootPhotos
      @RobShootPhotos 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robinwong this is very true. You can easily see the lack of firmware updates to add features on other brands but they will incrementally upgrade to a new model. I know Canon got called out on their M-50 mark II but they have been doing this for years with the Rebel and more frequently.

  • @cowboybebop3322

    I think that every camera (mft, apsc and ff) that is made in last 5 to 10 years used by competent professional can perform more than good enough for any purpose. Thing is that if one needs camera for pro use, for the money best option is aps-c, no compromises FF and mft for those who are willing to pay same money and compromise IQ and even more DR and ISO capability in favor of ergonomics. So, it is more important who is taking images rather than what camera he/she is using. Robin can take better images with MFT than i ever could with my APSC or FF. He is a pro, for me photography is a hobby and that is bigger difference than Olympus OM-D E-M10 vs Sony a1.

    4:13 This is basically what I try to tell people in gear discussion forums, but they're too busy whining acting like a fool, honestly. They never show any of their own photos, while I have galleries full of beautiful photos I've made in real life on vacations, etc...with m4/3 (and other cameras). I took a GH5 on vacation to Yellowstone and many other places and was super happy with the results. I never felt like I was missing anything and wasn't freaking out and falling back to a FF camera I brought as a backup. Other than one of two shots (literally), I never touched my FF Nikon on that trip. Anyway, maybe you can't be too harsh on people that complain since you need to keep your channel classy, but I'll say it myself...those people that disparage smaller format cameras and have nothing to show themselves to prove that they know what they're talking about, well...they're idiots with an agenda or simply a small, small mind. It's time for them to grow up, mature a little (and show us some real photos/art, instead of just crying all the time. :)

    The problem with using a entry level camera for professional work is the lack of a second memory card and many have a low buffer and a max 1/4000 shutter speed.

    I bought this camera for my daughter as a birthday present. While trying it out to educate her of the many possibilities, I actually ended buying one for myself. As for the IS, I've shot handheld at 40mm and 2.5 to 3 seconds, resulting in razor sharp images. Besides that, I am able to compare the images to those of my Nikon d600 and was impressed by the high ISO performance, but I couldn't take satisfying handheld shots of 2 seconds with the Nikon... Although I rely on the d600 for ultimate results, this little diamond is quite a workhorse, especially with the excellent Zuiko glass, which performs just as good as Nikon's best lenses. Don't be fooled by the 16Mpx, even compared to the 24 of the d600.

    It wasn't directly covered in this video but I couldn't remember which video covered it. In the E-M10 settings, when IS-On is enabled you are able to then set the focal length. I know you said it isn't necessary to set for AF lenses because the camera will communicate with the lens and adjust accordingly, but I noticed that when set for my MF Rokinon 12mm F2.0, now when I use any of my AF Olympus lenses it still shows as 12mm in the IS settings. Should this automatically adjust to my Olympus 25mm F1.8, for example? Do I leave it at 12mm for future use with the Rokinon but it wont affect use of my AF lenses? Set it to zero until I use the MF lens again? I thought I would see that number change automatically when using Olympus AF lenses.

      Olympus has never provided feature upgrades for E-M10 series cameras via firmware updates. I don't think that is going to change. Olympus has been consistent so far. The big firmware updates are for E-M1 and E-M5 series. And you have no idea how much each firmware update costs, making a new camera is cheaper. I am not kidding.

    Have you or any of your viewers tried both this camera and the mark iv.
    I have decided to get one of them but not sure which.
    The mark 3 is not quite but nearly half the price of the mark 4.
    Obviously the mark 4 is better but by how much? You say much better but would i actually notice if i put two images side by side.
    I went from 12mp to 20mp with my bridge cameras and it was a big difference. The 20mp nikon was very sharp but then I think my fz330 had a duff lense. It was very soft.
    Ideally id like a 20mp camera but is it really that much of a difference.

    Were the images you posted sooc? Did you need to use post software such as Topaz de Noise. Can no longer agree that face recognition is something not needed on every Olympus body; my MK II has it, why is it not on this? "'new" camera.
    JIP just has to keep up with features that are now basic with most cameras being sold new now.
    It is just a cop-out to make these excuses in a market where JIP took over the smoking wreck of the Olympus camera division.

    I have OM-D E-M10 Mark III and i must say im disappointed and embittered. My friend's omd 10 mark II is way better than my mark III.
    Why did they software locked all options? No small focus, cant change shots per seconds, no full control silent mod, no re focus in auto multi shots modes, no wired shutter release available, and many many more.
    The must disgusting thing what olympus has done is software locked every "semi-advenced" option, everything what we had in mark II is gone.
    They could simply "fix" mark III releasing firmware update and letting us have mark ii's options.
    I realy regret buying mark III, i should have bought mark II or go for sony alpha.

    • @RobShootPhotos
      @RobShootPhotos 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I have both and see the difference. Also no Clean HDMI output, Histogram value adjustments and exposure shift.
      Simplified and more user friendly or making a bigger gap between the higher end models? I got the E-M5 III thinking it would have clean HDMI output since it's a higher end model, like the older model, but it's only available in E-M1 line now.

      @@puch7283 maybe but you would be surprised how many brands have done similar things. They build a model that "overachieves" and they dial it back on the next version. I've seen Samsung even take away a feature with a firmware update.
      The basic entry level photographer most likely won't deep dive into these features and a more advanced photographer may not even look at an entry level camera for those features. However, it becomes disappointing when you used the features and it's not there in the next version.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Responding to the first comment by Puch.
      E-M10 Mark III has a lot of advantages over E-M10 Mark II. To say that "your friend's E-M10 Mark II is way better" is not a correct statement.
      E-M10 Mark III has much more powerful 5-Axis IS, significantly steadier, I can go down to 2-3 seconds hand-held easily. That is not possible with E-M10 Mark II.
      E-M10 Mark III has 4K video, which is a huge upgrade over E-M10 Mark II, that alone sets the E-M10 Mark III to a different category altogether.
      E-M10 Mark III features the newer and more powerful Truepic 8 processing engine, vs the older Truepic 7, you can easily see the difference in video and overall color rendering/noise handling/sharpness optimization, there is a noticeable improvement.
      The AF algorithm has also been reworked, you get the cluster area AF which E-m10 Mark II does not have, and 121 AF points, which are more sensitive vs the older 81 points.
      I am not saying your complains are not valid. But you clearly know all these before you made the purchase.
      1) no small focus points - the default focusing box is already very, very small, and is more responsive and sensitive in terms of speed/accuracy vs the older E-M10 Mark II's smaller AF point. You are NOT missing anything in the new E-M10 Mark III. In fact the AF is a big upgrade.
      2) can't change shots per second - does this change the outcome of the photographs you have taken? Seriously?
      3) No full control of silent mode - people don't even know where to find the silent mode in E-M10 Mark II! Trust me, I have been asked millions of times. At least in E-M10 Mark III, people can find it easily in the AP mode.
      4) refocus multi shot mode - I seriously don't understand what you are talking about. I refocus my shots ALL the time
      5) No wired release - the world has gone wireless. Time to move on.
      6) Many more - seriously? All the tiny complains, while I acknowledge you must be annoyed, but they are hardly dealbeakers.
      E-M10 Mark III, overall is a better performing camera than E-M10 Mark II. The upgrade in processing engine, 5-Axis IS, video capability and AF are enough reasons to justify it as a better camera! If you want MORE upgrade, why not go for E-M5 Mark III, or the E-M1 Mark III? Looking at E-M10 Mark III as an entry level OM-D, it offers a lot for the price you pay.
      To use the word "disgusting" - seriously? Just because you disagree and cannot understand certain decisions made by others, does not give you the right to call them disgusting. If this camera does not suit you, I am sure you are not lack of options to choose from.

    Hello Robin, a bit out of the topic question (and for anyone else who happens to read this), have you ever had a very bad confrontation while doing street photography?
    It happened to me a couple weeks ago, I was taking candid photos of a troupe of people dancing in public, a very lovely bunch, and great action shots. Then a moment later, a young lady came at me, asking why I am taking photos. I explained to her the concept of street photography. She was extremely aggressive and her tone was judgemental, it made me feel like a creepy rapist or something. I offered to delete the pictures if it makes her uncomfortable (she wasn't even on them!), but even then, she was so extreme with the cussing and swearing, almost getting physical, pinching me with her finger while being aggressively accusatory. I mean, I was just taking pictures of happy people! NOTHING could have prepared me for that avalanche of hostility!
    Ever since that encounter, I haven't touched my camera :( It was such a "traumatic" experience (i know, that sounds intense, but that's how it felt in the moment) that it has almost killed my passion for photography.
    I hope to read some advice and personal experiences I could relate to. Thank you so much, people.

    That 16mp sensor is as good as Canon’s aps-c sensor. Unless you need good AF for tracking moderately fast to very fast moving subjects or weather sealing I have not doubt it can do the job.
