When I was 19, I saved up $250 from my restaurant job and went to a local Edward Jones office because I wanted to buy stock in Amazon. This was back when they only sold books (but said they were planning to expand). The financial advisor dude wouldn't do it! He said there was no way they could ever sell enough books to justify the stock price and I'd be better off investing in Barnes & Noble. I disagreed, so I took my money and left.
23 years later, I still wonder what my hypothetical $250 of Amazon stock would be worth today...

No the lab accident happened as a teenager, because some idiot spilled some chemicals in my lab and they spilled on me. I still have yet to get my revenge.

Hey Simon, I just recently found out that there are movies on vinyl called CED, they started making them in the 80s but did not make a player for them until 81 I guess, maybe a good video idea?
Those were called RCA Selectavision Videodisks, and were in my opinion a large part of the cause of the decline of the RCA Corporation. I second your suggestion.

Early in amazon's history, I remember going into a chain bookstore and asking for an item. They didn't have it and I said "OK. I'll just get it online." I'll never forget the clerk saying that he'd be afraid to buy something on the internet. In the 20+ years since, I wonder how much stuff he's bought online?
Fun fact. Im a 32 year old American, who has never ordered anything online, aside from pizza. Because im a lazy American (and the dominos app lets you use cash)

It's all good here, Simon lets his hair down and is very casual. *Very* casual on this channel. 😎 This is very quickly becoming my favourite Simon channel.
Funfact: Samsung also sells cars, they partnered with Renault to sell cars under Samsung's brandname. They still exists in South Korea.

I mean back when they made playing cards, playing cards and games in general was associated almost exclusively with gambling and the yakuza so really Nintendo along with the modern video games industry as a whole in Japan originated with ties to the yakuza and the criminal world. It's actually really surprising given their history that they moved away from that so quickly and shifted their public image so drastically, which isn't the same for the creators of a certain blue hedgehog that "ALLEGEDLY" still have really close ties with the yakuza...

my theory is that Simon was raised in a dungeon in Lichtenstein and never learned to speak until he was 14 when he hacked a computer and signed up for a course in Royal Perfect speech or whatever they call it. That's why he says conTROVersy and ZEBra and has no idea what Nokia is
I find I do the same despite being Australian. I put it down to growing up watching Sesame Street, which was very heavy on repeating the alphabet. I also say 'vase' as 'vayse' instead of 'varse' for the same reason.

Check out Powell's bookstore in Portland, OR (where I live). I don't know if it's still true, but at least for quite a while, 90% of all of Amazon's books came from their store. Their primary store is called the City of Books and you really want to take one of their Maps before you walk in. It's one of my favorite places in the world. :-)

I had a friend who worked as a funeral director and besides embalming, most of what he did to prepare the bodies was actually make up and prosthetics for an open casket funeral. They would do things like punching a wire through the jaw to keep the mouth closed using a device that was like a gun with a needle on it that would insert the wire, putting these little plastic cups with little spines in the outside of them under their eyelids to keep their eyes closed, reconstructing facial features from wax if the person was missing part of their face, like in a gunshot wound situation, and just using regular store bought make up to give them a more lifelike color. The whole idea was to make them look as close to being alive as possible. Those people can do some amazing work, too. I've seen cases (not in person) where a person was missing half their face from a shotgun wound and it was reconstructed almost seamlessly.
I used to sit in with him and keep him company while he prepared bodies for services, usually working until the middle of the night. Of all the things I saw, for some reason the most surprising one was the fact that the bodies were nude while being prepared. If not nude, with a towel covering their torso. But I guess it makes sense since you have to have free access to various parts of the body, and drain out various fluids, and you wouldn't want to make a mess of their nice clothes for the funeral. It's just not something you think about, I suppose.

As for a suggestion for business stories I would suggest the Samsung phone that literally exploded. It's amazing that Samsung's reputation is still really good, and it's an interesting and rather funny story even if a lot of people have heard it. I'm certain your writers and your personality can bring something new to the story. I would also suggest the garbage fire that is Gamefreak right now, but I think a lot of people are covering that >.>

Christopher Walken was an FDNY firefighter before he became an actor. In fact -- on 9/11-- he headed over to his former firehouse, geared up, and joined his former colleagues right alongside to help with the evacuation, rescue, and clean up. So, while he did do a brief summer gig with the circus as an apprentice working with the lions, I think his time spent as a firefighter is way more awesome. He could have had a lifetime career as a firefighter, been passionate and happy about it, and we never would have had one of our most iconic character actors.

Watching this again, it serves as a reminder that, yes, it's better now (and is one of my favourite channels in all of TH-cam), but back then it was already great (and a channel I was highly interested)

I not only remember when Amazon only sold books, I remember when Yahoo! still stood for "Yet Another Hierarchical Object Organizer", which was changed a few times since then, until they started pretending it wasn't an acronym at all. I remember when we all logged on to Amazon trying to get our college textbooks for a few hundred less a piece, and then desperately trying to see them at semester's end. That was about all it was--specific enough to have more potential of scoring some savings, and a little resale cash than eBay ever had.
