John Travolta worked on that dance for 10 months. It was cut from the movie originally but when he saw the pre-screen and saw it wasn't in there, he was pissed. He insisted it be put back in. Smart move. It's one of the most iconic dance scenes ever.

I agree. I saw it as a teen in Brooklyn when it came out at the Loews Albemarle on Flatbush Ave. The theatre was certainly alive during this scene! For me, however, the "More Than A Woman" dance scene still does it for me. I guess you had to be there.

  • @colibri1
    @colibri1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +336

Yeah, those disco dance floors where you're dancing on different colored flashing lights under foot were a real thing, along with sudden releases of dry-ice smoke filling the dance floor. I was too young to go to adult discos at this time, but there were "teen nights" at local amusement parks that would feature disco setups for us and yeah, there were lit-up dance floors, dry-ice smoke, mirrored "disco balls" (which had been revived from the 1930s-40s Big Band era), etc. It was fun, but no, we didn't all dance like that. Some did, but not many. Most of us did disco line dances like versions of the Hustle and the Bus Stop. As others here are saying, that dancer is John Travolta in the 1977 movie "Saturday Night Fever."

Quick fact: They originally wanted to use a dance double for Travolta's character in SNF, but he went off and trained like mad when he got the role and was consequently able to do all the dancing himself. And it really added to the movie because they could shoot him Fred-Astaire style in full figure.

Danny Terio worked with Travolta to get the dancing down. He watched Travolta's natural movement and built the dances around those abilities. Danny was the dancing king back then. Not sure I spelled his name correctly. And, this is not technically disco.
But, you sure can dance to it..to steal a line from American Bandstand.
And.. yes...the floors were like that and we wore dresses that twirled for dancing.

My absolute favorite BeeGees song! My friends daughter got married a few years ago ( she's in her 20's) and this song came on for everyone to dance to, and all of us old schoolers (40' and 50's) got up immediately and started dancing like there was no tomorrow! The 20 somethings just sat there and thought we were all crazy!

Not everyone danced (or could dance) like John Travolta, but many tried! Lighted dance floors were out there in some places, and many more showed up after the movie "Saturday Night Fever" became a hit! John Travolta (or his choreographer) came up with the iconic "Disco Point" that everyone does when they hear a disco song. It was the album cover on the soundtrack of the movie, which y'all need to check out!

One more you might get a kick out of (as you reacted to them recently) is the Foo Fighters version of this where they brand themselves as the "Dee Gees" (David Grohl) featuring the Foo Fighters as you've never heard them (David singing the falsetto parts and of course Taylor Hawkins on the drums).

To answer Amber's question, yes, there were clubs just like that. I was a semi-hippy nerdy engineering student from the Midwest whose musical taste ran to Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, but in the early summer of 1974 - before I knew what disco was - I took a trip out east to look at Grad Schools, and I stopped to visit my college roomie at his hometown in Fishkill New York in the Hudson Valley. All the time I was driving I remember my am radio playing the Hues Corporation song "Rock the Boat" - which was early disco.. I found it slightly annoying, but it got in my head nonetheless --- One night, my roomie took me on a drive toward the Big Apple - not in to the city, but fairly close to it, and we went in a dance club. I'd never seen anything like it - guys in colorful silk-print shirts, girls all in shimmering dresses and high heels - a disco ball spinning, scattering light all around, and yes - an elevated dance floor with colored lights flashing underneath in a square grid. Pounding dance beats with strings and horns. Lots of dancing. This was about 3 years before the Saturday Night Fever movie & soundtrack came out, but the New York area was leading the trend. I wasn't hip enough to be part of it, but I can testify - it was real... all that was really going on.

Just last year, my wife, I, and a couple of friends were riding in the car listening to this song, and we all wondered what the Bee Gees were saying during that part of the song. We're all over 50 and have been listening to this song since we were children. We looked up the lyrics and we all just howled with laughter. We had no idea that's what they were saying. The lyrics are really hard to understand. Given what they actually are, and that it was mid- 1970s, that's probably not an accident. Here they are:
    My baby moves at midnight
Goes right on 'til the dawn
    My woman takes me higher
    My woman keeps me warm
What you doin' on your bed on your back? Ah
What you doin' on your bed on your back? Ah

    My woman gives me power
Goes right down to my blood
What you doin' on your bed on your back? Ah
What you doin' on your bed on your back? Ah
    You should be dancing, yeah
    Dancing, yeah
What you doin' on your bed on your back? Ah
What you doin' on your bed on your back? Ah
    You should be dancing, yeah
    Dancing, yeah
    My baby moves at midnight
Goes right on 'til the dawn, yeah
    My woman takes me higher
    My woman keeps me warm
What you doin' on your bed on your back? Ah
What you doin' on your bed on your back? Ah
