    It still gets to 60mph in 10 seconds. If you want something that's going to start every time and not break down on you every 3 months then this is what you want.

    Just picked up my first Toyota, a 2014 CPO Corolla S, black on black with 32,000 miles. So far I like the styling, the backup camera is great, cabin layout is cool, top stitching on the seats, awesome mpg, very comfortable. The hp is kind of a joke but once I'm up to speed on the freeway she'll keep up with traffic no problem. Paddle shifters seem gimicky to me, havn't really used them much. Overall it's a solid, quality car for not that much cost.

    Honestly is not bad for the price. This car is aimed for teenagers that just need to go to school and work and go out with friends so it doesn't need all the powerful performance parts that other cars have.

    I have driven the 2013 RAV4 and Avensis, with 2.0 and 1.8 gas engines. Both with the CVT, an awful gearbox. A regular six or seven speed automatic is much more predictable. When driving a car with CVT you can not control it in the same way, like if you lift ur foot of the pedal and it upshifts, and when you floor it, it down shifts. As for design the Corolla in the US looks a bit dull. Here in Europe the exterior is more "cutting edge", sharper lines. Anyways, nice to see an indie review again :)

    Thanks! Around 3:15 you mention firm and dart-y steering and then talk about how the "direct" steering makes it fun. I love the way this car handles. We have a lot of hilly winding roads where I live, and the 2014 S+ is soooooooo fun to drive on these types of curves. Maybe it's because I bought a used one that was broken in by 19k miles. I can also say, despite the annoying CVT, this one had more punch than the Elantra (sport), Civic and Impreza that I test drove before deciding to go with the Corolla S+. That Sport mode button helps a lot. Also, if the road noise is an issue for you, turn up the stereo - this one is well above grade for sound quality.

    Nice review Greg :) I got the exact same model and color in your video! I'm liking it. Definitely gets better gas mileage than my last car which was a 2007 Toyota Camry XLE... the interior is very nice looking in my opinion. The rims and overall design looks great too. At first I thought it was going to be uncomfortable for me driving this car since a Camry is more spacious than Corollas but I thought that there was plenty of room.

    the Toyota Corolla is not a sports car by any means it is a point a to point b car the shift paddles on the car are mainly made for more mountain driving when your car is having a hard time getting up a hill and you need to shift up without having to floor the car and waste gas to get it to switch into that gear a lot of automatic transmission cars have that option but they put the manual shift paddles on the steering wheel to make it safer to choose that option for when you want to hit that hill in the correct gear. they chose that option to put the paddles on the cars steering wheel also to make it look more sport. it is not a Lamborghini by any means, remember the car has under 200hp which means that vehicle was made for daily driving/a grocery getter basically to save money and gasoline... lol Toyota is one of the best brand named for vehicles for many, many years now they last for a very long time and always will for a reason....

    The Corolla CVT is not as smooth as "a typical 6 or even 8 speed automatic"? (2:03 of video)
    Sure, except Corollas automatic transmission is a 4 speed automatic, so that's not exactly a fair comparison. For this class of car, and for peoples expectations of this class of car, this CVT is likely to be very satisfying. If you are expecting the smoothness of an 8 speed automatic, you can get a 2014 Lexus GS 350 or something similar.

    Not a fan of CVT transmissions, however I did test drive one of these in the same color and trim package and I found it pretty good. I didn't expect mind blowing performance, but it was good for the kind of car it is. Wouldn't mind owning one, however I'd probably end up getting a Scion tC over this. Still get the good interior room, and somewhat more features as standard, in a coupe body

      As you know, a CVT uses gear ratios to distribute engine power instead of actual gears. Automakers have programmed synthetic shift points at which the CVT will be at a particular gear ratio at a specific speed range. It makes it feel like a car is down shifting when accelerating.

    • @NOLAItsNotOva
      @NOLAItsNotOva 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CVT is a continuously variable transmission. It is basically a belt inside a transmission instead of cogs and gears like a normal one. It uses an infinite number of gear ratios to help keep the engine in its powerband, thus helping fuel economy. The gear ratios are constantly changing. They're somewhat good for fuel economy (I dont really agree with that) and cheaper for manufacturers to make, however if not properly maintained will cost you a small fortune to replace, since it is not currently able to be rebuilt, and they make the powertrain feel sluggish and rubberband like. I don't see them as necessary to good fuel economy as my parent's 2013 Camry averaged 41 mpg on the highway on a recent trip.

    • @gcavy1
      @gcavy1  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      NOLAItsNotOva thanks for responding to that, a good explanation.
      I have a CVT in my Ford Freestyle and I'm not really a big fan either. It's not terrible, but it really doesn't seem to have infinite ratios...kinda defeats the point. Should have a wider spread too.

    Going to look at one this weekend! I was lucky enough in my past to have an Acura TL S type S (2002) as my first car. I've been very disappointed in the amount of power in a lot of the test drives I've done so far but hopefully the Toyota doesn't disappoint. It's a great price and great on gas mileage. My poor little Acura is approaching 206,000 and I'm afraid I have to get something new.
