    I want to thank you for your easy to understand video on, changing out the fuel pump. My "friend from down the street" who says he is a mechanic, charged me to go in and "mess it up" to the point where I now have to fix it myself. I am 75 years old, and have heard the sugar in the gas tank since I was about twelve. So it shows you how "old wives tales" can really hurt you if you don't know what you are doing. Thanks again for the friendly easy to understand video.

    Thomas,
    Thank you for the video. I am 75 and used your video to do a solo tank replacement on a 1998 Chevy 2500. The comments were a great help. After reading one comment I borrowed a motorcycle jack to lower and raise the tank.
    My 2500 had the clip style fuel pump connectors that require the plastic release tool. An explanation of how to properly insert the tool to release the clips is worthy of the time. I bent the spring clips removing the fuel line.
    Mine is a Michigan truck with rust. The tank had rusted. My fuel line between the tank and the filter had rust where it was clipped to the frame. I cut it out with a small pipe cutter and my auto parts store fabricated a new line,connector to the pump and a splice fitting to the original line. They stated that it is a common problem here.
    The entire job was 7 hours with a trip to the auto parts store and replacing the filler neck while I was at it.
    I also discovered that the brake lines I paid to have replaced several years ago were patched in with similar compression fittings I used for the fuel line.
    I hope the helps others.

My question, can I drop the tank the same way you did on that 97 chevy truck? Thanks for the educational video

    thomas brian, thanks for this tutorial. I did just as you said in the video and took about 2 hours total. It's a little tougher than one thinks putting the tank back on the jack, but do able. I started off by spraying all the bolts with liquid wrench. Everything came off smooth. This method was easy and 1 person can do it. Patience is the key to this in my opinion. Thanks again.

    The guy on this video has the most informative video in this I’ve seen so far. I needed to replace the pump but is so detailed about other situations that Steve related to this such as the the fuel meter reading half or full cuz of bad ground. Taking off the bed being a bad idea and also having to disconnect the rear lights.

  • @kansascountry970
    @kansascountry970 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Update, just put a new fuel pump in my 97 1500. It did take longer than expected but that wasn't really Brian's fault. Just a warning for other shortbed owners, they are different than longbeds, like the one shown in this video. On a shortbed, the front of the tank is sitting on a bracket that is bolted to the frame. It isn't held up by a strap like shown in the video. I decided to unbolt the bracket from the frame and just leave it attached to the tank but it is difficult to get the tank lowered then because you can't drop it straight down. The bracket hits the lower lip of the "c" channel frame and you can't push it over far enough to clear because the tank hits the driveshaft on the other side. I had to drop the passenger side of the tank down at an angle while lowering the tank. Then its a real pain to get back in to position using a standard jack, because when you tip the tank to clear the driveshaft, it wants to slide off the jack. Maybe dropping the driveshaft would help, I don't know for sure. I have to say, if I didn't have a toolbox in the bed and a bale spear attached to the bed as well, I'd probably try the bed raising method next time and just pray the bolts don't break! If you have a long bed though, I'm sure brians method works good

      Mine is a 98 GMC 4X4 short bed and I have the same bracket on the front strap. I did the same by unbolting the bracket from the frame, 4 15mm nuts, but I went one step further by unbolting the strap from the bracket and moving the whole thing out of the way. I did have to remove the filler neck hose and return hose from the filler neck as the tank would not lower with them attached. I had no other issues.

    • @MAGGOT_VOMIT
      @MAGGOT_VOMIT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Kansas Country @@daviddaniels4075 LOL I'm reviewing this vid again, cause a minute ago, I'm under my 96 SB 4x4 thinking "I didn't see no STEENKING BRACKEET IN THE VID!!!" xD. Are you saying that the tank wont come down with the filler hose attached to the tank?
      I removed that front bracket like you said. That bracket & strap wouldn't have been so bad, but some "Mentality" had twisted the strap 45degrees and the long threaded end wouldn't push up through the bracket, cause of the lip in the tank. I finally finessed it with my hammer (big adjustable) and got the bracket off the frame.
      Hopefully I never have to do this again, but will try the "Bed Lift" method.
      If I wasn't strapped for time, I would've looked up an EXTERNAL PUMP KIT.
      Thanks

    Thanks for your video. The job did take me over 2 hours because my truck as 1 strap and 1 cross member holding it up, but the most difficult part was putting the tank back on. It fell off my jack and the fuel pump harness came out of the tank because my tank cannot be dropped all the way down to the floor without disconnecting the hoses. So I had to reinstall it again. Anyway, I'm am still glad I took on the job and was successful. Thanks again.

      rough, but perfect. you save a lot of money. great job. a large thin piece of wood (plywood 1 ft x 2 ft ) would keep the tank from sliding when placed on the jack when there is a lot of fuel. but great job. thanks for watching.

    Incredible tutorial! I was thinking about changing my fuel pump myself but when I looked into it and saw people removing the whole bed I got overwhelmed and thought there was absolutely no way I was gonna be able to do this. I'm so glad I didn't just stop on the first video I watched and decided to keep looking because after watching your video I have the confidence to do this myself. In your video you said you may make another video showing how to put it all back together but after browsing your videos I did not see that one. My main concern with doing this myself is just getting the tank mounted back under the truck. You said the tank is heavy, especially when it's full, so I was wondering what the best way to remount by myself would be. It would be much appreciated if you could help me out, but if you're too busy then I'll just have to wing it. Thanks so much for this amazing tutorial, you have gotten yourself another subscriber :)

    I used this method a couple months ago to change the fuel pump sending unit assembly on my 94 K1500 (first tried the bed removal method but the bolts were not budging with the impact hammer and I did not want to break any using a breaker bar and brute force) truck has almost 200k on the original pump and the truck has spent all of its life in New England so it's plenty rusty. I was able to get the tank down the same way you did but the top of the fuel pump didn't look as clean as yours was (looks like that fuel pump sending unit assembly on your truck was changed recently) put a new assembly in the truck and got it back running again worked great. The truck sat for a month and I went to move it today and same condition no fuel supply I am getting power to the connector on the top of the tank but the pump does not run, fuel pump relay seems to be working, when I turn the key on I get power for a few seconds then it goes off and power while cranking. It will run on carb cleaner while I am spraying it in the throttle body. I also checked the ground wire on top of the frame to make sure I had a good connection. Anything else I could try before pulling the tank for a second time?

    excellent video. This is an example of why youtube is very valuable. I just bought a 98 silverado K 1500. The guy I bought it from replaced the fuel pump and the filter but was unable to install the metal straps because the parts store gave him the wrong ones and then he just lost interest in completing the project and now the tank is held in place with tie down straps. Im not sure why he didnt just use the original straps that he took off. Anyway, this video was very informative and made me less afraid of completing the project. Liked and subscribed.

      It is worth noting that the video you see here is for the longbed model. I have the shortbed (6' 6") model and the straps/brackets that hold the tank are significantly different from what is seen in the video. I think a bit more challenging to deal with as well. Not just a simple strap with a bolt to loosen......

    Well this video really helped me. I do have a question.. would the fuel pump going out still alow the truck to start and run periodically? I bought a 98 1500 that ran and would run when it wanted to.. it wouldn't stay running in park for very long it would idle low and die. But when it was running I drove 30 miles without a stall a spit or sputter then as I pulled up to a stop sign it died and hasn't started since.. I did a full tune up on it

I've been DREADING having to change the pump because I don't want to pull the bed. I bought a filter to try first, but if that doesnt fix it, I'm no longer afraid to change the pump now that I see how easy it is to drop the tank instead. hey great vid man. im about to do this. i had an issue with engine stalling and surging under load (in drive) in park she idles ok not perfect but ok.
    i had to install an inline adapter and it showed 2 psi which confused me cos it will still crank just not run good.
    the inline adapter doesnt seal perfect tho. it lets a little gas drip but i figured that wasnt enough to justify a loss in 10-12 psi. so i shot a little carb cleaner in the intake hose and she smooths out.
    u ever used one of those inline adapters? is not sealing perfect common? i went as tight as i could without stripping the lines out.
    anyways. unless u say oh no hold up before i go out ill be dropping this thing this afternoon. thanks for any replys and any advice given.

      So I been counting miles for a couple years in my 98 z71 k1500 cause my gauge always reads full or more, sometimes it'll bounce a little then back to full, when all it probably is is a damn ground wire!!!! Lmfao...wtf I been avoiding dropping it cause I thought it was hard as hell and thought I'd have to buy a whole new unit first lol I feel pretty dumb about now....so where exactly should I look? I have a short bed so I know it's a tad different then this long bed but can't be much different on wring right? So what happens with the ground and how do I fix it? I'd greatly appreciate the help! Having a gas gauge in my truck would be like I got a new truck after a few years of always guessing milage lol

    Hi Thomas, I pulled my 89 36 gal tank plus minus 20 years ago, this just reminded me of things I forgot. I am 82 and not eager but if I don’t do it it won’t get done. My problem is the fuel indicator is variable, it used to read about a quarter and after a few minutes read relatively accurate, now it reads about a quarter regardless of the amount of fuel, I have been guilty of throwing money down a rathole because of my limited knowledge. Any suggestions, thank Kelsey S

    i just picked up the same kind of truck and it wont start and i ordered a fuel pump because on my island they cost over 300 but i heard there is a lart called a security module that also might be the problem but it doesnt seem to have one does your truck have such a unit?

    This is great but I have a question... I had my fuel pump replaced from a mobile mechanic, an when I fill my tank up it overflows when it is full . Now that I work on my 98 Tahoe myself , what should I look for when I drop my tank to cause this issue?

    Awesome video Thomas!Very detailed and well explained.im thinking I'm gonna have to change out my fuel pump also.i had a question.i know how the fuel pump sounds when you turn the key.its not that loud but you can hear it.like normally.but,on my truck it's loud and sounds like it's trynna pump fuel thru but it won't start.ive tried spraying starting fluid and it starts but only for a second or two then shuts off.maybe I should try the fuel filter first before I drop the tank.but,how loud the fuel pump is a huge concern to me?

    • @thomasbriansavingmoney
      @thomasbriansavingmoney  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      a loud pump is normally a bad pump, you should hear it, but not real loud. however you may have a bad hose. open the fuel cap have someone cycle the key while you listen. i think you will hear the pump kick on and fuel dripping back into the tank. listen closely , it will sound like water dripping in water . at the top of your pump there is a rubber hose about two inches long. it prob came loose or has a crack in it. but either way the pump will need pulled. you can do a fuel pressure test to see. if you disconnect the fuel filter from the line and cycle the key, a lot of fuel should come out. ( if its a bad filter ) but if it only drips, then its a bad pump. thanks for watching. please keep us posted.

    How do people feel about cutting a hatch over the tank in the truck bed?
    I have heard about people doing this, and I have been seriously considering doing this as I need to change out my fuel pump. If you drop and dry out your tank, can you not also vacuum out debris, if you see debris inside?

    • @thomasbriansavingmoney
      @thomasbriansavingmoney  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      no, it was fine. i like to use a piece of metal or wood, but its all about the placement. a tranny jack works great. thanks for watching.

    My fuel gauge reads over full or under empty. It will randomly switch to one or the other. Do you think the ground wire could be the problem? Gotta replace my fuel pump soon so good time to take a look at it.

  • @superior3384

    Also my 2003 chevy avalanche 1500. With the 5.3 runs good. But every so often it sputters and if I give it gas it sputters more and it also turns off. It started when I would be at a light while driving. Then it started to sputter and turn off while driving. I'm suspecting it's the fuel pump. But I'm not sure. Any ideas?

    This video is really helpful. I just got a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 it had old gas in it. So Before I start this project I was wondering how can I dissolve/remove the sticky,Carmel residue that the old gas has left behind?

    • @thomasbriansavingmoney
      @thomasbriansavingmoney  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      if the gas is more than a year, i would pull the line from the rail, pull the filter and blow air through, then blow air from filter outlet toward tank. if the pump is working in the tank then leave it alone, siphon the old fuel from tank and fill the tank back up. do not add a additive. the additive will break up the old stuff and send it back through the injectors. the pump does not reach the bottom of the tank, just leave that in there. over time it will clear through. its best to let that stuff burn through small amounts at a time. if its been under a year siphon the old fuel from the tank, replace your fuel filter. and your good. thanks for watching.

    Hey Thomas I've actually did all of what your video has shown..... I'm having the fuel cluster showing full all the time so I've cleaned the earth on the frame, New wire connection and so forth but the fuel cluster still registers full... Will the cluster register full also if faulty. Just trying to narrow it down....
    Thanks Thomas

      This is a very late reply and I’m sure you’ve assessed the issue, but most likely your problem is the motor that drives the fuel gauge needle. They contain oil that dampens the function of the needle and after time that oil dissipates. If you go on eBay you can find them fairly cheap.

    I have a 1996 Chevy Express 1500, and the fuel pump is not running. It draws excessive current when the FP relay is jumpered. I presume that's locked rotor current. Your video is a huge help; nothing like knowing what you are getting into before you start a job. I can't believe some people cut a hole in the floor of their van to do this. Thanks for just the right amount of detail. If I may contribute one hint, if you want to take the filler hose off, the old stiff rubber hose can get really stuck to the metal filler pipe. Prying the rubber away from the pipe with a screwdriver just enough to get a shot of WD-40 in there will loosen it right up. Thanks!
