I know I'm 6 years late here (I am interested in buying this camera second hand) and I have to say, what a great all-around, to the point, informative video, no extra sauce, no unnecessary cuts with lame jokes, great effort on making sure that even the novice can understand the product, sir, your work is delight to my mind, eyes and ears. Thank you.

I always feel that at the end of one of your reviews I have the facts, pros and cons, and your feelings on those which, all the same, you do not use to batter the viewer to your conclusion (unlike lots of other reviewers). Thank you.
    Oh, and nice oranges!

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. In the end, the choice of a camera depends on your style and the photographs you plan to take. I'm certainly not capable of making a recommendation for anyone except myself - so I try to point out all the of issues I find valuable in making a decision. For some people it's features, for others it's usability and that's where I had issues with the E-M10-3 - great features, terrible usability.
      Sunkist.

Thank you, sir! This is the most comprehensive review and demonstration I have seen. I'm getting this camera tomorrow and I am sure I'll be referencing this video over and over and over. Yes, the menus are pretty horrible, but after the learning curve it can't be beaten for the price to performance value! I just received a new one today. It took about a half an hour to set it up the way I like it for stills, which is why I bought it. I also got the 12-40 f2.8 lens, which is as heavy as the body is!! I have been shooting for a long time, but do not have the patience for complexity and deep menus. It seems to work well, fits my right hand better than any other small mirrorless camera does, my fingers naturally rest on the shutter button and dials without moving my grip. I prefer the tilt screen vs a flip out screen, the EVF is good enough and the build quality is better than I expected. All for not much money compared to almost anything else. I just sold all of my Panasonic gear except the G85, which I intend on using for video mostly. Now to get a 17mm prime, a 30mm macro, and a telephoto. Thanks for your review, a most excellent and complete one.

I picked this camera up in October. I agree that the movie settings were hard to find at first but there is a lot of options once you dig in. The video quality was surprisingly good, the stabilization is amazing. Thanks for this video, it answered a lot of questions of some of the features. It's also nice to see Toronto in these scenes. I'd recommend the camera but wished the software allowed more customization in the different modes. This may have been a choice to help intuitiveness but would limit users as they grew with the system.

What a great review! I subscribed! I bought this camera and absolutely LOVE it! It’s so small and I love the art filters. Grainy and Sepia are my favorites. The IBIS is incredible, and did I mention it is TINY?? This paired with the 17mm 1.8 are my “goto” for street and travel photography.
I do agree the menu can be frustrating. They did separate some menu items that should be placed together. Your great review helped me learn how to navigate the menus much better!

Nice review....I chose the E-M10 Mll over the lll for its metal body and feature difference and great price with a better kit lens for $449 USD. There IMO is no other camera in this price range that gives you a decent IQ and feature set. While no camera is perfect Olympus keeps it's zen. My example is fast to touch focus in all modes. While this is a complicated camera with it's limits, it becomes second nature with use (like any camera). Its a great complex camera that is very capable and a great tool for fun photography. Olympus ZEN :)

I know a6300 has a bit better image quality, and video is much better (d-logs etc), but I just found a6300 will be unusable for my shaky hands without gimbal, especially with it's rolling shutter. Olympus gives me the possibility to make stable videos from hand. I'm thinking of buying this camera for video purposes. Right now I am filming with my phone, Huawei P30. Mostly in nature. But I'm thinking this camera would provide me more functions and higher quality, in terms of videography. The stabilizer, small size and image quality is what's drawing me.

Well, lots of negatives here, but I've looked at some very high quality shots on Flikr and equally high quality videos which show some lovely natural colours and beautifully sharp footage equal to the comparable and excellent GX80/85. I think both are fantastic cameras for the price. We get so used to "features" and deep menu tweaks and sometimes that obscures the most important thing : The IMAGE. I think there are a lot of harsh comments here about almost everything except the pictures!

Silent mode is not fully configurable probably to not complete with E-M5 and E-M1. I hope I can live with Programmed aperture and shutter. Thank you for the in-depth and no-BS review. This camera is at the top of my - still not concrete - list. I bought a Canon 350d in 2006 and an Olympus Pen ep3 in 2013 because the Canon didn’t have video. I want to improve my technical skills without spending any more than this costs in 2020 and without adding weight of DSLR cameras. I don’t care for vlogging, but I do wish I could print larger than a 16mp can produce.
Would you still suggest this as an ideal camera for me? The IBIS is a huge plus.

It's a difficult choice. The selection of m-mount lenses is very limited compared to M43, but if you have older EOS lenses and an adapter, you might be all set. The larger sensor on the Canon might make a slightly higher quality image. If you have experience with either brand, you might prefer its menu system.
In the end, the differences are small, you can choose with your wallet, your hand (which fits better) your sense of design and brand preference.

Hey Maarten, thank you for the detailed review. I am a novice photographer looking to buy first camera outside point and shoot cameras. I have never owned a DSLR before. In your opinion, which camera would be a better choice for me - Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III or Canon EOS M50 or would you recommend something else? I was considering going for Nikon D5600, but thinking maybe mirror-less is the way to go forward. Any input would be helpful. Thank you!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

All three are good choices, depending on your specific needs. If you are shooting mainly stills, the Nikon may be the more flexible choice with the best selection of lenses. For video I’d prefer the Olympus with its superior stabilization. Mirrorless has lots of advantages, particularly for video, but may not be for everyone. Until Canon increases the m-mount lens selection, it’s hard to recommend the M50, which is otherwise a solid and light choice.

I need to upgrade my 'old' camera anyway, the black paint from the metal frame that holds the mirror is getting off the surface and constantly gets on the mirror and the matrix which is annoying. I guess it has something to do with the lack of weather-sealing of that body. I realise that Olympus EM10 III is not weather sealed either. My Olympus choice was mainly driven by the size and relatively low cost lenses. I can get it with three lenses (pancake 14-45mm, 45-150mm and 45mm f1.8) for £550. Do you think Sony A6400 or A6100 would be a better choice. It is twice as expensive (at least here in the UK) as the Olympus model reviewed here, but its autofocusing system is so tempting.

At 14:30, there are a lot of focus point on the same object, however on my EM10 II there is always only one focus point being shown, may I ask what setting changes that?

What is the camera strap you’re using? It looks ideal!

Nice review! I’ve tried reading the comments...so you would recommend the Sony a600/6300 over this if primary need is photo not video?

      I could always recommend the A6000 and/or A6300 - I own one of each.

I'm currently debating between this camera and the Panasonic GX85 as my first mirrorless. Do you have any thoughts on the relative strengths of the two?
I see in this video you're not such a fan of the Oly, and you seem pretty enthusiastic in your GX85 review, but I'm wondering why you might pick the GX85 over the Oly in a direct comparison, if that would even be your choice.
I've been using point and shoots for years, mostly for travel and hiking and always valued pocketability... thus, small and light w/EVF are key for me.
Personally, they seem to be almost identical in features. I love the look of the Oly and it's live comp modes seem fun but I'm afraid of the paired down other features. No custom "myset" modes, button customization limited to the point of being nonexistent, very confused by inability to access drive mode in HDR, BRK, or exposure over 60"...can't use 2 sec self timer to eliminate shake from pushing shutter. I'd almost want to get the mark ii instead but the improved grip really does make a difference, and I feel the add-on grip of the mark ii adds too much bottom bulk. Also there's 4K..while video isn't important to me other than the intriguing idea of using 4K video to pull 8mp stills...still not sure if GX85's implementation is gimmick or value added and could I just do the same with 4K vids from the Oly. I love how customizable the GX85 is.

What are your primary photo/video needs? Although both are good cameras, in the end too many little things about the EM10-3 just got to me. My current favourite is the X-T2 (with the battery grip) but my primary use is video.

Thank you so much for responding so quickly! I shoot photos almost exclusively. And I value something light and compact that won't bog me down on a hike or trek. I like shooting landscapes and moving water as well as architecture, graffiti, and some street photography when traveling (which I do often). As a physicist and astronomer by training, I am interested in playing with astrophotography and long exposure now that I'm buying a more capable camera. The compactness is what's drawn me toward m43. That, combined with the price of Fuji lenses has ruled Fuji out despite the IQ.
With regards purely photographic considerations, are there any particular quibbles or gems you think I should look at more closely in either the GX85 or the em10 iii?

All of these cameras should be suitable, and any camera that has a bulb mode will be able to take long exposure night sky shots (not my area of expertise). However, the E-M10-3's live time and live composite features make it easier to see what you're getting as you take the photo.

Your criticisms of the E-M10 were probably somewhat deserved, but you miss the point, in my opinion. I've paired mine with a Zukio 14-150mm lens and the complete package is tiny and weighs almost nothing compared to similar cameras. As a hiker and amateur travel photographer, I don't think I could buy another package this easy-to-carry that performs this well. Sure, menu items may be awkward and hard to find, but frankly, after they're set, I don't really use most of them. The basic functions of this camera perform just fine. In fact, all things considered, they are flat amazing. Just my opinion. Thanks for the overview.

Hatchet job? I thought it was quirky, but other than somewhat overzealous marketing, I rather liked the camera. Thanks for the kind words.

Hi Maarten! Which one do you prefer? This one or the Panasonic GX85? Or can you recommend other mirrorless camera with the same price range?
I've been looking for a lot and can't decide yet. I would mainly use this when travelling.

There's certainly a lot to choose from in this category, and it's hard to recommend one for you without knowing your preferences and intentions. I would choose the GX85, but for purely personal reasons. Does this help - th-cam.com/video/9WiJQF0JXIE/w-d-xo.html

These days even the most high-end pro cameras will have settings that provide a fully automated (focus and exposure) mode with a minimum of fuss.
