Jaw Pain and Hypermobility (Is it ALL connected?)

  • Hypermobility can create pelvic instability and neck breathing which, in turn, can create jaw pain and tension.
    👉pritrainer.com...
    Without a stable pelvis, you can't diaphragmatically breathe, so your neck will be used as compensation. The neck directly influences jaw position through hyoid bone and temporal bone connections. A mispositioned jaw can lead to neck and shoulder tension as well as postural stability challenges as the body goes into a state of "fight or flight".

    Neal, this is EXACTLY what I've just discovered and boom you come out with a video 3 days later. My neck (and boy) had been in hyperextension my whole life (from improper tongue placement growing up and braces), and I just found my tmj issues are from literally broken bones in face from when I got my wisdom teeth out, dislocating that jaw and creating bone shards. My cervical spine is soo inflamed and that is effecting my jugular artery, preventing draining and putting me at great risk. Prevention is so key but so is knowing about these connections so people can get fixed. In my case, surgery is likely the outcome but otherwise functional orthodontics/orthortropics would be my fix.
    I think it'd be amazing if you discus more about tongue posture because it's so related and once you play around with it you see first hand like - oh tongue on right side back pallet activates these muscles, tongue on left side does this, tongue should be here at rest and here when active, and the effect it plays on the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system. It's like your tongue can choose the off button for your parasympathetic or sympathetic nervous system - and if that gets discombobulated you're in for a world of physical and mental hurt in a way.
    Gah, I love this stuff. You're great!

    I once heard a voice teacher say that you're supposed to "sing from your butt." She didn't explain it very well, but in retrospect, I think she was trying to say that a well-trained singer with good bodily awareness can consciously access the pelvic diaphragm instead of relying entirely on the mouth, the neck, the chest, or upper abdomen. Perhaps colleges should offer PRI classes as an elective for all students and as a course requirement for students majoring or minoring in voice. If I were in college now, I'd definitely want to sign up, not because I'm an aspiring singer, but because I find the subject matter to be fascinating and I need more bodily awareness.

      @@NealHallinanI really like your channel. My focus has INTERNAL Chinese Martial Arts, I knew it worked I just didn't understand how.
      So, here's one key element I have narrowed down and now better understand thanks to you.
      It's called the TONGUE PRESS, you curl your tongue back and press it to the roof of your mouth.
      1. It aligns the jaw.
      2. It's a balanced brain muscle activity because the right and left are integrated into one organ. And this shifts the focus to the peripheral nervous system.
      3. It forces you to breathe through your nose which balances the oxygen to carbon dioxide ratio opening circulation.
      4. It silences inner dialogue because when you think in words the tongue is stimulated in micro expressions as it would be when talking out loud. Consciously using the tongue press prevents the tongue from forming the micro movements and the inner dialogue stops.
      I don't "meditate" while doing it, I just go about my daily business with my tongue pressed and can feel my body realigning.
      Now, the normal explanation is that you're closing a circuit so the chi can flow freely through the meridians. I don't like that explanation.
      I think it's aligning the mind body connection to relax the inhibitory reflexes that prevent the maximal operation of the Golgi apparatus. Without the tendon reflex inhibiting the muscle it now seems like "super power".
      Of course in the martial arts it's then used in "sport specific" ways like you discussed with the NBA coach.

    • @James-g3w7w
      @James-g3w7w 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@NealHallinanAlso, in addition to the tongue press is REVERSE BREATHING, and what I now think that is doing is coordinating the diaphragms and freeing the psoas, for example while inhaling you contract the anus which is activating the pelvis.

Now, I have no bite, jaw, skull, neck, spine, hips, legs, feet are all twisted. Vision is messed up too. I wholeheartedly agree with this, I was a gymnast at an early age and have hyper mobility. Double jointed and also have had tmj all my life. When I started doing yoga and then became a teacher and taught everyday, something miraculous happened where I tuned in and started to balance my hypermobility by “micro-bending” in certain vinyasa poses, and bringing my awareness to areas that always were more “bendy”. With a regular practice, I was able to heal myself, including my tmj and migraines! I stopped teaching for a bit and my inflammation has been coming back. Back to yoga I go!

    • @steviemichelle7271
      @steviemichelle7271 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes!! I was hoping to see someone else mention this! I have hyper mobility, and if I’m not doing yoga regularly, everything gets thrown off. So many people think yoga is only for increasing strength and flexibility, but I already have those. It’s like yoga reminds my brain to use certain muscles that it forgets about. If I slack off for too long, I’ll still be strong and flexible, but I’ll start getting sharp pain in random muscles that are working to do a job that isn’t theirs 😒

    • @pixnay

My entire body has been a hell of a mess this past decade due to my past orthodontic work as a kid. I currently have a consultation appointment scheduled with an experienced airway-focused orthodontist in around a week from now so fingers crossed. You blew my mind with the standing-breathing relation! I'm a hypermobile singer and certified voice teacher. I do well with breath support when singing, but I am so awful at breathing exercises. I guess lots of compensations happen with vocal tract alignments, together with (over?) active latisimus dorsi and solar plexus when singing. It's also way easier to sing during movement, which I always knew, but now I'm starting to think it has something to do with helping to release unwanted tension in the pelvic to free the diaphragm.

My party trick is to bet people they can’t crush my hand with both of there’s in a grip type situation. All the bones in my fingers from the wrist down just fold in on each other. I don’t feel any pain or discomfort from it. 55 and my SI joints haven’t even started to fuseyet, in fact they are a pain because they are so loose!

      That's interesting. I'm just starting some chiropracty treatment for halux rigidus (stiff big toe) which has become painful and is causing issues with my gait on my left side as I compensate.
      I have a long second toe. My chiropractor is working on my left side as everything is in a state of tension from my neck down on the left side. I also had dental work 6 months ago which meant I had the bottom molar on the left side removed. I'm sure that was the trigger to my big toe issues. Thanks for this. I'm going to go back to my dentist to see about a dental implant@NealHallinan

      It does , but if your case is like Neil's, then mewing or myo therapy won't be enough. Neil here had child ortho which damaged and put him into right BC left TMC pattern. That was the trigger. No amount of mewing could of helped him get out of it. He often says that pri techniques got him out of it plus the glasses, but the key in my opinion of course, was the tmj splint. Why? Because the child ortho he got messed him up. Pri and glasses might of helped to a degree but the key was tmjd splint.

    Thanks for this video Neal. It's incredibly applicable to me. I've been in completely debilitating chronic pain/tension for 4 and a half years. Hours of stretching with some massage everyday, I have no life because of it. I've just received my splint, which just moved the pain, rather than gave me any relief. I'm hypermobile and apparently have "left and right torsion", according to my physio. Going based on your video, I think I defimitely need to look at getting some proper insoles, rather than these custom one's I bought online. My vision was slightly more far sighted, otherwise was ok, but not sure if that could create issues also? Thanks for what you do and I wish I could book to see you in person/for treatment from you, but I'm in the UK

      If you have tmjd issues misaligned jaw etc and stuck in pattern , you most likely need a tmjd splint and not just any, but as specific one that will realign the jaw or override the wrongly position jaw signal to the brain . There are loads of splints that don't do more harm than good. There is also dIY splints however they aren't that straightforward and require some skill and knowledge

All of this, bearing in mind, I was born deaf in my right ear, only hearing in my left ear, often turning one way to hear people on my wrong side, could this set of problems be all interrelated and what would be some ways to address it?

    I have extreme pain because my neck is straight and my first ribs come out of place and the pain is in the front of my neck and ribs and sternum.

There is a VR anatomy software called Organon, that can be used with a VR headset like the Oculus Quest 3 and a decent PC. Its truly incredible! Truly beyond anything I ever expected or imagined was possible, its used by medical students. The nerves, muscles, bones, ligaments, everything can be examined in detail. You can even go inside arteries and more. I think you would have a field day. Im happy to help you get set up of you are interested. Could revolutionize explaining and showing patients whats going on from a PRI perspective.

    What about tongue tie? Any thoughts about that? I’m thinking it will help with the neck tension and with reversing my overall pattern.
    Im noticing my vision and eye soreness and headaches are greatly affected by my head posture and my neck tension.
    When I’m forcing my neck and head to be at the right posture i feel my eyes relieves but the neck tension is dramatically increasing, so i can’t get myself to undo this pattern and this why the tongue tie idea came from.

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've seen tongue ties hold people in a postural pattern that wasn't able to be resolved until the tounge tie was released. However, if you are in the US, I'd highly recommend finding a PRI therapist to evaluate your tongue's impact upon the things I talk about in this video, and if it needs to be released, so be it. But I would do as much as possible beforehand to prepare your body for the tongue tie release. And by preparing your body, I mean a PRI program and perhaps some tongue "prep work" through a myofunctional therapist.

I always find myself with neck stuck to the right and my head turned to the left. Also my orthodontist said my left mollars are more worn and my left jaw is placed deeper into the socket. He is going to even my bite by using the braces, put a orthodontic microimplants to pull some mollars in/out, then use a recreating metod for worn teeth, by evening the bite. In the end I will also receive a "Perfect oclusion splint" which has to even my bite on both sides.
    Let's see it it works...

      It could as long as your jaw recession was a *result* of a forward head posture (through normal patterning like too much neck breathing), and not the *cause * of the forward head posture (which would be a structural issue that PRI techniques wouldn't resolve on their own).
