Toyota builds the most reliable vehicles. My dads first car a 99 Corolla is our only car and it can handle Canadian winters ( -30 degrees Celsius, up to 2 feet of snow). The car currently has 297 000 kilometres so about 183 000 miles and the car only needed regular maintenance and new shocks because of the weather here
Agreed. Toyota is simple, reliable and easy to fix.. and now they even have better looks too. I had a Turbo WRX and downgraded to Corolla.. you'd think that's crazy, but I'm saving a bunch of on gas and I can fix anything on this car myself, I can even remove the engine, but the Subaru would've been insane.
The 4 speed auto is all about having a low base price. The auto is expected to be less than 9% of total Corolla volume but it allows them to cut the L model's price. 130 HP doesn't make the Corolla speedy but it is on par with the competition and the Corolla, despite growing significantly for 2014, only gained about 30 lbs.
Hands down you have the best car reviews on the internet. This is a great review of the Corolla; everything you discuss relates to what a buyer is looking for in a new car purchase.
Thanks for that. All the cars we had access to were pre-production models that all lacked power seats. It's good that Toyota addressed this and I'll try to add a note in the video to correct this.
I sat in the 2014 Corolla at the Autoshow and I'm very impressed with the interior. Toyota has come a long way on the interiors, but with the price for a fully loaded model topping $24K, economy cars are getting expensive! My $24K would be on a used Lexus.
Visibility is comparable. Both have medium height greenhouses and moderately thick C pillars. The Mazda3 can be had with blind spot monitoring to help.
I recently bought a 2015 Corolla LE (base trim) with some pretty good discounts and 0% APR. Traded in a 2008 RAV4 V6 (whose additional capabilities I really didn't need) for it and am very happy for the short time I've had it so far. It's nicely equipped, reasonably peppy, reasonably agile, efficient, and has usable, straightforward instrumentation. It has a similar footprint to the RAV I traded, and even more rear passenger room. The interior panels are a little chintzier, but otherwise I don't miss my old ride. I agree with this review pretty much full-stop, and it was very helpful during my shopping decision. Thanks for posting it!
100% with you on the Mazda3. Like I always say, the date recorded is key. I literally flew from an event where I drove the Corolla to an event where I drove the Mazda3 and I felt like I needed to rewind time and re-record the Corolla review with that in mind. Sadly time travel is not possible. Still, the Corolla isn't bad, it's just far from exciting.
Rented a 2014 Toyota Corolla for my roadtrip where I covered 1700 miles, with one 840 mile stretch from Dallas to Denver. I think the tire noise was what bugged me most, there's this higher pitched whine that comes into the cab at around 60mph. Good thing that the sound system sounds pretty impressive and is able to take attention away from road noise. Definitely a fan.
I enjoyed this very detailed review by Alex Dykes. I recently began listening to his auto reviews and love the simplicity and comprehensive information on the cars he covers.
I am getting a certified pre-owned S or LE upgrade package for christmas. I have looked at a loooooot of other vehicles, but i decided that I need just a simple car, proven reliability, and efficient. It's Canadian-made which makes me like it even more.
The Verano and Cruz are very quiet. The Golf is among the louder because it is a hatchback. In general hatchbacks are not as quiet as their sedan counterpart.
Alex, you are one of the best reviewers, but there is one question that bothers me a lot. Every day, I listen to, or read more than 10 car reviews. Almost all reviewers, including you, keep talking about soft plastic and hard plastic and everything else. They talk about the audio control, how to change the valium, but nobody talk about the quality of sound! Numbers are easy to find in web sides, but I really need to know about the sound. At least in a 22 minutes review, give 2 seconds to tell your opinion about the sound quality. Thank you
I have found that sound quality is so subjective. I wish there was an easier way of passing that along but I found when I did comment on it everyone had their own opinion.
Also, I would like to see all your car reviews to have all the lights on display in a dark environment. Thank you for all the detailed reviews! Keep'em coming~ ^^
So have test driven both the 2014 Mazda 3s 5 door Grand Touring with the 2.5 engine and the 2014 Corolla in LE Premium trim. Clearly the Corolla is not as engaging as the Mazda 3. Having said this, I was definitely impressed with just how much they have improved the car over the prior model. It's actually a car you have to see in person to appreciate the styling. The interior is much nicer than the prior gen and the ride is so well tuned you really cannot tell it has a solid rear axle.
Nice review Alex. I like the changes you made with the focal length setting on your camera. The vehicles look much more realistic and better proportioned. Keep up the great work!
bought le eco a month ago. got a 1,500 kms on it now. been averaging 39pmg on a 30/70 city/hiway. can't complain on a very comfortable ride on a 50km daily commute to work.
I split my day and drove the Corolla S and Corolla LE half the day. I can tell you the S is not that much more exciting to drive. I do find the S front end to be a hair more attractive and the gauge cluster is better looking as well but there is very little daylight between the two on the road.
Awesome review Alex, as always!!! This 2014 Toyota Corolla have really improved both inside and outside. I would still pick the 2014 Mazda 3 as my #1 because it looks and drives better than the Corolla. The materials found in the Mazda3 also looks more premium compared to Corolla. That being said, this is an improvement from the outgoing model. I wish Honda would bring the EarthDreams technology along with the CVT Transmission found in Accord to the 2014 Honda Civic.
Just a correction on your review. When I saw this review I was disappointed to hear Corolla offered no Power Drivers seat option. However, I still wanted to experience the Corolla in person so I went to my local dealer, requested an LE Premium and much to my surprise discovered it had an 8 Way Power Drivers seat. Not only that, EVERY Premium model (ECO, LE and S) all get 8 Way Power Drivers seats. w00t! Also I was impressed with how smooth the handling was given the Torsion Beam rear end. ;-)
I kinda wanna know why everyone gives Toyota such a hard time. Their cars are reliable, affordable, and I think they look great, especially the new models like the corolla. The car looks nice and performs well in its category, so why so much hate?
Because they are threatened and jealous of the success of Toyota. No one wants to be 2nd tier to someone else. Domestic fans are especially envious, as Toyota dethroned their now irrelevant Taurus, back in 1997.
There's some truth in both the replies from +Khemistry and +Patriot Fieri Back in the 70's and 80's Toyota, along with some other Japanese brands, stood well above other car brands when it came to reliability and bang for the buck. Don't worry about it and buy what you like the most.

The Corolla is Australia's Best Selling car from 2013-16. Also it is the Best Selling car of ALL TIME. No car has come close how many Corolla have sold.
I hate touch screens in cars! It usually takes you 3 to 4 touches to get it to work. Also they put the "virtual" buttons on the edge of the screen so you have to fight with the plastic borders.
Another great review Alex! How does the '14 Mazda 3 and '14 Toyota Corolla compare when it comes to around the vehicle visibility? It would be great if you could mention it in your reviews. Visibility is a huge pet peeve with the new car designs - I miss the low cowls and belt lines.
Victor bozzo you are exactly right!! I guess some of the reviews I saw stated that it didn't have power seats like some competitors! I just purchased my s premium with convenience package yesterday. I can confirm that only the driver seat has the power seats :) awesome ride compared to my previous 2010 Elantra! Got my new car for 21,518! Great price for the features!!
There are multiple threads on Toyota Nation about the hard, noisy ride and short, thinly paddded seat bottom of the 2013 Avalon as compared to the previous generation 2012 Avalon. Edmunds just reviewed the 2014 Corolla and found the ride harder and noisier than the Chevy Cruze.
Indeed, of course my comments are also relative to me. For me personally 130 HP is lower than I want. I also personally think there are better options out there, ala the Mazda 3. The added price, again for me, is worth what you get.
Not sure why your Corolla would not have a 8 way power drivers seat. Passenger is manual pretty much across the board in the compact segment. The Power Drivers Seat is not bundled with the Convenience Package. Your car should have an 8 way power drivers seat unless that option was dependent on region. I just downloaded their E-Brochure which is not region dependent and it clearly states that S Premium adds Softex Leather and 8 Way heated Power Drivers seat along with 4 way adjustable pass seat.
They may be the same size, but I would not consider those two cars to be in the same class. Verano is more expensive, so I would expect it to be quieter.
Excellent review! Good job! I would love to see you review the Subaru Impreza. Consumer Report rated it best in class. I would love to hear what you think.
Drove a 2014 Corolla S Plus. Nice car, but felt a bit underpowered. Then drove a 2014Camry SE (bigger car, I know); big difference in power, especially low-end torque.
Is there a way for you guys to do decibel testing on the cars you reviewed in the past? I realize it would probably not be feasible but it was a big factor missing from the reviews.
I enjoy your reviews Alex, however some of your videos are too long. I really like this years Corolla, however it's up to the Civic's standards. Toyota needs to increase power to the S model to compete against the Civic Si.
Alex, could you please provide an opinion as to why the '14 Corolla is loud as compared to the competition; is it the lack of cabin insulating material, or the tires, or a combination of the two? I had a 2006 IS250 and then purchased a 2009 Corolla. That year was amazing for the Corolla, as it was quiet and comfortable. Has Toyota gone backwards?
You said you got the High 30's mpg on the Highway. So would you bother buying the LE eco for only a few more Mpg and added cost? I own a '05 Toyota Corolla LE and I average in 33 mpg per tank I looking to buy a new corolla but i may wait a few years and pick up one used since my car still runs like new.
"The door panels are hard plastic" Not true. There is a padded arm rests on both front and back doors and cloth on them as well. Which is a helluva lot more than what some cars in this class have and when they do, they only do it for the front doors and then get cheap in the back.
Toyota makes the most reliable vehicles. Were they to make a sporty version of the Corolla with 200+ hp like the Civic or 250+ hp like Mazda 3, Focus then they would utterly dominate the compact category. 4 speed auto with its anemic horsepower won't excite the young crowd.
that is why scion is here. toyota's became like buicks to kids. true. they are very reliable. so is my focus - 09 , 2 dr coupe. which is a mazda 3 underneath. the made until 09 mazda 3
emil sponga I would agree only on the FR-S. the other scions are as boring as mainline Toyotas but in more flashy clothing. Kids aren't dumb, they'll see through that. Toyota does make exciting cars but they all wear the Lexus F sport badge.
mahballzrhari oh , i totally agree. but - that is why we have scion , here. toyota was getting "old peron-ish" . and toyota's idea was to do a scion line in the usa, at least. even if many were already toyota cars.
Alex on Autos Alex, accordiing to Toyota's website, the only version of the Corolla with the manual climate control is the base L model. Being that you have the touchscreen and the CVT transmission, you clearly have an LE model. So how is it possible that you don't have the automatic climate control when it's supposed to be standard on all Corollas except the base L trim?
+thecarelectronicguy Actually, the manual air conditioning comes base on the L, LE and S trim. The only trim that comes with automatic air conditioning standard is the LE Eco trim. Clearly Alex has the LE base trim, and not the LE premium or LE plus package.
1:07 I think you overestimated i a little here, it will be highest volume LED headlamp in the US, because outside US Corolla has different front end and regular halogen reflectors.
That wouldn't matter as there is no other compact sedan that offers standard LED lights. Can you name another car model that will outsell the Corolla and have LED's on all models?
Toyota builds the most reliable vehicles. My dads first car a 99 Corolla is our only car and it can handle Canadian winters ( -30 degrees Celsius, up to 2 feet of snow). JDM Toyota Two feet of snow is nothing compared to where I'm from in canada.

100% with you on the Mazda3. Like I always say, the date recorded is key. Yes, the sedan is slightly quieter than the hatch. We had a limited amount of time in a Mazda3 sedan that day.
I have a huge soft spot for the XJ. It's not as unique as the Quattroporte, but it is much better integrated in terms of electronics.
Rented a 2014 Toyota Corolla for my roadtrip where I covered 1700 miles, with one 840 mile stretch from Dallas to Denver.

Standard LED low beams is really a nice touch. I hope Toyota brings them across their line-up.

The Verano and Cruz are very quiet. The Golf is among the louder because it is a hatchback. In general hatchbacks are not as quiet as their sedan counterpart.
That would be a bit tricky, but I promise we will do our best to include them in the future with as much of a comparison as possible.

another very comprehensive review. Great work.
The bit at the end is a nice departure from the usual credits music.

Nice review Alex. I like the changes you made with the focal length setting on your camera. The vehicles look much more realistic and better proportioned. Keep up the great work!
They are all LED not HID. HID headlamps are a Xenon arc system, LEDs are light-emitting diodes.
I'm thinking this is gonna be my first car!
may flower: Did you end up getting one?
You cannot go wrong with a Toyota Corolla !
Did you buy it?
bought le eco a month ago. got a 1,500 kms on it now. been averaging 39pmg on a 30/70 city/hiway. can't complain on a very comfortable ride on a 50km daily commute to work.
I can not wait to get this car next weekend!!!
It is high on the list but hard to get our hands on.
I split my day and drove the Corolla S and Corolla LE half the day. I can tell you the S is not that much more exciting to drive. I do find the S front end to be a hair more attractive and the gauge cluster is better looking as well but there is very little daylight between the two on the road.

BOUGHT 2014 COROLLA S TODAY...REALLY NICE.

There's some truth in both the replies from +Khemistry and +Patriot Fieri
Back in the 70's and 80's Toyota, along with some other Japanese brands, stood well above other car brands when it came to reliability and bang for the buck.

The cars are almost the same across the borders, so it's like splitting hairs on which is better, so it's all down to personal preference.
In other words, haters gonna hate, patriots doubly so.
Don't worry about it and buy what you like the most.
Grumpy ol' Boot they were also quieter. smoother etc. thats not always true anymore.
there was a huge gap between american compcts and asian ones until , say late nineties.

Beautiful looks! Cleaner and better design than the Civic. Amazing Nav/infotainment system.
Do yourselves a favor, take the 6speed out first, then try the CVT slush box. In my long test drives, I'm getting much better fuel economy around town than the CVT (well, when i say much, i dont mean that much 1-1.5L/100). 6 Speed works much better. Thats what i bought.

Corolla S Premium comes with an 8-way power adjustable seat with lumbar support.
Surprised there was no infotainment comparison with the '14 Mazda3, especially given how much you liked it.
The Corolla is Australia's Best Selling car from 2013-16. Also it is the Best Selling car of ALL TIME. No car has come close how many Corolla have sold.
Love S model ...heated seats 💺 ...very significant option

I think if you maintain any car, it will last you a long long time...
my 2002 corolla still runs great...
I agree. The Verano is considered a compact near-luxury sedan which is a different class.
Indeed, of course my comments are also relative to me. For me personally 130 HP is lower than I want. I also personally think there are better options out there, ala the Mazda 3. The added price, again for me, is worth what you get.
You set fire to that Corolla. Great review.

Sadly in Brazil this is one of the top cars we have here, and it coust so much.
btw, nice car.
I've heard past civics have transmission problems but not sure about the newer civics. I like the Corolla though so it's a tough call.
the ending made me like and turn on the bell. love the vids! I'm thinking about buying a corolla.
budfiend4627 Adele set fire to the rain
They may be the same size, but I would not consider those two cars to be in the same class. Verano is more expensive, so I would expect it to be quieter.
Excellent review! Good job! I would love to see you review the Subaru Impreza. Consumer Report rated it best in class. I would love to hear what you think.
Another awesome review Alex!
Great review. Soo detailed. Keep up the good work.
Rauf Gonza I know this a dumb question but is this car grey or gold? I’m having a hard time
I have and I really like the wagon, but then again I have a thing for wagons.
As I recall you have to have the dealer update the software.
Nice voice, Alex;) This was another great review. I would take the Mazda 3, though.
Love the blooper at the end!
Drove a 2014 Corolla S Plus. Nice car, but felt a bit underpowered. Then drove a 2014Camry SE (bigger car, I know); big difference in power, especially low-end torque.
The Corolla isn't particularly known for being sporty.
Is there a way for you guys to do decibel testing on the cars you reviewed in the past? I realize it would probably not be feasible but it was a big factor missing from the reviews.
You guys should do a video on the Dodge Dart, I think it's a very decent option in the compact sedan segment.
Quietest ride is not the Ford Focus in the small/compact car class. That would be the Buick Verano.
awesome review thank you so much / i was so waiting for this
The Eco Premium doesn't have a garage door opener. While being "fully loaded" / "premium".
I enjoy your reviews Alex, however some of your videos are too long. I really like this years Corolla, however it's up to the Civic's standards. Toyota needs to increase power to the S model to compete against the Civic Si.
It doesn't have an "infinite number of gears." It has a continuous gear ratio.
I think it is a bit of both. Toyota has not gone backwards per se, but the others have really improved their compact sedans.
Alex - love your reviews.I wanted to ask if the transmission mimics gears on the S model only, or also does that on the LE model? Thanks a lot,Moses
Hi Alex, love the review. Are the speakers better than the 2013 model? Thanks
The speakers are great
The Jetta and Passat got less refined in this last generation in search of higher volume in America.
Alex, you are great at this. Do you work as a Salesperson on a lot?
+Paul Bunch Thanks! No, I have never worked for a car company or a dealer.
Amazing amount of rear legroom.
Which compact car has the lowest noise levels (wind/road noise)? Golf maybe?
If that's the case, do you think the new mazda3 sedan will be quieter than the hatchback?
Reminds me of the ford focus redesign for their 2008 MY.
great review but I just have to laugh hard when you crawl into the trunk LOL
"The door panels are hard plastic"
Not true. There is a padded arm rests on both front and back doors and cloth on them as well. Which is a helluva lot more than what some cars in this class have and when they do, they only do it for the front doors and then get cheap in the back.
I'm thinking of buy a used 14' Toyota Corolla.
one thing is pretty bad in corolla is outside noise , specially u get so much noise when u cross bridges ...noise is the big issue ...
Is there a noticeable difference in performance between the eco trim and the other trims?
Wonderful voice!
Love my 2014 Toyota Corolla LE
Nice review
And can also review the S model? I heard it's much more exciting to drive.
Awesome review. Thanks
I believe this would be the Ford Fusion.
You and me both.
I like the color and rims on the car...
Wu Wei Xu It doesn't matter. Alex said "highes volume LED headlamp in the world". That's not true.
sic22l Highest LED lights for low beams...
Wu Wei Xu The only one with just LED low beams. Not a huge achievement...
sic22l Civic, Focus, Mazda etc. don't even offer LED's. It's not meant to be an achievement, it's a revolution in compact cars.
hot as Fck, good outside good inside look upscale and affordable.
After that we got into a accident and our car was totaled. Should I get a jag XJ or a Maserati quatrroporte?
Excuse me, did you mean all the 14' Corollas' LED headlights have HID?
thx! and have you driven Jetta Sportwagen?
