The Healing Power of the Vagus Nerve and The Need for Neck Rotation

  • I am reading a great book called Accessing the Healing Power of the Vagus Nerve by Stanley Rosenberg.
He observes many of the same things that Postural Restoration talks about, particularly when it comes to the importance of head and neck rotation via the SCMs and trapezius muscles.
The neck is autonomic, meaning its function is dependent upon, and will alter the function of, your autonomic nervous system. It's intimately tied to all your sensory organs: eyes, teeth, tongue, and nose. These sensory organs allow us to "face the world" and interact with our surroundings.
When any of those sensory organs are not functioning properly, it can cause our vagus nerve to malfunction. Conversely, a malfunctioning vagus nerve can alter our ability to interact with our environment effectively.

Yeah, when you look at the way the body was "engineered" as a load-bearing "breathing machine" it really makes it obvious that God is real and He can heal our bodies through their correctly intended design.

Pure shame. And then I find an explanation on YT, of all places! F-ing unbelievable!

The Green Knight I know you posted awhile ago but I got some osteopathic work done, cranial sacral where the therapist move the bones in my skull and he released probably about 37 years of tensions and problems I’ve been experiencing and I’ve had the same problems you describe. But all along it was a problem w too much tension in my face. Sounds strange but even my eyesight is better along w my blood circulation. I can actually balance on my feet. It’s truly a miracle. Just thought I’d share.

Hi Katie. The book is great. But as I state in the video, what the author describes in regards to the neck is part of a larger pattern of the entire body, which unfortunately he doesn't recognize. I'd recommend the Postural Restoration Institute's primary courses for a better understanding of the situation.

Wow, amazing insight and helps connect the dots around the power of the vagus nerve and the nervous system -- it's survival mode vs. the body feeling safe to perform, trust, thrive etc. I've had hip / pelvic rotation issues for YEARS and made progress with chiro, meditative mind body work, foam rolling, functional fitness, etc but the problem never fully goes away, especially with the unconscous posture twisting. Felt a shift with Neal's feet technique. Neck to feet, it all connects. Thank you!

    Totally made sense to me.
I feel like my multiple surgeries for breast cancer, mastectomy and 5 reconstructions, the way I sleep on my right side to feel safe and protective/recover from surgery and anxiety has contributed to my stress and vagus nerve being restricted by this imbalance you talk about.
I’ve been readying quite abit about vagus nerve and I include humming to reduce tension there, which I believe is calming.
When I stand and focus on my stance and grounded like in “mountain pose” from yoga
In particular arch of right foot and heel of left with eyes closed, I notice a different view in the mirror. Afterwards.
I also am aware of my hip flexors tightness pain in glutes and other neck pain, also around trig aural area activated.
I’m so excited to hear all of this as it pieces back together my cause and symptoms, and treatment together as I suffer from fibromyalgia.
Not sure if my comment made sense but your thoughts would be appreciated ☀️🙏🏼

@@NealHallinan Are there any Postural Restoration Certified PTs in Ontario Canada and could this stuck pattern also set off someone's bowels, I am assuming the answer would be yes? I was diagnosed with Crohn's Colitis back in 2008 and after doing a few months of adjustments with my NUCCA Chiropractor, meditation, electromedicine work, various different nutrients, diets, IV's, etc. I had reversed all of my ailments including all the neck and middle back pain that I was experiencing at the time.
However, with the stress of the world in the last three years, I feel as though I've been stuck in some sort an autonomic nervous system pattern that leaves me absolutely debilitated now after the slightest bit of stress which then leads to intense neck, mid-back, and left hip pain, the hip pain is new, which then seems to set of my autoimmune conditions and previous infections with Lyme disease. From there I end up completely inflamed again, falling out of remission (mind you I also suspect some sort of candida overgrowth again!), but definitely noticed a clear pattern after a traumatic event. A good friend of mine did your program, she is a practitioner herself who had various postural issues after several really bad accidents and she thinks this therapy could help me but she's in the USA, hence my original question.
My situation has gotten so bad with my bowels and other internal organ systems because of all of this that I've almost been hospitalized 2 times in the last three years, one in which I refused to seek conventional medical treatment which ended in a near-death experience, so it's gotten pretty bad. Most recently, after thousands of dollars and hours of various therapies and things that I could do for myself having worked in the natural health care industry for over a decade, I did find myself nearly reversing all of my symptoms once again but a recent stressful event seems to have started it all back up again in a matter of weeks! Any suggestions?

I have this exact postural dysfunction you speak of to the right, shoulder high, teeth and jaw TMJ on right, everything off in the exact way you describe. I've been seeing an osteopath to help. I had no idea my posture issues were related to my trauma, but the way you explain it makes total sense - my body was in fight or flight for 17 years and it completely changed me structurally. I have severe tinntius it appeared in 2017 and had gradually gotten worse along with bad neck and trapeze pain. I think the tinntius is related to this. But medical system continues to say they don't know what tinnitus is and there is no cure. I have rebelled against this the whole time. When laying flat on my back or sitting with my legs stretched out in front of me, my right foot turns severely to the right almost to the point that my little toe can touch the ground, it's severely rotated to the right. The left foot points straight up. I also am suffering from TMJ. All of this makes sense. I'm going to show this video to my useless GP and physiotherapists and then never return to either of them!

Hey a shout out again to this video it's me second time my body had to get up immediately and do the small exercise recommended here and even after the three years of very hard work in 22 years of observing and all kinds of horror trying to climb out of disability I probably would have been in the constraints of a tight-reined horse still if I had not come across this somehow so I got to tell you the value of your posting all your work and everything is just over the roof for me I can't tell you how valuable it has become to me what you did just finding the book reading the book coming across it and posting it and then it coming across to me and the 22 years of hell I've been living I just got to tell you again thank you thank you thank you I can't believe the difference I notice already within an hour that I can turn fully left now which I haven't been able to since I broke my neck and also now I realize what the pains have been going up the right side of the neck recently and up into the the skull must have been caused by this it's all starting to feel so much better already there was a lot of nerve activity immediately after doing the exercise for about 10 minutes all the way from the skull down to the right foot which broke over six places the leg broke and the neck broken the head got scalped and there was a whole lot of feeling that happen from this little tiny exercise and I cannot connotate the value of what you have done for me thank you!!!🥰

The main problem of the Vagus Nerve is located in the middle of the outside of peoples neck. The nerve there is mostly blocked by trigger points. Unblocking these trigger points and the Vagus Nerve will become in a relaxed state. This is the most important thing to treat the Vagus Nerve. Once you have done that, than you are going to feel that both on a physically and mentally way. You will feel as if you are reborned. It will change your life forever.

You're great Neil, you seem to have only one physical problem left in your life - your sight. Since you opened many doors of perception for myself, I will give you an advice, which, if you take it, will help you. You need to sungaze to fix that - it will completely fix your eyesight (and much more). I'm claiming that from personal experience - many years ago I irreversibly damaged my eyes with alcohol (absinthe), and it had been like that for a couple of years. Then I started sungazing (for other reasons than fixing eyes) and I noticed my eyesight is getting better. After a while, my sight became laser sharp. I am unusually strong with incredible perception on many levels because of that. It is incredible how good visual system affects everything in our being, but that's something you already know. The only thing is, my sight deteriorates with time, so I have to sungaze again to fix it, every few years for a few weeks. I'm not a constant sungazer, I only use it as a necessity. Hopefully you will read this and try it. There are a few "tips and tricks" when it comes to sungazing, if you decide to do it, ask here on this comment and I'll let you know what they are. Thanks for the knowledge you share, and rock on.

Although the exercises he prescribes were heartbreakingly ineffective. For a patho pec with a right crossbite anyway lol. It described the experience of my problems so well, read it at least three times cover to cover trying *will* the piece I was missing to reveal itself to me.

My C1 is always rotated to the left, and I have it out back in place twice per week, or it shuts off my life. My right rib cage is a mess, but so it the left side. My right SCM is atrophied and you can’t even see it when I turn my head. The left SCM is weak and right, but you can actually see it. Very interesting video.
