  • The Olympus E-M10 Mark IV may not have the bells and whistles found on more expensive Olympus bodies, but it's a solid entry-level camera. It's also got some photographic soul - something we can't say about all cameras.

    I have previous version of this camera and I use it nature macro photography, using the M Zuiko 30mm macro, while out in the field. It’s such a light kit it makes walking about a breeze, and the IBIS means no need to carry any sort of tripod. I have a couple of EM-1s that I use for my main cameras, but the EM-10 is perfect for nature walks, unless it rains.

  • @momchilyordanov8190

    The M5 III has everything they point out as a weaknesses - phase detect AF, more customizable buttons, usable back-button AF functionality, microphone input and the screen rotates on a tripod too. It's $300 more, but if you are paying $700 anyway for the M10 IV, better buy the more capable one. Now, should you buy a different brand altogether? A valid question. But as a former Olympus and current Sony user I can say that, unless you are a professional and you NEED the most IQ for the $ spent, the OM-D cameras feel better in the hand, are more responsive and fun to use.

    Great camera, and I love the physical controls, but the EM1 III offers too much more for me to consider the budget option. As others have pointed out - it is great to see some genuine MFT love here. MFT is still first choice for many people despite the TH-cam trend of denigrating the system. The system simply offers too much goodness to think it is going away any time soon.

    If I wasn't investing in a full frame system for professional work, I'd be using m43 hands down. I think for 95% of the people out there, it's more than enough camera. It has so many benefits too, cheaper lenses, farther reach for wildlife photography, faster fps, better Ibis, and usually m43 pioneers in unique features that should totally be on ff cameras but aren't. I'm very hopeful for the future of olympus/omd solutions and panasonic in the m43 field.

    Very nice review. On point with what it can do. Me personal, I'd go for the E-M5 III or E-M1 II when it's on sales for $999. I'm sure the E-M10 IV will start dropping in price to make the gap a bit bigger. What I've researched is the sensor comes from the Pen-F. It has a slightly less dynamic range, ISO and rolling shutter performance and than the E-M1 Mark II and E-M5 Mark III. It is so nice to have a UHS-II card slot, of many things that has held me back from switching to Fujifilm. Even with the focus limitations, I got some pretty nice action shots with S-AF 8.5fps mechanical and 11fps electronic when there isn't rolling shutter from my E-M10 mark II. I'm sure this one will do well too.

    This is a very nice review. I just bought the 10 Mark IV to replace my original 10. It arrived just 2 days ago. I also have an EM1 Mark ii and a EM5 Mark iii and a bunch of Olympus glass. This new addition will be a great walking around camera. I like the size, the feel and the upgrade to 20 mg. And, it is so stealth for street and event photography with the Olympus 14-24mm pancake lens. I know that I am going to miss the custom function buttons that are on my original EM10. I am not really sure that I care about the selfie screen feature. I like to shoot on a tripod and I am not sure what plate to get if any that will allow that feature? Also, I am looking for a less bulky case for the camera than my Think Tank Digital Holster 5? Thanks for your always insightful review Chris.

  • @HR-wd6cw
    @HR-wd6cw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I know this is an old review (almost 13 months old) but one thing I think people miss in some of the Olympus (and Panasonic) cameras, that make them appealing is IBIS. Other than the Fuji XS-10 which comes in at around $1000 just for the body, and the Nikon Z5 (which is periodically on sale for $999) I can't think of any other entry level kit, with IBIS, for under $1000. IBIS is usually found on premium cameras or high-end APS-C cameras like the A6300, A6500 and A6600 all of which are over $1000 for just the camera itself (no lens). While a m4/3 may not be a camera you would go out and do sports shooting with, I think there is a place for these -- and that would be for people like street shooters or people who just want a small camera to take with them on a walk or a hike, or to take to dinner or on the town, but not have it be so bulky it gets in the way. I'm seriously thinking about one of these to accompany my FF system (which I would never give up, but there are times that the FF System is just too bulky to carry around, I sometimes don't bother bringing a camera, and we all know that if you talk to the pro photographers, many will say that's a bad excuse to not have a camera). For me, a camera like this would be if I was taking a weekend trip somewhere where photography is not the primary objective, say going camping with friends or something like that. This would be perfect, has decent enough image quality, and enough resolution you could still get an 8x10 print, and the high ISO actually is not bad for being a m4/3 camera, and can clean up pretty good in post production I found with some sample images. But realy for me, what is going to sell me on this is IBIS camera kit for around $700 now.

  • @SovietLensReviews
    @SovietLensReviews 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Honestly that video colour profile with the IBIS sells it at this price point. Not unnaturally sharp with every red jumping out of the screen like Sony colours.

    I got a Sony A7 IV with the 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II and 50mm f/1.2 GM lenses, and it’s HEAVY! I wanted something that was cheaper, smaller, and lighter that I could just throw in a small bag or wear on a strap all day. It’s really great for traveling since it will take better pictures than a smartphone, but it is much smaller than a full-frame camera and lens. The lenses are super cheap and plentiful, too. Of course, there’s limitations on the low light quality with the small sensor and lenses. However, for the size and price, it can’t be beat!

    In The NEtherlands we have third winters too like this year, but we say this (freely translated) "April can be nice and so sweet but don't be surprised by the snow that you'll meet." This year we had about 10-15 cm of snow locally. Yeah...nice review of very nice camera. Plasticky but it looks really good. If they only had a good AF tracking or C-AF on it. Just use the sensor of the EM1 mkII with OSPDAF...That would make the cam really the perfect starter or even lower end enthusiast cam.

    I think the best move for Olympus now is to implement a heavy image AI processing power in their cameras, that's taking advantage of that small sensor. A lot of my friends have Olympus cameras just for the jpeg. And I really wish that a Olympus camera could process a jpeg just like my iPhone does. I talk about HDR, sky separation, skin color editing (shadow masks), highlight correction and all that smart stuff... Considering the sensor size, this is very possible to do...
    I know that many heavy PROS that are shooting raw and editing at home are reading this, but guys 80% of Olympus camera buyers just want a fun jpeg camera... That's why I have my Fujifilm while working with Canon gear for a living... :) Just think about it! There is not a SIGLE mirrorless camera on the market that does AI processing like an iPhone (or other top smartphone) at the moment...

    • @uninsulatedshrimp5518
      @uninsulatedshrimp5518 ปีที่แล้ว

      It takes a lot of processing power to do that. Phones have much more powerful chips in them than cameras whcih allows them to do all that processing. It would make an entry level camera very expensive.

    I own this body, and love it. I think it well represents the spirit of MFT (that is, compact and handy). I only have a pancake zoom lens at the moment, but will explore other small lenses from Olympus and Panasonic. I don’t shoot sports or wildlife, so AF is not that serious matter. The only disappointment is the lack of weather sealing. EM5 is a good alternative, but it has a fully articulated screen, which I never enjoyed, so ended up with EM10.

    Micro 4/3 cameras will survive for these reasons.
    _The size of micro 4/3 digital image sensor is much larger than every digital image sensor of smartphones cameras and that permits much better high ISO performance. Additionally the average micro 4/3 camera body is much smaller and lighter than APS-C and full frame camera bodies with similar capabilities. That is very nice with daily or travel photography.
    _There is a significant large variety of fast prime autofocus lenses designed for micro 4/3 cameras. Something that all APS-C mirrorless or dSLR cameras traditionally lack because are more oriented to amateurs and most amateurs prefer the convenience of zoom lenses.
    _The smaller micro 4/3 doesn't only permit small camera bodies but smaller lenses too
    So the micro 4/3 is the next best thing to smartphones for daily photography without the unbearable large size or weight of APS-C cameras and lenses. .

    Hi dpreview! I'm planning on getting into Bird photography especially birds in flight. I have a few options in my mind due to my limited budget,
    1) Olympus om-d e-m10 mark iii
    2) Panasonic's gh-4 (but I heard it doesn't have proper AF)
    3) Olympus Om-d e-m1 (became too old and I cannot afford mark ii).
    4) Olympus om-d e-m5 mark ii
    All of the four above, I can buy them used for around 300$ and am planning to get a good lens. Can you please recommend which is a better option and why? Thanks a lot!.

      If u have a budget of 300-400 dollar and want to do wildlife, DSLR’s Are The Way To go In Opinion Since They are gonna have Better Af Than Any Mirrorless Released Before 2017 or any of the cameras you mentioned above try to find something like a used d5300 plus a cheap telephoto lens like a preowned 70-300…….

    I went through the interchangeable lens scenario back in film days, it's a total pain, what I have these days is a Panasonic FZ330 with an f2.8 constant aperture from 25-600mm 35mm equivalent fixed lens with enough quality to satisfy all my needs. Sometimes I need to use my Adobe Photoshop for the odd large print output.

    What camera was this video shot on?

  • @steve_seguin
    @steve_seguin ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I just bought one used for a steal of a price.
    I was using an ancient E-M5 m1 for stills the last decade, but the aging EVF and lack of proper focus peaking made using my manual F0.95 lenses very hard to use. I also found the 16-mp sensor limited by how much I could crop the photos in post. Also, the grip hurt my hand after prolonged use, but that said, I loved the little guy. Hoping the M10-IV can address all those issues.
    While I have some nicer cameras for video work, they don't have IBIS and are rather big, bulky, and ugly. When taking photos of friends or out on travel, people also respond differently to what is seen as a cute vintage film camera, versus something more serious and professional. A longer lens, even with an old sensor, gives some really unique shots that most smartphones still can't touch.
    I was holding out for the OM-5, thinking USB-C + Stacked Phase sensor would be worth dropping cash for, but it disappointed on that front. The price is good, but it ended up being just a rebadged M5-mk3. The OM-1 is too expensive and ugly; I'd rather leave MFT in that case and jump to Sony FF if I could afford it. I do also have a Pany GH5S, which I love, but the continuous auto focus is so bad when compared to a Sony.
    Smartphones have the smallest sensors around, yet they are crushing the market. 4K webcams, Mevo start cameras, vlogging cameras, drones, and gopros also have smaller sensors, yet they are commanding several hundred dollars or more these days. There's so much opportunity for MFT, and with DJI using similarly small sensors, there's no shortage of investment going into that smaller sensor space still. Give me a MFT device that's exciting for ~$1000, and I'll buy it.

  • @dddmmm21

    This may sound weird but I had 2 EM10 before, the M2 and the M3 - What I dont like about them is how they feel in your face when you take a pic through the EVF. 1) It is not very face ergonomical, it hits your cheek bone; 2) the camera is always very warm in your face; 3) If you are sweaty, it will all go to the back screen and 4) it makes this electronic buzz sound when you trigger the shutter, which was very anti-climatic for a vintage looking camera. Perhaps a pull up EVF would solve most of it, but as is the camera never felt right.

    Olympus offer the looks and perhaps a slightly better range of primes but I still think Panasonic is the way to go if you want bang for the buck from an M4/3 system. My G80 might be older but it's super cheap to buy, is weather sealed and has all the customisation you could ever need. The G90 is the same price as this Olympus and is only slightly older. Not a fanboy but that's where I'd put my money for M4/3.
