The school year is winding down in a small Montreal suburb. I file into the old gym with dozens of my 6th grade friends for whatever this sock-hop thing is. True to the name, shoes come off and the boys and girls line up on opposite sides of the gym chatting and giggling with excitement and nerves. Any uncertainy of what to do next evaoporates as "You should be dancing" pounds out of the decades old speakers. We all surge to the middle of the floor with glee, limbs flailing in our best disco flair. Worried thoughts of a slow dance and it's requisite awkward crossing the floor and extending my hand to my crush are long gone. We meet in the middle, smiling and snapping our arms into the air. Best of 1977 memories. Thanks Bee Gees!

Bee Gees had more than just a few Pop hits, with Robin being the lead vocal on a lot of them. They basically had TWO careers. After a few years of not recording and going through tribulations in the early Seventies, they came back better than ever. Barry changed his voice, taking lead on most of the Disco songs, Saturday Night Fever came out, and the rest is history.

Like that "Bee Gees sound " is prevalent in Andy's songs too. His voice was similar and at least Barry contributed to background vocals so that falsetto was there.

The disco era gets trashed a lot but it was really a fun groovy time back then I was a young kid back in the late 70s but I even grooved with it myself the first vinyl Lp I bought at the age of 6 was a Casablanca record of Disco mix with people like Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder and Roberta Kelly and I still have that album today ! Disco music was a vibe ! Im a rocker dude a guitarist of metal and grunge but I won’t ever let go of my love for disco either there’s always room for good music !

Apparently the disco sound started, or at least was popularized, by the Beegees and then basterdised by commercialism. I think that's what ruined disco. Not that it was a bad sound but that when you have a person in a duck suite singing like a duck and releasing an album with disco in the name, yeah that's gonna have a lot of people questioning the legitimacy of the sound.

I don't care what anyone says, but to me Disco was great music! I remember as a kid that the Rock purists would trash Disco, and their motto was "Disco sucks", you could even see it on graffiti everywhere. What closed minded people. I loved both kinds of music and didn't care to admit it!

The fact that baby brother Andy is in it, plays a big part, as well...
We really had such a good time in the clubs, back then... no one got "insulted", stabbed - or shot, "just because"...
Everyone came to dance and relax from a busy school/work week, nicely dressed, and in a good mood.

There was a rumor in the 1970s that part of the vocals on this song were actually mice squealing sped up. Also, Brad sways from side to side and Lex sways from back to front avoiding any collisions between the two. Lex head bobbing on this song would let her fit in perfectly with the head bobbing of the movie A Night At The Roxy. A movie that....... eh hmm. Well, lets say I'm familiar with that movie.

Bellbottoms predate disco by several years... wide lapels, polyester and cocaine are disco's trademarks... this album was absolutely inescapable for about a year when it came out... fun even for those of us who got tired of disco pretty quick...

They were wide bottom pants by the Disco Era. I went roller skating 3 times a week and your pants HAD to fit over the upper part of the skates and only the rugs over the laces showing. I saw some incredible skating to Bee Gee songs.

Yeah, After all these years, I just finally looked up the lyrics for that too fast to understand verse that runs through the whole song. "What you doin' in your bed on your back..what you doin' on your bed on your back..you should be dancing." What?? Lol. I never had a clue....

    EPIC,
And Lex's reaction is so precious.
What I said about Abba also goes for the BeeGees. They had so many hits but as a 15 year old boy you could not admit liking them and remain any kind of "Cool" factor among your circles.
What is epic about this song is that it embodies so many elements of what would become club music (Disco) in the eighties, too many elements to mention here. This song was early on, I believe 1977 and is produced using real instruments. Starting in the 80's more synthesizers would be introduced, but following production principles that we hear in this song. This song also carries a vibe perfectly representing what the movie "Saturday Night" was all about.
Saturday Night did not create the disco vibe, it was organically created from a different direction. What Saturday Night did is make masses of people ready to accept the new disco era and roll into it.
